Will I Lose My Hair?

Recommended Posts

Question....will I potentially still lose some of my hair if I am getting in all 60-80grams of Protein a day. Since 2 days post-op I haev always gotten in at least 60g protein. Is there still a chance? I think my doctor said this happens at around 3-4 months....let me know if this has happened to any of you!!!!

hair loss is a big topic on the board. If you do a search (Upper right hand corner of page), you will find a lot of hits.

I thought I was going to pass this phase as I, too, for the most part, took in all of my Protein and then some. I was very diligent about my Vitamins as well. I have (had) very thick hair and never had a history of losing hair, even with previous weight loss. But ... just before the 5 month mark, it started coming out. I added Biotin to my regimen, and so far ... still losing hair. I would say I have lost about 1/3 of it. Maybe a bit more.

I know some people are able to dodge this bullet, but I think it a crap shoot.

Everyone is different BUT from what I've seen mostly everyone loses hair :( ...I've seen where people take all the required Protein and 5,000 Biotin a day and still lose their hair.

The good news is, it does grow back :) ...some people have opted for wigs or hair extensions (which are my personal favorite) during the Hair loss stage.

I thought I could avoid the hair loss, I did EVERYTHING I could-- (NIoxin, Biotin, 80 grams of protien, and all sorts of hair vitmains and regular, not chemically treating my hair.) I thought I was out of the woods then BAM at 3.5 months until now it has been falling out like crazy. I have cried at few times. It still looks good, but has half the volume. Luckily I had more hair than a wooly mammoth to begin with. But My primary doctor says its from the trauma of the surgery, the anesthesia, and the rapid weight loss. Its hard to avoid. I hope you can avoid it-- its slightly traumatizing-- esp. if your hair has been your security blanket like mine over the years.

Do what ever you can, but be prepared for the worst.... good luck!

I've read it's a reaction caused from the shock and stress of the surgery and has nothing to do with Protein or anything else.

I have had a few surgeries and always lose hair a few months after so I tend to agree with this.

I have long thick hair that I always get lots of compliments on so am so scared of losing it. Are there any hairstyles that I could try that minimize the appearance of thining hair?

I am 2.5 months in and I am losing my hair. It still looks really good, but I am finding alot of hair in the drain after showering and in my comb and hair brush. I know it will grow back and it's due to the stress and trauma of surgery and weight loss. It will be a slow process. It does scare me though... I love my hair. But on a good note, my body is looking better every day....... aureola.gif

Unfortunately it happens.. I lost a lot of hair around the third month up until 7 or 8th.. I took my Vitamins and was taking 5000 Biotin... it scared the pants out of me. I can tell you that around the 11 month, I noticed new hair coming in... So don't worry.. it will soon pass...

I started losing a ton about 2 weeks ago. I take Vitamins and Biotin. I must say, thank goodness for hats, beanies and clip in hair!

I did have hair loss pretty heavily beginning at around 4 months post op despite getting between 80-100 grams of Protein almost immediately post op. Mine did a lot of thinning, but thank goodness no bald spots! It was very alarming, despite the fact that I had researched and was aware of this side effect.

I don't seem to be having a lot of Hair loss now. I am on a Multi w/Iron, Vit D3, Biotin, Calcium, and Magnesium. The only thing I've done different recently is added in Silica. It may be a coincidence and I was slowing down on the hair loss anyway. Here's a recent post on another hair loss thread that I posted:

The 4 month mark is where i noticed a lot of hair loss too. My suggestion would be to keep up the Protein, take a multi with Iron in it, and continue the Biotin if you take it, to encourage the new Hair growth. I started taking the Biotin months before my surgery, and even though it didn't stop my hair loss, I am seeing tons of new growth coming in now. I did get my waist length hair cut to right below my shoulders. It was way over due anyway!! I don't know if anything has slowed it down or if it is doing it on its own, but I am not noticing near as much hair loss. In fact, mine may be back to normal now, unless I go through another loss later. I don't know if it helped, but I did start taking Silica after I noticed it coming out so bad. May be just the timing, and mine was about to slow down on its own. Either way, I am probably gonna continue getting in the protein, multi w/iron, Biotin and Silica til I am at least a yr out. I know it's worrisome, in fact, as prepared as I thought I was about this matter, I totally freaked out. It's quite scary. But the hair does grow back!!

Good luck!!

:)

This is EXACTLY what I heard as well, and I really think this is the real answer!!!

There are lots of whys this happens stress/diet etc. I read an article about hairloss post op and what it said in a nutshell was When you are going through those first few weeks after your surgery where you can't really eat a lot your body puts all your nutrition toward maintaining muscle mass and just getting by so your hair suffers. You don't see break off right away because it takes a few months for your hair to grow to the length where breakage will occur. So think of your hair strand as a time line. scalp Thick strand, thick strand, thick strand (surgery) thin strand, thick strand, thick strand. The hair will break when it's about an inch long. Blah this isn't making sense but it's kinda like an hourglass the skinny middle is the period in which you had surgery, where it will break off. But YES you will more than likely lose a lot of hair no matter what.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
