hamburger and pot roast were very easy for me to eat when i was able to eat meat at 4 weeks out. steak sat a little heavy until about week 7.

i had no restrictions on anything at each food stage, it was as tolerated.

I notice that a lot of people are eating red meat early, i.e. hamburger. My doctor said I can't have red meat for 4 to 5 months. Has anyone else been on a restriction from red meat this long?

I'm 7 weeks out and no problems so far eating.

Breakfast: Protein shake with instant coffee or egg with Morning Star Sausage pattie, or bacon

Lunch: tuna with olive mayo and dill relish with 4 crackers or costco italian meatballs with BBQ Sauce or some type of sauce. I've also made a pizza out of a 1/2 pc of flatout bread with pizza sauce, turkey pepperoni, cheese and sometimes add Morning Star meal starter cumbles. (like crumbled sausage)

Dinner: Shrimp, stew meat in crock pot, meatballs, hot links, chicken or hamburger meat. I have not tried steak yet. If we go out to eat Mexican, I will get a soft beef taco and just eat the inside, not the tortilla. Oh and I haven't tied lettuce yet etiher. Refried Beans are good too.

Snacks; Protein Bars or shakes, fruit...like cherries, strawberries with greek yogurt and some granola. (sometimes I have that for breakfast)

i was allowed wendys chili at 2 weeks outs. Other red meats took a little more time to get used to, shrimp really bothers me for some reason.

afternoon snack: Beef jerkey.. I found small 1.5 oz bag of very lean Jerky, 22 grams Protein, 120 calories, 4 carbs

That sounds like a great snack! if you don't mind me asking, what brand and where can I buy it?

Morning NEVER changes.. my tummy doesnt take food in very well in AM so I always start with EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control premixed Protein drink.. 17 grams Protein - 110 calories and 6 carbs.. can purchase at any Walmart, WalGreens, Meijers and costco.

Mid Morning I have an Atkins Protein Bar

Lunch: 1/4 cup Fat Free Cottage cheese and 1/4 cup of meat, usually imitation seafood or cubed chicken breast

afternoon snack: Beef jerkey.. I found small 1.5 oz bag of very lean Jerky, 22 grams protein, 120 calories, 4 carbs

The above hardly ever changes, it allows me to hit 70 - 76 grams protein with only approx 600 - 700 calories and under 30 carbs!

dinner is always a portion of meat of some kind, always either grilled chicken, seafood, or fish.... Sometimes I will get Taco Bell pinto's & cheese, no red sauce add meat... Yum!!! Wendy's chilli is awesome and so filling!

That beef jerky sounds like a great snack. LOL I tried to just quote that part but I screwed up.

What brand is it and where do you buy it? Thanks :)

GREAT thread idea - thank you!

I'm 9 weeks out...

First thing: Protein hot cocoa (Unjury chocolate splendor, 8 oz warm milk, 1T unsweetened cocoa & salt)

Breakfast: 3 egg bites (Eggface recipe), or 1 egg / cheese "omelet", or 3 oz chobani greek yogurt

Lunch: 2 T Peanut Butter w/ 3 mini crackers, or tuna/cottage cheese / lemon pepper, or sliced lunch meat / cheese, or 3 oz grilled salmon from the salad bar place downstairs (my new favorite!)

Snack: Protein shake of some kind - usually a nectar one

Dinner: Some kind of saucy meat. (probably need to add a few veggies / carbs here)

I usually get 40 - 45 minutes of cardio exercise / day - stationary bike, treadmill, or hill walking.

Some days I think I'm lower in carbs than I really want to be. Like, under 20 grams. I'm still tweaking...

I'm about 2 months out and have been wondering this same thing! Is what I'm eating okay? Still getting used to solid foods as I got the free and clear at 6 weeks. Typically, I've been eating:

Breakfast - 1 scrambled egg with ketchup OR 1/2 cup cottage cheese with canned pineapple

lunch - beef Jerky, cashews, and string cheese OR rice and Beans (~1 Tablespoon of each) OR 1/2 cup tuna salad (eaten over 2 sittings)

dinner - deli meat with a piece of cheese OR ground beef lettuce wrap (~3 T meat with 1 romaine lettuce leaf) OR meat taco (don't eat the tortilla) OR baked fish

If I snack, it might be some juice or half a Builder's bar or a string cheese or a small handful of nuts. I've tried eating chicken, but it doesn't go down well most of the time. I burnt out on Protein shakes, so I've been avoiding them, but it seems like everyone has 1 a day.

