Long-Term Vsg: When Did You Feel Like Capacity Stabilized/"stopped Growing"?

Recommended Posts

I am 4 months out and doing great, but with recovery I notice my capacity for food seems to "grow and grow". I know that this is reasonably the result of the healing process, and that my stomach isn't simply stretching out.

My question for people who have had VSG a year+: When did you feel like your stomach stopped accommodating more and more food?

I do realize that in reality the volume of my stomach is miniscule compared to what I used to eat, but a month ago I could just get through 2 eggs in the morning...now I find myself having room for a piece of toast as well.

I'd hope there is a point where it seems to just stay the same, and I can reasonably get through say...8 ounces of food give or take. Right now I am getting through an average of 6 ounces per "meal", and I am not losing, but I am stable (which is fine, because I am at a healthy BMI now).

I'd love some feedback, as it's hard not to be at least a little worried!

I have a personal trainer 2x a week and I am fairly responsible with my food choices as well, but if my stomach grows and grows I'm going to have to modify my diet to maintain a healthy weight, which I know is part of being healthy regardless of surgery.

What capacity did your stomach seem to stabilize to? How long did it take to reach that point?

Me personally it seemed to be around the 8th month out. My capacity at this time is around 3 quarter cups of food. However, now as I'm starting to open myself up to more foods that I restricted myself from for a long time during weight loss, I'm starting to figure out that junk food can fit in a whole lot better than Baked chicken and veggies.

I was stable from about 7 months, there are still variances two years out though. Everyone has had that one day (I've had it lots of times) where you say, "Oh no I've ruined it!" I had months where I could only eat part of a Wendy's chili and one day when I finished the whole thing I almost cried. But two days ago I sat down with a bowl of strawberries and was full at 3.

Another thing for me is that eggs are slider foods. bread sometimes can be too, depending on the type. You are doing great!

Sirensiren: How much weight have you lost? Just curious. I like this topic, it is a question I've been having. ;)

MissDiva: do u mean 3/4's of one cup or three 3/4 cups? Just trying to understand.

I am a few days over 5 months out and am worried I can eat more too and want the relaxation / expansion of my intake capacity to stop too. I think about this waaaay too much!

Generally, I can eat about 800 cals a day but the week before my period, I can easily eat 1,000 cals a day. A four oz chicken breast and a broccoli for one goes down easily for dinner. For brekkie, I can consume a 6 oz yogurt and a cheese stick or 2 eggs. That's typical for me size wise at this point.

Thx for this topic. Very interesting.

How much have u lost? I started at 294 and have lost 78 lbs thus far. Paranoid the loss is going to stop. I have also noticed the sliders / junk foods are sooooo easy to consume. I have to keep all nuts outta my house (except for my hubby & son!) because I can't seem to resist.

I am hoping that eventually the stomach stabilizes and stops seemingly allowing more and more room...I hope that is at the 1 year or less mark for me!

I just had 2 eggs and a little wedge of a granola bar. When I read other peoples restriction, it seems like more- but I think a lot of people feel that way.

I started at a BMI of 31 (5'2" 168) and I am now 120 lbs! :o I am quite happy with that, but I work out a lot, I do not eat sugar, I always start with Protein etc. I realize I have nothing to complain about! I am simply curious as to how much "bigger" my stomach will ultimately get and what it will accommodate.

When I'm eating solid lean meats (Protein first) and veggies, and perhaps a bite or two of carbs it comes out to about 3/4 of 1 Cup of food or .75 Cup. When I'm eating junk, I am a bottomless pit! This is also true for soft foods, such as eggs, oatmeal or yogurts - I can certainly fit in more food. I can easily eat the equivalent of 2 eggs and a few pieces of bacon, but not much more than that.

Calories vary for me - so does the amount of food that will fit. It all depends upon what I put in my mouth....just like before surgery. If I sit down to eat one meal and do not graze, I can fit 3/4 cup to 1 cup of food, again, depending upon the density of the food. Grazing or eating junk will up the calories for the same amount of food. Generally, in one sitting, no more than 1 cup will fit, if that.

I don't know what my capacity is for most foods. I stopped eating to "fullness" at about month 3; I set my portion size for dense Protein at 2.5-3.0 ounces and for fish and seafood at 3.5 oz. As others have mentioned, capacity can vary from day to day. Some days I can eat a chicken drumstick, other days one or two bites and I'm done. Of course, I can eat loads of crap like chips and Cookies that chew to nothing and slide right through. I've never eaten enough of them that I was full, thank goodness. It's probably a whole bagful.

Mine too at about 10 months and has taken a few leaps since then too.

Sometimes I really scare myself. For lunch last Saturday we got two of those new Arby's BLT's and I all of mine along with 1/3 of a large curly fry order and a cherry turnover. I was shocked at how much I ate. That morning I didn't have anything more than a Kashi bar for Breakfast and had just ridden my bike 20 miles so I was hungry. I ate a bag of popcorn for dinner too so the whole and was good AND bad

I am at 10 months out and am astonished at how much I can eat now. I'm trying to reel myself back in and eat Proteins and veggies. Last night I ate all the meat out of a taco that was loaded with carne asada and pico de gallo. I didn't eat the tortillas. :) Sometimes I want to eat all day long, especially under stress and am bored. It does scare the hell out of me. :)

Hi Leah, I apologize I just now seen your question. I'm not on often, and the best way to get my attention is to either quote me or write on my profile feed. :)

I did mean only three quarters of one cup. It all depends though, that's if I'm eating properly. Last night I ate maybe 3 Oz of spare ribs and a few bites of broccoli and I was satisfied. I could probably push a little more but I hate how I feel physically if I do, especially with eating dense meat such as pork.

Now popcorn on the other hand... is another story entirely. I am always thankful for my sleeve though, it will always be there for me when I'm willing to use it wisely. Take care!

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
