The Clears.... The Clears!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! So I had a very successful surgery on December 13th, and am now at home getting along just fine.

.....Except for one problem: I CANNOT HANDLE ANY MORE CLEAR LIQUIDS!

I was on one week clears pre-op, and breezed through it! I even had moreenergy than before. No issues with it at all. Now, post- surgery, I am on the same diet, but I cannot have any Protein powders at all. I am extremely hungry. I also find that my tastebuds have changed, and all the SF Jell-O, Gatorade, juice, etc etc tastes so sweet and grossly fake. The company I went through (not the surgeon) advocates 2 weeks from my leak test of clears, then 2 weeks of full liquids, then 2 weeks of mushies, then 2 weeks of soft. Does this seem intense to anyone else? I'm not even dying for things I can chew, just some strained mushroom Soup or something!

I need some advice (as I feel I am truly going crazy). One week post op, am I ok to have full liquids? Or something? Anything?

We are sleeve sisters! I am glad you had a successful surgery. I am hungry too but am on full liquids. I too am on restriction until 8 weeks postop just a slightly different schedule. Can you add beneprotein to your clears? Also, dont hesitate to call your NUT and explain what youre felling. Hang in there and every day is a day closer to goal.

Two weeks at each stage is a long time. I felt the same way today. I had my surgery on the 14th and couldn't stand it anymore. I feel so weak and dizzy I had to eat something so I tore into a pudding cup. Well I got half way through and had to stop because my sleeve started to spasm. Now I feel better so I'll try to stick to clears again. My Dr wants 7-10 days. Good luck with your remaining time on clears.

I completely understand what you are going through. Tomorrow I will be 14 days out. I am on sf clears until 4wks post op. 6wks total if you count 2 wks pre op. I was allowed Protein starting day 8. It's hard when you see that others are quickly able to move on to other foods and drinks. I did allow myself Gatorade and regular juice when I was feeling weak though. It's definitely a struggle for me too. I have to say my diet is far more strict.....no meat until week 9?! Hang in there sis.

From what I gather from almost ALL the people with complications are due to them going to fast advancing with their diets. I did notice one guy that ate apple sauce which is acidic only 3 days post op. to no surprise an abscess formed. So now due to my research I am now a firm believer that full liquids as long as you can in order for your stomach to heal properly. Note it takes an average of 14 days for scar tissue to completely cover the staples. So logically you dont want to hinder the natural healing process with solids or semi solids.

I am not a doctor but I have had plenty of cuts and scrapes to learn from lol

My surgeon and NUT have a 1 week progression towards full, 1 week to puree, 1 week to soft. Soft will last 2 weeks. Talk to your Nut and see if you can have full liquids a little early. some Drs are pretty strict.

Our program is 3 days Clear Liquids, 2 weeks full liquid, 2 weeks pureed Protein, then soft foods. I would think at 1 week out you could handle cream Soups. Strain them thoroughly and give it a shot. Everyone's programs are different, but our bodies are too. You need to get through this journey physically and emotionally too. If some Soup will make you feel better, I say go for it!

If you have calcium chews, they really help those first few weeks. Chewing something, anything, helps you feel "normal"

I agree with the others, call your nutritionist and let him or her know how you are feeling. Also, some others have had good results by chewing ice. I was allowed SF popsicles while on clears, which gave me something to chew.

You definitely don't want to advance without medical guidance, though. Those restrictions are in place to (hopefully) keep you from having physical problems while your new sleeve heals.

I know it seems like forever now, but you'll soon be on to the next stage and then back on regular food and this stage will seem like it went by really fast. :)

Good luck!! So glad you're on the loser's bench!! :)

I finally hit full liquids yesterday at day 11 and I am so glad. I had a four week liquid preop and then 10 days of clears plus 3 days of full. I agree it stinks but I just had to push through it. I was allowed SF popsicles like Lissa and those helped A LOT.

I emailed my NUT and she was really nice about giving me some good suggestions about how to get a little variety into my clear liquid diet. She said even though you have to strain them, to get a variety of Soups so you get different flavors. That was helpful because I felt like I had nothing different to eat. She reminded me I could have hot chocolate which felt like a treat.

You can do it. Soon we'll be on mushy/pureed!

Thanks so much for the advice and support guys! I am officially 8 days out and have made the executive decision to move on to very gentle full liquids ( skim milk, YOP, strained cream Soups, etc). I am sipping a skim hot chocolate right now! So good :) This will especially help since today is in-law family Christmas... merry Christmas to me!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