I love frozen yogurt and it goes down so well. I usually have it about once every other week or so. I've had some not so good for me things and they usually feel horrible going down which I'm grateful for. It's nice that eating well is starting to become instinctual.

Navelbunnie, I'm amazed your tummy doesn't like chicken, but doesn't object to beef Jerky, or lettuce! i haven't been brave enough to try those yet.

Do you read the World According to Eggface blog? If you like frozen yogurt and struggle to get your Protein in, you might check out her recipes for Protein ice cream. Haven't tried them yet myself, but they sure look yummy!!

How is everyone doing with coffee? I thought it may be too acidic after surgery but I would love to add some Decaf to my shakes!

Hi HDubSleevery,

I've tolerated Decaf coffee well since the first week after surgery. I use Starbucks Via Decaf Italian Roast. One of my fav Protein shakes is 1/2 C. plain soy milk, 1/2 C. Starbucks Via Decaf Italian Roast, and 1 scoop Gold Standard whey Protein French vanilla.

I am cleared for caffeine now that I am 3 months out, but I still drink the decaf if I'm having it in my evening protein shake.

Hi, I'm looking for good snack ideas. Can you give me information about the lean Jerky?

Sure thing.. it actually is a very well known brand: Jack Links - almost any party store/gas station sells this brand accross the U.S. key is to find the little bag with 22 grams of Protein..... most of the time you see 12 grams or 15 grams, but this is actually 22 grams of protien in a 1.5 oz bag (1/4 cup = 2 ounces) so you are getting just under 1/4 cup of jerkey.

Jack Links Premium Cuts - Original Beef Jerkey - 22g Protein - 1.5 oz bag

97% fat free 1.5 Total Fat 5g Total Carbs 120 Calories

In Michigan we have a store called "Menards" - its a cross between a Tractor Supply Store and a Lowes

I can purchase the jerkey at Menards for $1.99 a bag. My local Wal-Greens pharmacye sells it, but it is $3.49 a bag

So, I go to Menards once a month and buy about 30 bags of it... I always eat a bag a day, sometimes two.. they are so handy to keep in my purse for a quick protien snack.

Hope this helps.

Almost 3 months out. I hate eating anything that isn't mushy still because I don't chew chew chew. I need to work on that.

Breakfast. I am always late so it is a hard boiled egg or string cheese on the go.

An hour later Water or protien drink or something yummy to drink with lots of ice!

Mid-Morning through Late Afternoon: Soup I eat Soup all day long until it is gone. I will eat chilli or clam chowder or chicken noodle or chicken tortilla. That is about 2 cups and takes me a good 6 hours.

Dinner: Egg, cheese, Fish or meat of some kind.

Then more drinking, popsicles, fudge pops or ice cream depending on how much weight I lost for the week.

Occassionally I like some doritos or cheetos and I savor them.

I don't eat bread, but will eat Beans, potatoes and rice...If it is in the soup. and the occasssional french fry if someone has some on their plate :)

I don't count carbs or calories or fat or anything. I just watch the scale and only weigh in every Monday. I only really eat organic and only things that are freshly made with little to no perservatives. Except my MSG filled cheetos or Doritos on occassion. I would love to cut out artificial sweetners, but Water isn't my friend everyday so I have to drink light drinks or zero calorie drinks.< /p>

I am down 54 pounds in 12 weeks without working out.

I will start working out this month.

I am loosing my hair which will probably get worse.

I need to work on chewing more and also need to work on making sure to take my Vitamins.

I would like to eat some salad soon, but not until I really get the chewing down!

Thanks for your reply. I didn't see it until today. They do have some Jack Link's in Korea but not that particular one. I might have to order from the states. Thanks so much.

Franny, wow, that sounds like a long time. I had to wait until 6 weeks out. I really haven't had any problems except with hamburger meat. If it isn't cooked just right, it seems rubbery while I'm chewing it. As if I can't break it down enough with my teeth. It grosses me out! So the only way I will eat it, is if it is super tender and easy to chew. Maybe there's a reason in your own personal journey that your surgeon doesn't want you eating red meats. Give him a call. It doesn't hurt to ask. ;)

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
