So I am looking for people willing to talk about their co-ob issue and how it played in their surgery. Private message are ok. Just looking for some comfort that I am not the only high risk know to me.

no more thing the next morning you will go down for the xray to check for leaks, obviously you wont be able to drink anything before that, but after that you will get gatorade and I think tea? I don't really remember I stuck with the gatorade for fear of dehydration, after that it's mushies, you go straight to mushies, I believe I had oatmeal, yogurt and Jello brought up to me, now obviously there was no way I could eat it all, as a matter of fact I wasn't even hungery, but just a note they want you to be able to eat mushies' before they send you home, don't be scared that it is going to slow down your weight loss it wont, as a matter of fact I think it helped because I didn't hit that stall that everyone else seems to have when they go from liquids to mushies. and don't be surprised when one or two bites fill you up, don't pust it or force it, I followed the nutrionist rules and stop once i get that feeling that i've had enough and I've never gotten sick from over eaten.

That is what I was wondering about, that first "mushy" meal after the surgery, I would think right after the surgery it would be pretty difficult to eat anything, I think the yogurt would be the easiest thing to swallow and it has the most Protein. How were you in the begining about getting all that Protein in, it is supposed to be 60 to 80 grams but after I made my menu's (yogurt, Protein shakes, baby food gatoraide blah, blah, blah and etc) I heard it was gruesomly hard just to finish a small yogurt in one day in the first week post surgery much less the rest of the stuff and still making sure not to get dehydrated. Any advisements? I'm not worried to much in losing the weight super quick, I only have about 100 to 115 lbs to lose and I'm really doing this so my back pain will ease up, sitting at my desk all day gives me the worst tail bone pain so I opted for the weight loss surgery than the back surgery that is way more risky. Still I would love to fit back into my sze 8 Levis again by next Spring..(yeah, I'm a little vain on the inside, LOL :D )

Again your information is totally awesome!

yogurt will go down fine and it is the one thing I was able to eat the most of but I gotta tell you it all gets old real quick lol I got to the point that I couldn't even drink a Protein shake anymore it just wouldn't go down the taste and thickness of it just started to make me choke.. I finally order this stuff callled click protein it taste like coffee, alot of people on here will say it is the wrong protein, but liz ( the Nut ) was starting to get so worried about the amount of protein I was getting that she didn't care and told me to drink it even tho it wasn't whey... She also told me I could drink through a straw because I wasn't getting my fluids in and I told her I could drink more with a straw and she said fine then do it. She also allowed me smoothies shakes that I would make using yogurt, calorie countdown milk and fruit or I think in the beginning I was using the Torani Syrup instead of fruit and then moved on to real fruit later.

just remember - you are doing this to "save your life" ... I think we have all done this for that reason -- obesity kills, and I think the bottom line for all of us is that we wanted to live a full and healthy life, which is ultimately why we decided to have the weight loss surgery ... at least, that is true for me. You will do great -- ... this surgery has come a long way from years ago .. the risks are minimal compared to what it used to be ... and the long term benefits far outweigh the risks involved, at least, I believe that to be true.

As far as mushies go ... I still prefer mushies to solid foods and I'm 5 mos out ... they just seem to go down easier for me ... I prefer slenderizing/pulverizing my bean Soups and having them that way -- a great source of Protein and it's easy going down ... I've suggested this before - buy a baby bullet in Target and pulverize your Soups -- great way to incorporate Protein into your diet on mushy stage and thereafter ... chicken soups have usually have 6 gr protein per serving - a can is usually 2 servings -- and lentil soups usually is 8 gr per serving, usually 2 servings in a can -- and the vegetable lentil soups have a nice hearty taste, even when pulverizing. And I sometimes add beef broth or vegetable broth into the Soup when cooking to give added flavor and make the Soup thinner so it's easier going down too ...

good luck to you all -- you will all do great! I found that the first 3-4 weeks were an adjustment for sure -- thereafter, it was really much easier and continues to get easier every day/every month, etc.

oh - and go to your hospital's support groups if you can .. it's a great way to keep motivated, hear other's stories and get information ... keep the peace!

