Why am I still a size 20???

Recommended Posts

before surgery I had lost 52 pounds on my own, after surgery I have lost 22 pounds. When I try my size 18 jeans I still cant fit in them! from the waist up I have been losing, but my theighs remain the same (big hips run in my family).

Did anybody else have this issue?

Will I ever stop wearing size 20?

no, you won't be doomed to wear 20's the rest of your life.

For more pear shaped persons it just takes a little bit longer to go down a size (HUG) it sucks I know.

Yes, I have this problem, but I think mine is hereditary too. I have a my mother's knees and there is nothing I can do about it short of liposuction, which I cannot afford. The only time my pants size was not dictated by my legs was when I weighed 128 at 5'10" and that will never happen again. I was underweight for 3 days in my early 20's (hehe). And now I have to stuff all that extra skin in, too. Unless I decide to go to Mexico for more surgery in a couple of years, I will just have to be happy with being more healthy.

I am 63 years old which has something to do with it too. If you are younger, you will be more successful. My daughter has lost almost 100 lbs since her sleeve. She thinks she has a lot of loose skin, but she really doesn't. Keep pressing on and you will be out of 20's in no time.

I started out 280lbs and 22/24 pants and tops. It seems like the first 60-70lbs I was still wearing 20's. It was crazy for me!! I didn't understand how!

Now, I am 177lbs and wear an 8!! It is like these last 35lbs or so I have gone down ALOT of inches. Hang in there and keep up the good work, those inches will start melting before your eyes!

I understand your frustration. I started at 225 (and even hovered near 230 once) and a size 18...and now I'm 204 lbs and a size 18. At least my pants are baggier, but I can't fit into a 16 still.

I know exactly how you feel. I started at 280 lbs and am 5'4". I have lost 51 lbs. I was wearing a very tight 24w pants and am still in them. The only thing now is that they are super lose. I tried the next size down on last week. They fit but was still tight and uncomfortable. Oh by the way, I'm definitely a pear shape.....large legs and butt. I have lost a lot on my top half and ame down 2-3 sizes in my shirts. I guess my top half will lose first. Sigh!

If you haven't taken your measurements, take them. I took my measurements right as I was starting preop. Then I took them again a couple of weeks ago. I didn't think I was losing down below but I was, just slower. I had lost 2 inches in my knees ... I think that's what it was...and like 1.5 inches in my calves. All together I'd lost 19.75". So the weights coming off just not the way I'd like it to.

I blogged all about it and my measurements if you are interested. My blog address is in my signature.

I feel you. I started out in 22/24 at 292 lbs. I'm down 45 lbs. and am still wearing 22. Granted it's some pants that were cut smaller and I couldn't wear them before but they still say size 22. The pants I was wearing are still fitting but a lot looser. I am pear-shaped and my big ass is the bane of my existence. It's a family thing. But there is hope. When I was 145 I wore a size 12 so that's my goal. I know I will get there. You will too. Hang in there!

I am also a 20/22 I have one pair of 18's that fit (exciting!!!). I also have some 20's that are still too tight. I think the quality of clothes has a lot to do with sizing - the 20's that don't fit are Faded Glory from Wal-Mart, the 18's that do fit are a nice brand name from Bergner's. I read an article on these boards the other day where a woman mentions she normally wears anywhere from a 10 to 0. The 0 is from Chicos. Yes, let me tell you I will be having some of THOSE pants when I get small enough just so I can say "These are 0's"

I'm pear shaped and the clothing thing happened to me, too. After losing 40 or so pounds after surgery, I was still wearing my size 20 pants and it really bothered me. Then about a month ago I went shopping for fall clothes and found myself in a size 12 missus pants and medium shirts! Now that I'm down 60+ pounds, the 12's are getting baggy but not quite enough to move to a 10. It'll happen for you, too. Just need a little more time & patience to let your body do its thing....

Hang in there. I started out in 24 & 26's (pear shaped). I lost 43lbs prior to surgery plus another 20lbs after surgery and I was still wearing the same size although they were getting baggy. My tops had already dropped from a 3x to 1x.

Then, magically (it seemed like over night) I dropped to an 18. Friday night, I went out with some friends for Girls Night Out, and I was wearing size 16 jeans and a misses xl top . It was awesome.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
