I Am Not A Good Cook - Any Ideas Regarding What On Restaurant Foods That Will Work Well With The Plan

Recommended Posts

I am very impressed you are able to eat those things six weeks out. You must have a sleeve of steel!!!

LOL, yeah, I was given green light for regular bari diet a while ago, and immediately had almost a full week of business travel -- so I had no choice but to eat out. Major thing is chew chew chew. I don't really seem to have anything that upsets me, which actually in a way sort of sucks.

I do want to start having more meals at home and this week I've been working on that, but I just want to point out that you can make decent choices while eating out. My nutritionist even asked me to speak at our upcoming WLS support group that has a topic about choices for eating out to talk about my experiences. The one I feel like was probably the worst choice on that list was the shrimp scampi. She and I talked about that having too much fat, but that it still got the Protein in.

I guess what I'm saying JaneRose is, make change gradually and don't beat yourself up if you do eat out. I dont' think its the end of the world if you make Protein centric choices that are relatively low fat -- myfitnesspal is quite good for helping you see the values of the items you can choose when eating out somewhere.

I have found that when going out with friends most restuarants have something that will fit into your meal plan. What I do is find out where I will be having dinner and then going online and looking at their menu. This allows me to plan ahead so that I am not tempted to order something that sounds good and that I should not be eating. You can even find something to eat at fast food restuarants which I very seldom eat at any more but sometimes a quick meal is all you have time for when on the road or busy and short on time. I have some receipes that I have made and if you would like me to send them to you just drop me a line.

I will take some of your recipes :)

Janerose, you can do this at home. Just give it a try. This Sunday afternoon, before the Super Bowl, run to the grocery store and pick up:

1 pound ground turkey

1 onion

1 green pepper

2 carrots

2 cans of diced stewed tomatoes

2 cans of kidney Beans

Chili powder

1 case of canning pint jars with lids (one time expense, but then you'll have them forever)

Dice the veggies

Heat up a pan (5 qt)

Add turkey and brown

Add 2 Tbsp chili spice

stir

Add veggies, tomatos, Beans

stir

cook on low for an hour stirring occassionally

Rinse jars, fill and toss in the freezer.

Grab one on the way out the door.

I do this every other week. It costs me about $5 and I have healthy, tasty lunches everyday. The prep time is around 10 minutes. That's it.

Do it once and you'll see how easy it really is.

And, you can do this with many other soups/foods as well. I love my little pint jars.

I am going to get these ingredients tomorrow! Sounds great..and easy.. I hope I dont screw it up lol. Ground beef/turkey has been hard for me ever since surgery.. I really cannot tolerate it much, but Im going to see if it works for me here :) Thanks

That was the case for me as well until I started following someones advice on this website. I now brown my seasoned ground beef and then put it in a blender. Then it goes back in the pan to fully cook and/or I add a sauce of some kind. The meat gets a "Taco Bells" consistency. Works like a charm!

janerose,

Caprese salad is probably another good choice. Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato slices, fresh or dried basil, a tiny bit of olive oil , balsamic vinegar, cracked black pepper. If you buy the bocconcinis (little round mozzarella balls sold floating in water) and grape tomatoes, there is no cutting involved.

The baked frozen meatballs , mentioned earlier, warmed up on some Pasta sauce and grated cheese on top works great too.

Hope all is going well.

Edited to say, today I cooked the ground beef fully and THEN put it in the blender. It turned out great. No need to put it back into the pan. Two steps instead of 3.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
