Why Cant They Just Tie The Stomach Instead Of Cutting It Out Permanently?

Recommended Posts

I just thought about this. Why dont they tie it where they cut it instead of cutting it out permanently and then untie after goal is met so we dont become anorexic?

You are basically describing the theory behind the band. We all know how great that worked out! Besides, the second you'd "untie" it (or loosen the band), you'd be packing on like 20 lbs a month.

You will not become anorexic from this surgery. I am sure that this surgery had been done in several ways before the surgical community settling on this type of procedure and what is done. If this was reversible then you would just gain all the weight back. Just like when they take the lapband out or take all of the fill out......people gain the weight back. If you have not had this surgery you might want to consider the band if you want your stomach back and something reversible.

Tieing would cause erosion and would be unsafe. There is the lapband which.is similar to tieing it off. The reason they never undue these surgeries is because they work by restricting your volume of food from several cups down to one.cup or less. If they opened it back up everyone would regain weight as fast as they lost it! It also sections off the part of the stomach that produces ghrelin, the hunger hormone, this helps control hunger in effort to help lose and maintain weightloss.

The procedure doesn't make u anorexic at all, but maybe I misunderstood you, what did u mean by anorexic?

There is a surgery call gastric plication that sort of ties the stomach back to form a sleeve. It does not take the hunger away but does give you the illusion of a sleeve and is reversable. It can cause some issues though with infection and things getting caught and causing serious problems. You can google gastric plication and look at youtube for it.

I always wondered why they didnt just take some of the fat out with the stomach

The sleeve removes a section of the stomach called the fundus which is responsible for the majority of the production of ghrelin in your body, that's your satiety/hunger hormone. The surgery works 2 ways. One is physical restriction since you simply CANNOT eat to much. The second way is that it takes away the physiological response for hunger - you'll still get head hunger but the physical cramping/grumblies etc is gone.

Because tissue needs adequate blood flow, tying off a large portion of the organ, and/or even just suturing and pleating it as in the plication is not giving the results as once promised.

Also, scar tissue forms, adhesions line damaged tissue, you can wrap a rubberband around your finger for a year and then take it off and not have any damage.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
