Hard Time Dealing And Trying To Stay Away From Old Habits...

Recommended Posts

My 3 year old son was attacked by a new dog that we got just over a week ago. The dog is no longer at our house and my son will make a full recovery, but the stress of what "could of" happened is really really hard for me to get past. My 5 year old son was able to come get my husband before too much damage had been done. My 3 year old has a lot of bruising all over his body, mostly to his face, lacerations all over his face, and the worst of it was that his right ear was completely detached from the the back and only connected by the skin on the front. I was not home when this happened, I was at school. I am just having such a hard time dealing with it, and I'm having trouble with staying away from old habits. I'm not overstuffing myself, but I'm leaning more towards unhealthy "comfort" foods, which have just been making me feel so disgusting and worse. I do not want this cycle to happen again! I'm so afraid that I'm going to destroy what I have accomplished.

O my goodness, how awful. Godspeed for a quick recovery. I know what you mean by comfort foods. Just try to remind yourself how truly uncomfortable they make you feel. And also, move, keep busy, don't sit and watch tv. Just tend to your son and focus on him whenever you feel the desire to snack, and remember, he needs you to be strong and healthy too. Best of luck.

OMG i am so sorry for your poor little 3 yr old son. I know it will take time for him to physically & mentally heal. But thank goodness your DH was in the vicinty to help when your wonderful smart little 5 year old ran for help.

now onto you - you have done so amazing 125 lbs. gone... congrats but now returning to some old bad habits? Stop, Stop

Please don't go backward. I know thats so easy to say - you've done so amazingly well the stress your enduring must be so difficult.

Just take a breath, its been so difficult for your family what happened to your little son, but would they want to see you suffer now by going back to bad eating habits. Your 3 yr old wouldn't understand, but trust me the 5 yr would know mommy is doing something different (i have a 5 yr old grandson, he would be smart enough to know something is different)

Please don't make this awful acicident cause you to go back to comfort foods. You've come too far - and i know you want to continue this wonderful journey.

Your little son will be ok and continue to heal

please its your turn to do the same

best

kathy

Sorry to hear about your son and I do hope things get better. At the beginning of my post op surgery I was dealing with head hunger quite often, we all do. It is getting better on how I hold it though. Occasionally I might slip and have a chip or two or eat an extra meal. However, my sleeve does an excellent job in restraining and limiting me. I have been very successful in my weight loss and I enjoy the praise I get. I don't want to go back to the old me. I couldn't walk, breath, etc. You are doing a great job so far. It might helpful to grab a healthy snack with you need to. You can do it, we all have to learn to change our habits.

What a traumatic experience for your family! Of course you're falling back into old habits after that--makes perfect sense to want some semblance of normal or the feeling of familiarity and comfort. But you know that food isn't really going to change anything about what's happened. Sometimes I actually say out loud: Eating this food won't change ______ (fill in the blank). It helps my brain disconnect from my emotions a bit. Eating this food won't change that ugly thing someone said. Eating this won't change that my significant other is seriously ill. Eating this won't change that my son was hurt by our dog. Whatever the situation is, eating food that isn't right for you isn't going to change it.

Bear with me here, because I'm definitely not a psychologist and I don't know you, but I know about feelings of second-hand guilt. Part of what you may be feeling is a sense of guilt and responsibility, even though you weren't there, even though you didn't do it--because you're a mom and this is your precious son, and he was hurt. Making poor food choices now might be a subtle means of self-punishment, a way to say, "I should have ___, and I didn't ____, so I don't deserve ___." Seems like a lot of us set unreasonable expectations of ourselves--somehow we feel we should be "super people" and that we are responsible for all sorts of things that we really aren't responsible for--but boy, do we love to punish ourselves for them! If that might be part of the picture, you may want to see a counselor--this might not be the only thing that you're thinking of in this way.

It's 100% understandable that you would seek comfort and familiarity and the sense of "how things used to be" through food, but the happy news is you don't have to. Maybe check your cabinets and ditch some of the more potent trigger foods--I actually threw out some stuff yesterday that I realized was "calling" me--and substitute with things you really do enjoy that are also healthy.

Hugs to you and prayers for your family!! Hang in there, though--you're going through some big changes! Focus on your goals--for your benefit and for your family's long-term benefit.

What an amazing time to reflect on what your son's life would be like if YOU were the one mauled, (by obesity and related diseases.) You want to be there for him, so stay the course. My 27 year old daughter recently cried and asked me, "Mommy, don't you love us enough to get healthier so that you don't die before you have grandchildren?" OUCH! So, on the 23 of April I am having a revision surgery and changing from my lapband to a sleeve.

Stay the course, stay the course.

Thank you everyone. Things have been better. We normally don't have junk food in the house to begin with, but since we had family come in, there was a lot of stuff left over and was there during this whole ordeal. My son is doing very well though, and I have been being busy to keep my mind off of it all. Too busy I guess because I went from eating "comfort" foods to basically forgetting to eat all together. I've been trying to make sure I have something with my while I'm out, and if I do stop somewhere I grab a side salad from Wendy's and just add some grilled chicken to it. Things have been better :)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
