Attention ! Australian Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Deano, the bubble inevitably bursts lol..I think I went about 8 months without any cravings and then they came back. Definitely not as bad as before and in different way but they are there now.

It is weird tho if I think about having a meal now (ie breakky, lunch, dinner) my body always craves stuff that is good for me, lean Protein, veggies...burgers and fries etc barely come to mind. But Snacks are where my body has lil moments of wanting the junky stuff.

Dammit!!

Actually having cravings won't bother me, if I have a bit more control than I did before.

I don't get cravings so much (yet) and it is funny that my favourite thing pre-sleeve was Pasta and now I don't want it at all. I occassionally will have a little of someone else's Pasta (a spoonful) but then I am done. I am thinking that this is one of the biggest changes for me with the sleeve - no cravings and if I do indulge, it's so small an amount I don't sweat it :)

Seth - there were lots of times after surgery that I wondered why the hell I'd done this to myself. But that feeling does go, well it did for me and I am pretty sure for most people here. There are still times even now though where I think I'd like a massive serve of whatever - you don't get that sense of satisfaction from food that I got (all the time, which was my problem lol). When I eat now, I enjoy what I eat but it's different. Before, I was already thinking about my next meal before I finished the one I was eating - now, I honestly couldn't care less. In fact, I find it easier not to eat than to force myself to eat something at a meal time. If I don't force myself I get really shaky and a nasty headache (like I have now - stupid to miss breakfast), so it can be a bit of a catch 22. But as someone who lived with constant hunger and food obsessions, the pemanency of this was brilliant for me. I can't in good conscience recommend the surgery to anyone, given my own experience however will say that in spite of all that happened, now I am over all of it, I don't regret having the sleeve for a single second!!

Need some advice please. Sorry in advance for the nature of my problem!! I am now 8 days post op and feel great apart from tiredness. liquids are going down fine but each morning I get diarrhea after my first drink and it usually lasts for a few hours then I am fine again. I thought it was my shake or milk and have eliminated different liquids and this morning just had a nutrient Water and the same thing happened. I usually have nutrient water diluted with water in the afternoons and it goes down a treat. Now I am thinking maybe it's just my new tummy getting used to its first 'meal' each day. My surgeon only has clinic on Monday's and because this Monday is a PH I don't have an appointment until the 4th February to ask him about it. It's not serious enough to contact his on call doc but was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and how long it lasted. Would really appreciate some feedback. Thank you.

I didn't get that but other than that session in the mornings do you feel like you're hydrated?

Playing in the 'medical advice' realm doesn't really sit well with me. If it were me, and if it continued, I'd see my GP if I couldn't get in to see the surgeon.

Thanks Deano, I seem to be sipping lots in the arvo so don't feel dehydrated. I only had about 150mls of the nutrient Water this morning and it set everything in motion again so reluctant to drink more at this moment although I feel thirsty. I will see how it goes for the next few days but in the meantime will try and book an appointment with GP now because it's often takes a week or so to get in. Cheers Kate

Hi SwiftKate, I would be concerned about infection. You may need some antibiotics and I agree with Deano, I wouldn't be waiting a week to see my GP, I would be pushing to get seen sooner than this. It may just be 'adjustment' to the sleeve, but at only 8 days post op, I would err on the side of caution, especially since eliminating obvious causes like dairy didn't make any difference to your symptoms.

Best of Luck

Thanks one Elle and Deano. Took both your advice. Tried to get into my GP but she's away until 12 February and didnt want to see a doc who doesn't know my history or may not be familiar with the sleeve. So I bit the bullet and rang my surgeons rooms. One of the other surgeons is doing clinic today so his receptionist will explain my little problem and get back to me today with some advice. Will let you know how I get on.

Just heard back from surgeon's rooms. The receptionist said she spoke to a surgeon there who said that this wasn't uncommon and that it was ok as long as I was getting enough fluids in which I am. Apparently it should rectify itself when I start on purees next week. Joy oh joy, another 5 days of this!! I am concerned because I am going back into work for a couple of hours each morning tomorrow and Friday so will try and go in early and then not drink anything until I get back home because the toilets wot be close enough for my current needs. I can start purees on Monday so hopefully that does the trick. Officially I go back to work next Thursday.

Hi SwiftKate - I struggled with this really badly when I first started fluids etc. In the end, the dietician told me to take some Immodium to stop it and even now, there are times that I have to do this. It's only been like this since the surgery. I agree with the other advice and am glad you've spoken to your surgeon however if you become concerned, don't be worried about contacting your surgeon. That is what they're there for. And if the worst case scenario is that you wasted a little time and money getting it checked out, then that's great. But if it is something else, don't wait until you end up back in OR or ICU :) You know I speak from experience!!

I'd just take more sick leave! That's what it's there for :)

Not drinking isn't the best option. Stay at home with your feet up ;) (but with lots of walks :P )

Hi everyone I am due to be sleeved on Feb 19. Going through some pretty big ups and downs' date=' fors and againsts! Did anyone else struggle with the permanency if this operation? Just wondering how others dealt with the thought. Thanks.[/quote']

Hi Seth, once I made the decision there were no doubts. Knew this was right for me and the fact that it is permanent is a relief and takes the pressure off for hood. Try to stay positive and remember the reasons you needed this surgery in the first place. Everyone on this forum is positive about getting their sleeve and we can't all be wrong!

Hey Sue' date=' looks like we were answering Seths question at the same time

I have the same/similar, pre-surgery I had the sweet tooth, if asked me back then what was my favourite food I would have said chocolate. Post surgery if I have more than one bite (like a bite sized chocolate I am feeling ill), cakes etc I can still eat (rightly or wrongly). But now when I get cravings it is salty stuff I crave life corn chips, pop corn, crackers, chips and cheese. Pre surgery I could take or leave these things as such.[/quote']

How strange - we have both gone to opposite foods! Managed to refrain today so that is my first step to getting back on track with the healthy eating!

I'd be happy with that :)

That would work for me long term. My main downfall was carbs ........ 3 bowls of Cereal for Breakfast, a footlong from Subway for lunch, enough Pasta for 3 men for dinner etc etc.

The other night I picked 3 pieces of penne off my daughters plate and couldn't eat anything else :P That was the first time I'd eaten anything like that, and I have zero interest to have it again.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
