Learning How To Eat Again...

Recommended Posts

Hello. I had surgery on March 27th, 2012. I am just beginning to eat again and am realizing that I can no tolerate anything bread based. I instantly have a slime incident. Anyone else have the same issue with bread or other foods? I'm trying to learn what works and what doesn't and I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Sarah

I had my surgery the same day. I can eat anything except raw veggies. I tend to eat a lot of shrimp, anything cooked in a crock pot works. Chili,

That is awesome! No issues with bread or any sliming incidents?

Did you not get a list of foods from your surgeon for the various post-op stages? My surgeon's guide indicated that things like bread might not be well tolerated for up to a year, but toast might be better than bread. Keeping carbs low has been essential for my weight loss, so I pretty much avoided bread entirely for the first six months. Now I have a half slice of low-carb whole grain bread (25 calories, 2 net carbs for half a slice) for an open-faced sandwich and that's about it. Bread pretty much sits like a rock in my stomach. Same with other white carbs - rice, Pasta, potatoes. They're all on my one-bite-or-avoid-completely list, and I'm 10 months out.

At your stage you're also likely to have trouble with tougher cuts of meat - beef and pork, or anything dry.

I'm with Escape Pod....Bread is a filler and is definately on my one bite list or avaoid....I too eat alot of shrimp and Alaskan Cod...(yes I'm learning to like it, not a big fish eater) but with a little lemon or fresh squeezed lime it is tastey! I'm almost 8 weeks out and have lost 55 lbs, and 4 pant sizes...And I even fit into the shirts my husband bought me last year for my birthday...lol

I tend to avoid dry foods, pastas, but I will still have my baked potato. ;)

bread has always been my downfall. If I can't ever eat bread again, it will be a blessing!

I am with escape pod, I have had nearly nothing as far as carbs go. I dont miss them either. A bite or two of a Pasta salad, a bite of spaghetti, that is it, no bread, rice at all. Maybe try the toasted bread instead. Best of luck to you Sarah, just keep trying different things, you will find one that curbs the carb craving. ^_^

I have to ask, what is a slime incident? I had my surgery on 3/28 am also just trying to eat. I have a few more days until I am allowed to try Wheat Thin crackers. I am really hoping they sit well with me so that I can put cheese or hummus on them for Protein. I am still struggling with the required amount of protein.

I struggle with Protein too. For me, a Protein shake in the morning helps. I stick with the Muscle Milk - although they are beginning to become redundant.

A "slime incident" is when you eat something that your sleeve doesn't like and you vomit a mucus substance that looks like slime. Generally speaking, its clear in color. I haven't ever vomited anything I've eaten but I've learned to avoid all breads and some meats.

I've slimed once at nearly 8 months out. Too much food, then took a drink too quickly afterwards. What a waste of a nice meal!

bread, Pasta, rice, all leave me feeling gross, so I avoid them all.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
