March Roll Call!

I'm 3 weeks post-op (tomorrow), and I'm wondering if anyone else seems to be having the same issue. My taste buds seem to have changed dramatically.Everything I eat tastes different than it did before the surgery. puddings, yogurts, tuna salads, etc., all seem to not taste as good as they used to. Will food ever taste really good again? Everything seems to taste "weird". That's about the best I can do to describe it. Maybe it's just that I really have no interest in eating. I have no appetite, and when I do eat, it's never really satisfying. Anyone seem to have any thoughts or suggestions? I'm still on the soft/mushy phase, and will continue to be so for about another 3 weeks.

I can't say everything tastes different, but I definitely have problems with some things that seemed fine before surgery! I cars it drink plain Water anymore, and I can't stand the thought of taking my chewable vitamins anymore. YUCK! So I am looking for some high quality non- chewables right now. So glad I didn't buy the giant economy size!

I'm two weeks post-op. I'm on the puree stage. I'm having somewhat of the same problem. It just feels like nothing is as enjoyable. Everything I ate pre-op tasted great to me (which is why I ate so much) but now it's as if I'm eating just to get food in me but theres no satisfaction there. Everything seems just.. bland. Fustrates me because I have so much head hunger lately that I would think as soon as I get some food in me I'd feel a lot better. I guess it's just not the foods my body is craving for.

I'm mid week 3 post op and can't drink plain water either anymore. I just make sure to always have drink packets with me...the ocean spray ones are soooo good, especially the blueberry lemonade! And for Vitamins I take the vitafusion gummies...I just chew the heck out of them and have no problems at all...plus they taste like candy.< /p>

I'm two weeks post op and couldn't tolerate the chewable vitamins a 3 days post op. I bought a prenatal Vitamin w Iron. It has 150 iron not quite two 100 plus close. I hope that once I'm on solid foods I can then tolerate the bariatric vitamins

Hang in there, it gets easier :)

I'm on mushies and hate the bland taste too :( except yesterday my mom made meatballs in a Mexican style Tomato sauce...and omg sooo good for the almost tablespoon that I ate lol! So I'm thinking more spices might be what I need. What frustrates me is the Carl's Jr commercial for the jalapeño patty melt...talk about head hunger :( today for lunch I'm gonna try and make some buffalo chicken salad with a bit of blue cheese crumbles and Greek yogurt...fingers crossed it comes out good!

Don't have a recipe...gonna wing it lol! I was planning using the canned chicken I get from costco with a dollop of plain greek yogurt instead of mayo, a few dashes of franks hot sauce and some blue cheese crumbles with a dash of salt and blend it in my bullet style blender. Just gotta get my son to sleep first...it's the first day we are home alone since my surgery :)

So I was out of plain Greek yogurt :( so used nf mayo and reduced fat cream cheese instead and I gotta say it was pretty good...to bad I can't drink a diet root beer with it lol! I was able to eat about 2tbls. How much is everyone else able to take in? Does anyone know when you can eat toast...because I'm craving an egg over medium with a bit of toast to dunk in the yolk.

Very cool, Dr. Salzberg banded me in Norfolk VA in 2008. She was very nice back then, with a different team though. I recall going in for surgery day and expecting my DR Wolgmuth (sp) and she came in and I said hello and she started talking and then said so anything I can do for you and I said.... ummm no but when can I see my Dr? She said you are looking at her! Haha I was suprised bc I had never met her. She did a great job, even though it was removed last week and revision to sleeve with my dr now in Texas

Different Salzberg. This one is a male.

When I eat, it's usually about 1/2 cup at a time, but I sit and eat baby bites slowly over time.

I am right there with you guys on the vitamins. I literally have to force myself to eat them every night because I know I need them, but I hate them.

I am at four weeks tomorrow. I am just now trying to eat solid foods...right now I am sitting here with chicken salad, which is of course chicken meat and the fat free mayo. I haven't been doing that well with milk products but so far so good.

I think I am a little discouraged about food in general. I agree that it's just so much work to try to eat! Plus I get horrible gas...I don't know, I almost think it would be easier to stay on the liquids.< /p>

I understand where you're coming from. My taste buds have completely changed. I asked my NUT about it and she said that it was pretty common and it usually is a phase that passes. Do you have a NUT that you can work with, or contact your Doctor for suggestions - especially with you feeling weak? You are probably dehydrated. You might go to the "recipe" forum here and see if you can find more suggestions.

For me personally, even though most things taste different, and I have no interest in eating, I still MAKE myself eat, focusing on Protein first. I've worked too hard to get this surgery, and I am committed to losing the weight, so I just keep on pushing through each and every day. I know it's hard for you, especially with feeling weak, but it will get better.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
