Coffee/caffeine...to Do Or Not To Do?

Recommended Posts

I remember the nuts and or bariatric techs saying not coffee/caffeine...I think the main reason was cuz its a diaretic and will dehydrate you...

Has anyone had any experience with coffee/caffeine intake. I laid off for about the first 2 months but have started to have an occasional cup of java!!

It is soooooooo hard to avoid on these crisp mornings!!

I was given coffee in the hospital at post-op, so I've enjoyed it daily with no ill effects. Definitely follow your physician's/dietician's recommendations, though!

to have or not to have, you can have coffee, you can not have coffee, you can have this but not that......

i know all doctors are different, but i still don't understand why one dr or NUT. can say something so different than another. There all going for the same ending, that we're all fine and healthy and successful - so how there be so many opinions?

I wonder that too, Kathy. When I see people on here posting about how they slipped by eating a bite of solid food two days too early, and getting really upset and worried about the effects, I get a little mad because I feel like we're not being given accurate, results-based information. WLS is not new; it's been around for decades. Human nutrition, while constantly evolving like anything else in medicine and science, isn't a new field either. So why are they acting like they just started figuring everything out within the last 10 years or so?

I guess this is an example of a time when you have to be your own healthcare advocate. Educate yourself, talk to other people (this forum is a great place to do that), and above all, listen to how YOU feel.

Every doc is different, but my patient education packet says I will be able to have ONE cup of coffee or tea per day after I get home from surgery. And I have a VERY conservative doctor when it comes to diet. I'll be on Clear Liquids and full liquids longer than most I see on this forum. So, if he's comfortable with coffee- I'm drinkin' it!!

UXgrrl, thanx for your reply. To all in sleevelandunsure.png

Heres another example of differences. my DOS was 12/15/11 - my NUT told me not to take any Vitamins yet. I am always reading from Newbies about there Vitamins they are taking. But like i said, NUT said no. I asked why should we wait, she just said she would rater wait for my 2nd visit, which is 2/8/12. Oh well, go figurewacko.png

My doc was definitely the rebel of the group...i didn't have to crush my meds or do a leak test, or have a drain put in...he was awesome...

But you are correct, there are many, many, different "opinions" when it comes to the WLS "rulz"...

My surgeon allows for one caffeinated beverage per day. I shake a scoop of chocolate Muscle Milk into eight ounces of cold home-brewed coffee every day. That means no caffeine headache and 16 grams of Protein for me.

I read about other patient's limitations and allowances with a grain of salt. I carefully selected my surgeon and I think he has my success in mind. My success directly correlates to his success.

It would be interesting to put together a spreadsheet of the various dietary timelines to see the vast difference in pre- and post-surgical regimens! Does one exist?

I was told to wait 3 weeks for coffee and then it was ok. I have about 2 cups a day. Since I had to give up diet coke there's no way I'm giving up coffee if I don't have to.

I was told it's fine once your tummy is healed three or four weeks later, six to be really conservative. I love coffee, seriously could not give it up. It might have been a deal breaker for me. ;)

My nutritionist and surgeon both recommend no caffeine after surgery, ever. They say it can cause ulcers. That said, I asked the nutritionist during my last visit and she said that she didn't anticipate I would have issues with occasional caffeine, as long as I wasn't drinking a pot of coffee a day.

Since I was able to give it up post-op my body has gotten used to being without it, so I don't drink coffee or caffeine every day - but I do periodically treat myself to a half-caff Starbucks mocha latte (boy is that a BIG splurge!).

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
