The things (protein shakes, Protein powders and liquids) taste different to you pre op VS post op- Get small volumes so your not stuck with large amounts of now nasty stuff.

Getting banded on September 27, 2006

Are you nervous? I was. I really expected recovery to be a little easier, but oh well I will grin and bare it (LOL). Each day gets easier. I still have a problem with the gas and BLOATING!!! Good luck to you.

GettingThinMan,Don't think of it as you will not be able to eat the rest of your life. When I thought of it that way, I too wanted to cheat on my 2 week total clear liquid pre-op diet. But I read alot of threads on LapBandTalk, and was straightened out on that way of thinking. OF COURSE you will be able to eat again. You will definitely definitely be able to eat food, real food again, just in normal sized portions! Don't worry about that. Actually, I am still on liquids for 9 more days! Good luck!

I am glad to hear some people didn't have to do the weeks of liquid, i was supposed to do a one week liquid diet but felt like crap so it went one day liquid one day food. Is there anyone else that has had this and is a vegetarian. I am really having problems coming up with as much Protein as needed, esp doing the 2 wk post op liquid diet. (which i have been very good) although i have been experiencing shooting pains from my shoulder into my neck, the doctor said if it gets worse to go to the er. oh and i want one of those cute little count down things!

Are you working with a dietician?

I never really got a chance to tell any of my details from when I was banded on september fifth. I guess I have just been so over welmed.

I was banded by Dr. elliot fegelman in Cincinnati Ohio at Jewish Hospital. I have medical mutual insurance and the process took from april (collecting everything I needed) to get to my band date of september 5th.

I didnt really get to see the doctor often, which wasnt really what I liked -- but the nurses and staff at jewish hospital are amazing. They even sent me a personalized card. I got a private room (after FIVE HOURS in recovery). and I stayed the night.

I have been in chronic pain forever, so I was up at walking right after I got out of surgery. Pain, doesnt get to me, like it may have gotten to me before I had rheumatoid arthritis.

Not eating has been killer for me. My incisions are really high up. Everyone anatomy is different. My highest incision is around my sternum area between my breasts. the port incision was larger than expected. I can see that I will have a permenant scar (but I am african american).. it looks like the stitching of it, and the length of it may be bigger than usual from what I have seen on LBT.

He had no complications with my liver (even though I did a horrible job on the PreOp diet). But I am younger, and my weight gain is fairly recent I suppose. (gained 70 lbs in two years).

I lost a lot of weight pretty quickly. and right now i am REALLY REALLY struggling with my post op diet. I have done tons of research, including recently viewing the LB procedure on video. I am still having a difficult time. around 1 1/2 weeks post op i had a mushie (not much of a mushie. But yet, a mushie). I was getting literally sick off of my Protein shakes.

I posted about this.

the smell of them make me want to vom, so I am just not drinking them. I have had smoothie brand high Protein chai tea's, and mashed up Beans, and yogurts (which are allowed). pudding, lots of my Vitamins. nothing rough. But I have been ice creaming. its been really difficult to stay over 1000 calories.

this is my first few days getting over 1000 calories in. My hunger factor is in full strength now. But I am very careful eating and drinking. I sleep on my port although its painful.

i cant get my ticker to work, but im at 229 now

Like I said. If this helps to clear the air on some topics, it's a good thing. That's why it came up in the first place. Not for making anyone feel threatened or embarrassed, but to fix some stuff.

If you mean by what you said, that I'm the culprit, dude, I don't have a problem with that. Jump in with both feet. I did, and I'm glad I did.

Even though YOU don't name names, I totally understand. I tried my darndest to never name names. If I had wanted to do that, I would have addressed her directly, in private. But alas, like you said those who feel "threatened" jump in first. Interesting reference, by the way.

As for the not-so-sweet "Queen" remark - I'm surprised that you noticed. I am indeed Queen. Not of the LTF, but of my realm. Hope you are of yours too.

Nice chattin' with you, Miss Good Humor.

I, by no means, intend for this to be an ongoing continuance of differing opinions. I felt I needed to stick up for her, make a point, and I think I did. If her feelings were hurt, they were hurt, and somebody needs to validate that. I know I don't get butt hurt for no reason, it's usually provoked, unless I just want to be mad at my husband.

I'm done now. My Queen remark was directed at a wide range of people, not you. And yes, I am queen and master of my domain.

spike I know where you are comming from.. I'm not a vegetarian per say but I am sooooo freaking pickey about what type of meat I will eat it is crazy!! It is not the oh poor animal thing(NOT TO OFFEND ANYONE).. I just dont like the taste.. period.... Dont like fish at all(yes I did try it)... not a crazy fan of red meat either... Pork.. ehhhhh... I love chicken though.. and after reading some posts about ppl not being able to eat chicken has me worried for when I am ready to have a fill.. I too have a hard time finding Protein and can really tell when my body is lacking (my feet get swolen)... I have been trying some of the Protein powders and OMG they are really icky... The injury is really not for me.. I orderd the sample pack 1 van/choc/strawb/unflavor... Scared to try the choc... LOL :faint:

So far I seem to like the EAS Advantage Carb Control Choc Fudge.. Yummm.. about the same price as slimfast 15g prot/ 100 cal/ 0 sug and the main thing already mixed up... yea!!

Let me know if you run across anything please!!! :help:

I, too, have a very small scar right between my breasts, near the sternum. My incisions are all over my stomach, including 1 directly above my belly button, which I wasn't expecting. I haven't seen anyone that had a lap band have an incision there. Also I have one further to the left of my port, which when my arms are down straight, my arms cover it. I was so hoping that incision was my port, but no such luck. My port incision is bigger than I expected as well and, unfortunately, it is the only one that I can fee that is raised somewhat. All the others are flat. I still have my steri strips on, so we will see next week when I go back to the dr. My 5th incision is on the right, almost exactly in the same spot as my port, but on the other side. They pretty much go in a circle, and then there is the one off to the far left side. I thought all of these laparscopic machines were made the same. I wonder why everyone has different incision site. I havent' seen anyone else (looking at the scar thread) that has them in the place I do. I also am short waisted, maybe that has something to do with it. I am 5'1".

MCW prior to this I really enjoyed your posts and identified with your progress and comments.

I will only say one more thing on this tired topic and that is, I never intended to come off as thinking I'm superior here. I honestly don't believe you read completely what all was said prior to my becoming so vocal about it. I was personally misquoted and used in a post, and I didn't like it one bit. I may be short, but I can get rabid when I think someone is doing me or someone else wrong.

I understand that you thought she was the underdog, but to me, she was the aggressor. Then it shockingly turned into me being the aggressor. (At least in your eyes.)

I think my fun here has ended. There is another site with similar information that is more friendly. I cannot even fathom that I have participated in this unbecoming diatribe. Silly me!

I was under the impression that our dispute had come to an end and that everyone could move on. I certainly don't want any part to do with you leaving the boards; I don't think there's any reason for it. I don't agree with ongoing drama, I just wanted to make my point, you wanted to make your point; our points are made, it's done. No need to frolic away.

I apologize for any harsh remarks I may have made. It's out of character for me. I had something to say but could have said it nicer. I am sorry.

MCW I didn't mean to put some guilt trip on you - I was planning to leave because of the interaction I had with Bettina. Your comments just helped to convince me that things had gotten as out of hand as I thought they had.

Life will certainly go on very well without me here! I talk to much - yep, I admit it. I don't know the meaning of the word concise. Oops, here I go again.

Best of everything to you. I understand that you had the best intentions.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
