Hardest habits to break/adopt

What was the hardest habit for you to break? For me it will be eating while I drive. I have a long commute and have enjoyed many paper-bag meals over the years. Also the jaunts to the dollar store or Walgreens over lunch... i would usually go for makeup or toilet paper or something, and also walk our with chocolate :rolleyes:

I have no doubt I will kick these habits, but will miss them.

What was the hardest habit for you to adopt? I'll be sleeved this month and am a little concerned that i haven't practiced chewing my food into oblivion (noticed at lunch today while scarfing down my food), and I haven't stopped drinking liquid during my meals. I just keep forgetting about it. Hopefully I can learn these new behaviors quickly! :blink:

What was the hardest habit for you to break & adopt? I can't name just one. Drinking diet soda. Giving up caffine prior to surgery (dehydrates you so NUT said no more or very limited amounts) Eating fast food....hey post op I eat a taco every now and then in the car. Chewing slowly. Not gulping down liquids.

Now is your time to learn new habits - post op it is a matter of survival. Good luck!

What was the hardest habit for you to break?

Giving up coffee and Diet Mt. Dew. LOL loved my caffeine. Now that I am allowed a cup of coffee a day, my taste buds revolted and I no longer like the taste, go figure.

What was the hardest habit for you to adopt?

Chewing a million times before swallowing and making my meal last 30-45 minutes. I still am having issues with that and I am 6 weeks post op now. But try try again!

The hardest habit for mo to break is eating while watching TV. I have always been one to fill-up my plate and grab the remote.

Postop I found that if I wanted to live by the rules of my sleeve, that Id need to dedicate my meal time to just that (my meal).....

So now when I sit down at the TABLE, I am concentrating on eating slowly, Protein first, and nothing to drink. When I finish my meal I glance up at the clock to see what time it is, and add 30 min. To know when I can fix me a CRYSTAL LIGHT.

I drink with meals, I do drink Diet Soda on occasion (though it doesn't taste very good to me any longer), I haven't given up coffee (but I drink it maybe once a week), and I do eat in my car out of paper bags (not meal deals, but maybe a kids hamburger, or something off kids menu). So, there's a few things I can relate to. It's not necessarily about giving up things, but learning to have them in moderation. I think the only thing I really am sad to have given up is Motrin. It was a great pain reliever for me and nothing compares. That is one rule I will adhere to faithfully. Snacking has been a hard one for me. The kind of snacking when you're not really hungry, but bored. It's about finding something to replace that. I'm working on it.

Regarding the chewing, I was on 2 weeks of liquid pre-op and 3 weeks of liquid post op. I've never been a real fast eater but during that 5 weeks I lost any speed at all. When you are drinking things that are not all that appealing, it becomes a very slow process to get it down. And obviously, there's no chewing at all during those 5 weeks. I think that works well in teaching the person. At the point I was going through it, it was lost on me but now I see it.

And regarding the making a meal last 30 minutes, we do not do that. For instance, I am able to only eat about 80% of a single egg scrambled. Scramble one and see what that quantity looks like. As long as we put 1 minute between bites, we do not have to force the meal to take 30 minutes. I bought a little egg timer and I sit with it on the table and turn it over as I take my bites. It takes me 20 to 23 minutes to eat that portion of a scrambled egg. Ask if you need to make a meal to last 30 minutes or if it's about how long you wait between bites. If you are very small portions like I am, there's no reason to drag it out any longer than you have to. And in the beginning almost everyone is very small portions.

For the most part I've been very lucky. Things have fallen into place so easy for me I can't even believe it. I wish I were losing weight faster but I think a part of the reason I'm emotionally able to cope with that is because the overall process hasn't been that difficult. I miss my caffeine because I am so tired but I'll get that back soon. And way more than food, I miss being able to take Advil. But the thing I miss most, I just can't have so I have to get over it.

I smoked for many years and gave it up when I bought my first home as I was very low on cash. I think about this in much the same way. There were some rough spots, but now I look back and I'm really glad I had the good sense to just do it. I can't even imagine myself as a smoker now and I smoked close to 20 years. I hope some day I can't even imagine myself as ever having been fat. (At least with my clothes on..pretty sure the skin will be a reminder otherwise.)

All of the above was hard, slow chewing, dont drink for 30 mins after eating, giving up caffeine & pop... :angry:

Eating slowly, small bites, chew, chew, chew... still gets me all the time! I get hiccups way bad if I do not eat slow :o , and I am normally such a fast eater that this is really a hard habit to break!!! LOL!

Not eating Breakfast is a bad habit I MUST BREAK! I am determined to be a thin HEALTHY person and I must do this...Also I MUST learn to take my Vitamins EVERYDAY...I WILL, I MUST, I SHALL LOL!

Over the past few days I have found myself mindlessly snacking. Not hungry, doesn't taste good, just eating because it's there. We had a carry in at work and those dang bags of chips call my name and I sit far away from them!! Maybe I need more work :D ????

I thought caffeine would be the hardest but it kind of naturally happened while I was on my pre-op diet. I think the hardest thing has been not drinking a sip or 2 while I eat and for 30 minutes after. I do it, but I don't like it!

The hardest habit to acquire is my Vitamins. I am terrible about it! For one thing I am not crazy about the ones I purchased- liked them before surgery and now the taste of the chewable makes me a little ill. I think I will go for some gummies after I use these up. I haven't even started my calcium! I have chewables that are like tootsie rolls and I can't have them yet and have been apathetic about getting any others. I am SUCH a complier but so bad about this! Shame meggie, shame!

I found that most behaviors with the sleeve are kind of forced, so they are not that hard to pick up. For example, you will find very early that if you don't chew, it is going to be very unpleasant. You won't make that mistake more than a couple of times. If you slip up, you will get an instant reminder. Same goes for the drinking with meals.

Toughest habit for me to pick up is the fluids. I still barely get in half of what I am supposed to. It doesn't seem to hinder my weight loss and I have healthy urine so it isn't a big concern at this point. It's just so hard for me.

For me the hardest is just SLOWING DOWN and chewing my food! I can still drink coffee and may even have a diet 7-Up about once a week. The Diet Coke, my mainstay, hasn't tasted right and I'm just as happy leaving it alone!

for me the hardest habit to break is not to eat something JUST because it's there.

I'm finding I can eat more than I probably should be able to (though not nearly as uch as I used to be able to). So if someone brings in doughnuts or Cookies, I have no problem eating them. That's been my problem this week. I'm still losing, but I won't be for long if this keeps up.

Today I'm knuckling down and coming back to basics with Protein, Protein, protein.

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
