Gastric Sleeve Surgery Dec 5th And Understand How Much I Loved Food

Recommended Posts

Sleeved Dec 5th, had a rough first week and a half and feel pretty damn good now. No pain except for minor discomfort where I was cut and some heartburn in the evening. All good so far except my craving for food. I realize why I got fat. I would steal for a deep fried chicken or Grilled steak right now. LOL I miss all the food that I dumped in my mouth. Good days and bad days. Christmas is coming and I'm on puree food. But I realize that I had to change for the better. My diabeties is gone, no insulin! Hooray!!!!! healing faster than ever. Just miss the food. This part of the journey really got me thinking about why I did the sleeve. I was a food addict for sure. Just venting I guess, needed to get that out. sorry

OMG! YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I am post op 9 days (DOS: 12/13/11) and I would eat a cow raw!!! I want so bad to eat something! I'm on Clear Liquids for 14 days and just dying! I see my doc for post appt today and I'm praying to God that he lets me off two days early to allow puree foods on Christmas day. I believe that most of us that have fought weight have a food addiction. I hear from blogs on this site that the cravings and desires do get better and less frequent. Hang in there....it will all be worth it in the end when we are struttin our thin selves!

Yes I feel the same way! I was sleeved the 6th and have not been hungry or craving much of anything. It is like my appetite is completely gone. How strange is that? I make myself drink Protein Shakes since I'm on liquids only right now until the 27th. I guess all doctors have different plans if you can already have purees.

I can totally relate!! I am 6 mo post op and remember crying for the first 2 weeks as I watched TV with all of the yummy comercials and food network shows. lol I didn't realize until then how much I really loved food. I have no deep seated issues or feelings that I was eating away, I just loved food! Real food, sweets, Cookies, chips, steak you name it I love it. It really does get better as you get farther along. You can eat some of the foods you love just a whole lot less. The weightloss makes it all worth while. I feel just like I did in my 20's before I had a weight problem and I'm 20 lbs from goal. Just hang in there it is so worth it.

Hi Royboy, I have had diabetes II for the past 10 yrs. or so. I always heard that the sleeve will help the situation, decrease it, or even get rid of it. My surgery was 12/15/11. My sugars are they always were. I use a little insulin.

you realized that you don't have diabetes on your own cuz your sugars were fine? your sugars were just really low, average. i was hoping, and still hoping my diabetes will be gone.

As far as loving food - you betcha i do. DH made popcorn (which i love) last night. he started to get up to the other room cuz of me, and i told him something like i am going to have to be around food all the time - i (or you) can't run away always.

I told him whenever i see food that i really really really want, at this early stage in the game i can get away with the simple old adage, "nothing taste as good as thin feels" Of course i'm only 7 days post-op so i'm sure it won't always be that easy, i need to always give myself encouragement, constantly say something like "eating that food isn't worth it"

I need to get healthy, build up my self-confidence & self esteem. I think we all need that, right?

i think about all the stuff i'll be able to do once i've lossed weight like walking without huffing without puffing. is a big thing for me.

To all of are good health for the new year, and all that follow.

Everybody just try to hang on. It does get better, they're not just saying that. And sip Protein whenever you even think about food... it does kill the urge of the moment.

I think I compensated for the lack of food in the beginning by watching the Food Network nonstop. It didn't bother me, somehow it comforted me. Weird, huh.

The first week out of surgery I would go to the grocery store like I was going to the cemetary and cry, litereally stand in the grocery store and cry.....totally know how you feel, but that goes away when you get used to things. keep your chin up it's only going to get better!

DOS 12/15/11 No lie, my husband said I woke up from a sound sleep, sat up in bed & yelled out "bring me a bowl of cheez-its!"

I did this too! My husband said he thought I might need an intervention:-) I talked about this at support group in December, and a bunch of the WLS patients there did the same thing after surgery. If not the food network, they were buying cookbooks or reading recipes online - doing something to scratch the itch to interact with food in some way.

I looked at tons of sleeve friendly recipes online! It was very helpful to be thinking about food in a positive way. I took advantage of that time to get more familiar with the things I would be eating after liquids and learning how to prepare them.

My diabetic numbers are awesome, 84 in the morning, 115 a hour and half after meals. The sleeve did this. I'm so glad I'm not alone on the food craving thing. LOL getting better every day. Been feeling nausea after eating and a tummy feeling like full of bubbles, so today I cut back to two heaping tablespoons of cottage cheese or puree Soup and feel better. have to get used to this small stomach I guess. good luck everyone! And thanks for the replies

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
