The story of an impatient chick in Kansas City

Recommended Posts

Hello again.

Great news - I received authorization from my insurance yesterday and have a date scheduled for surgery - October 11th. Now I'm trying to decide what flavor of Bariatric fusion Protein I should buy. LOL Apparently Dr. Hoehn's office insists that we use this brand for our 2 week pre-op diet. Any suggestions on flavors?

I'm so excited!

You don't have to use it if you don't want to. I had already ordered a sample variety pack of Bariatric Fusion from one of the sites (bariatric pantry i think) and actually really liked them. But when I went in for preop visit I just told them I already had some (which technically I did..lol) and used them and some other samples I had. My favorite of all the ones I tried happened to be the Bariatric fusion especially the Cappuccino which I did end up buying a tub of later and it cost the same at Dr. Hoehn's office as it did online or well depending on what website but they were all within a few dollars of each other. I would definitely suggest buying the sample pack online and if you don't like them then just use whatever you do like. I drank a lot, and still do, of the Atkins shakes.

Congratulations and welcome to the loser's bench!

I had surgery 6/21/11 and am down 115#! I was an out of state patient though. I live 20 minutes south of Belton, MO.

Husband and wife south of Blue Springs would love a local group. Feb. 1, 2012 with Dr. Hoehn. Counting the days!!! Wish you all would update your progress!

Thanks. I still want to lose another 30# to get ti my final goal of 125#. I', 5'3" (used to be 5'4#)..... guess I have shrunk so I changed my original goal from 135 to 125# because of that. I'm not saying its been a total cake walk because I have had to really work the sleeve and stay on the correct way of eating. I cheat occasionally but usually just as a treat. Holidays were a bit more difficult of course. I hope to be at goal in the next 3 months. We will see. It gets harder the closer we get to final goal.

115 pounds is incredible! Congrats!!! Are you still working down or on maintenance?

I am also using Dr. Hoehn and I have UHC. I just finished my 6 month diet on Feb. 17 and everything has been submitted to UHC so just waiting for them to stop driving me crazy with all this waiting and give me an answer..lol. It will depend on your health but the only thing Dr. Hoehn required me to do was a scope and psych eval. I initially chose Hoehn because UHC didn't cover St. Luke's cause I wanted to use Dr. Price as well just because a friend of mine used him and loved him. Then two months after I had started everything St. Lukes started taking UHC' date=' but I'm glad it worked out the way it did. I've met Dr. Hoehn a couple times already and he is always very attentive and most importantly non judgemental. I was frustrated at first when I found out about the 6 month diet, but now I'm glad I had to do it cause it gave me a chance to talk to a lot more people and do a lot more research. Hope it all works out for you and don't worry the 6 months goes by in no time!

I know this is an old thread and everyone is sleeved now. Just wondering if any of you are interested In a meeting? I would love to meet other sleevers and since I was sleeved in Mexico, I do not have a Dr. Or hospital sponsored support group. I live in Pleasant Hill.

We need to get our group back together in Lee's Summit or even somewhere else would be nice.

I would like this as well! I live in Cleveland, MO which is 30 min south of KC. I had my surgery down in Dallas, and so I too don't have any local support groups. I could use the extra support from fellow sleevers due to going through some very difficult things with work. It's scary how fast the weight can come back when I'm not staying focused!!!

Lee's Summit or preferably South KC would be best for me. I will do my best to join up if its not there. Evenings during the week are not good at least during the winter months.

I say, let's see how many people are interested, figure out where we all live and try to pick the most accessible location from there.

There's a group of us that have met at a coffee shop in Lee's Summit a couple of times and they have the Fit Frappe by Big Train. It tastes just like hot chocolate and now I make it at work all the time. It's my new favorite Protein Drink. I'm up for meeting anywhere in the area.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
