For Those Who Love Soda...

Recommended Posts

I still drink diet soda. I drink it in moderation, my surgeon told me I was never allowed to have it again. I am not the kind of person who can be told they can NEVER do anything again. I dont hurt when I drink it, it isn't stretching me out, and I am still losing weight very rapidly. I see no problem in having a little diet soda when I feel the urge. I used to drink only diet soda, no Water. Now I get in all my water and if I decide to have a diet soda I make sure to drink that much more extra water to make up for it. No biggie.

I have drank it since beeing sleeved. I sip on one a day. I found that I started this as a cruch when I got super stressed out but I have enjoyed my last one. I am going back to all Water and Powerade zero again starting tomorrow. If I want a sip then I will drink a sip but other than that it is water and powerade zero. When I would drink them, I never had issues with it at all.

I just want a root beer or birch beer or ginger ale. I don't believe it will do anything to you, but I am scared. I had a sip here and there, but that was it. I love a fountain soda!

I haven't had WLS yet but have quit drinking diet pepsi. I slowly weaned myself off it. I used to drink a glass with lunch and a glass with dinner. I do not buy it anymore and when the last of the liter bottles was gone that was it. No more! I didn't drink any Water before either but am now drinking 80 oz a day! I feel lost when I go to the grocery store and don't go down the soda aisle! LOL! I am slowing switching off reg. coffee to Decaf coffee. Right now mixing 1/2 reg coffee and 1/2 decaf and doing good. I was told no soda after surgery and no coffee with lots of caffine in it so I am trying to do these things in advance of when I do get a surgery date!

I crave Coke too, but I haven't had one yet. I did sip some 7-up at a birthday party a couple months ago but it has never been what I crave. I want the real sugar-ful Coca-Cola. I used to drink a 2-liter a day at times. Oh well. The calories aren't worh it. Just something I do without. So far.

Not gonna do it. There IS a chance it CAN stretch the sleeve over a long period of time. Why would I go through all of this just to dabble in things that got me where I am today? New life new habits. Leave the wretched things behind you. Move on to new things that satisfy. My two cents.

I'm not likely to be getting sleeved for another 6 months, but am giving it up now so that it's just one less thing to adjust to post-op. It's been over a week and so far and apart from 1 slip up (I was at a restaurant and just automatically ordered a diet pepsi without thinking) I've been good. Still got cravings though, although not as bad as the first couple of days. There should be a 12-step programme for soda junkies!

Forgot to mention - since quitting diet pepsi I've noticed my sweet tooth has significantly diminished, so maybe there is something in the theory that artificial sweetners cause us to crave sweets. Either way it's a welcome side-effect!

I am almost 10 months out and was previously a diet coke addict. Really, I would drink 5-6 a day. I waited until the end to give it up - aka 3 days before sugery. Right after surgery it was torture because my husband would still be sucking them down.

My surgeon said everything in moderation. I planned on waiting until 6mths out. I had a sip or two before that but when I decided to actually have a diet coke, I decided that I really don't care for it anymore. I have drank a couple but it's has taken several hours to finish it.

On the other hand, my drink of choice is Crystal Light Energy, Wild strawberry. It has much needed caffiene for me and as an added plus B Vitamins and Biotin.

I still drink diet coke. Not everyday, not fast and I don't pretend its good for me. . . . BUT I still have great restriction and am maintaining my (lower than) goal weight very easily.

Sleeve stretching aside-I just came across this article regarding sodas:

Diet-Soda Belly

It's not surprising that drinking all the sugar in sodas would cause weight gain, but what is surprising is that even diet soda will pack on the pounds: Researchers from the University of Texas Health Science Center monitored 475 adults for 10 years, and found that those who drank diet soda had a 70 percent increase in waist circumference over the 10-year study, compared with those who didn't drink any soda. Those who drank more than two diet sodas per day saw a 500 percent waist expansion! A separate study the same researchers conducted on mice suggested that it was the aspartame, which raised blood glucose levels, that caused the weight gain; when your liver encounters too much glucose, the excess is converted to body fat.

Also:

Researchers looked at people’s diet soda consumption between the years 2000 and 2002, and then screened them for type 2 diabetes between 2002 and 2007, People who drank at least one diet soda a day at the beginning of the study had a 67 percent higher relative risk of type 2 diabetes compared with the people who drank none. Zero-calorie soda also increased the risk of metabolic syndrome—a group of risk factors linked to obesity that increase your chances of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke—by 36 percent.

So even diet sodas have their problems

A self proclaimed Cola addict, I gave up Coke on Nov 23 of last year. It has taken me this long to lose the cravings!!! It really does take that long! I'm hoping to get sleeved soon so that's one thing that's already done. :)

Wow - I am so grateful to all of you and this site! I am a month away from surgery and still on the Diet Pepsi. I know I have been told I can't have it after surgery and need and want to give it up, but it actually scares the hell out of me! It was so comforting to hear others were just as hooked as I am and got over it, maybe even won't want it anymore, and there might be a chance to have a little bit once in awhile if I choose to down the road. I feel so much better - I love you people!!

Reading through the posts.... I'm on day 17 of being diet coke free.... I so miss the bubbles. Hoping to have wls in 3 months... Figured the more battles I can fight now before surgery the better.... Don't miss the taste it is those bubbles... That fizz I want ;). But like any addiction no sips... It isn't the first sip that is the problem but all those little sips afterwards.....

I want bubbles!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