My surgery went great, but like a said I had a problem with the anesthesia so they kept me in the recovery room for a long time because my blood pressure shot up.. I got to my room around 10 pm at about 1 am my darling nurse came in to get me for my first walk, she came again at 5 or 6 am and after that I did the rest of the walks by myself and felt good. The first day home I rested walked down the block a couple of times and after that day, or once all the anesthesia was out of my systom I felt great, and seeing that scale move makes you feel even better lol I was back to normal by day 4, that Tuesday after my husband went back to work so 6 days later I was back to my regular schedule of taking care of the house and kids, i'm currently not working, but I think I would have been fine if I was, I had a desk job when I was working and got more rest at work then being home with the kids.

Hi!

My date is 3/13/12 and I'm starting to get anxious! I agree with you, I probably will get more rest at work to since I do a desk job, too much noise at home, my daughter and her two children (4 yrs old and 5 months old) are a noisey little bunch..LOL

Do you have any recommendations on what I items of food I should have on hand for the first week after surgery, I have Protein shake, yogurt, Protein drinks etc, but isn't it difficult to put anything heavy in the stomach the first week? I would think food is not interesting after having most of your stomach taken out  .

Thanks alot for all your help!!!!!

try to relax -- I would personally recommend broth -- go to the store & buy some packets of chicken broth .. get both, no sodium & regular - personally, I liked to mix 1/2 pack of each in a boiling cup of Water for flavor (the non sodium was to bland for me) ... you will enjoy hot liquids at first probably more than cold (for some reason this is the case w/most of us) .. it just seems to go down easier ..and if you have broth, you can count it toward your daily water requirements. I also highly recommend Bigelow Rasberry tea - the herbal/fruit kind (not the Zinger) .. I drink that all the time & add 3 packs of splenda in it .. it's nice & sweet and also helps me get my water requirements in now (and has replaced coffee for me since this is caffeine free and no longer am I allowed caffeine). Don't stress too much about Protein requirements -- you will get there eventually .. the first few weeks can be hard to try to get protein requirements in -- greek yogurt will be the easiest and fastest way to get your protein in ... when you are allowed mushies, try taking a can of lentil Soup, mixing w/vegetable broth, and pureeing in a baby bullet (you can get at target) and heating that up to have - it's warm so it goes down easy (at least for me) and once you puree & add vegetable broth, it's very liquidy - and it's loaded w/protein too (about 8 gr per serving - each can has 2 servings) and low in calories ... not that you have to worry about calories at this point, but if you can have 1/2 a can and then a few hours later another 1/2 can, you've already gotten 16 g+ of protein in your daily diet ... and then you have a yogurt & some other stuff, you're well on your way to meeting your requirements .... I'm 5.5 mos out now, and just now finding it easier to eat certain foods, and still in little portions ... so don't worry - it takes most of us more time to get to the meeting protein part than one would think -- you will be fine - you will do great -- cheers! Here's to a healthy you!!! ps - where are you having your surgery?

@ Rosiegirl. My surgeon, Dr. Yatco is going to the peer to peer apepal with GHI. Did Dr. Roslin do the peer to peer appeal for you as well?

Well, I have been a little down. My inital claim was denied. Dr Yatco is doing the peer to peer appeal. Had to do blood work, EKG over. It is a pain the $%^&?, what the insurance companies make you go through...... I am hoping, that the peer to peer appeal goes in my favor. If it doesn't, I may just give up.....

So you're having your surgery in Lennox? To the best of my knowledge, Dr. Roslin does not participate in GHI - but his partner Yatco does, I believe. The whole team is spectacular so you are in good hands! Every case is different, but I believe once you case is "appealed" you should get approval -- be patient, it will happen and leave it up to the doctors and they will figure it all out for you. good luck!

Just wanted to let you know that I got approved and will have surgery on May 10th with Dr. Roslin at Northern Westchester Hospital. Thank you for all your encouragement.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
