The story of an impatient chick in Kansas City

Recommended Posts

Wow! Hope you are able to work something out. After reading a lot of stories on here I realize how blessed I am to have such great insurance. i can't believe all the price quotes they gave you. What happened to all that "$11,999 sleeve special" they have posted on their website?

I'll bet that's just Dr. Hoehn's fee. Reading the small print probably reveals the true cost.

It's a mess, totally. And Jan didn't call me on Friday, so I still feel like it is all very much up in the air. I think Jan is out of the office this week as well (she said as much the only time we spoke) so I may not have a firm answer until next week. But I'm trying to stay positive and focus on my diet and hope for the best. It's amazing the kind of will-power I am finding with my diet, but it's only day three. hee hee :)

About the $11,999 or $16,500, it just isn't do-able for me right now. I'm happy there are those of you who can afford self-pay prices, but I don't have a prayer without insurance.

You still may want to check your options of offices even with insurance. You may find the different offices bill things differently and may have much less out of pocket from one as compared to another. It wouldn't hurt to check around by any means. New Hope has always been really quick to get back with me and get the answers for me I needed when I was initially trying to pursue insurance. Good luck with your journey and keep us posted on how this is all going for you.

Just going to share my experience with Jan and the people at his office. When I originally started searching for a surgeon, I contacted his office first. They led me on a wild goose chase for weeks, actually just over a month to be more precise. Let's just say Jan was LESS than helpful.... being evasive with her answers and to other questions passing me off to their case manager who never would respond to my questions.

Try asking them to provide you with an actual number of procedures Dr. Hoehn has done, what his complication rates are, and anything else specific to his practice...... You won't likely get any, or if you do the answers will be quite vague....

Getting answers like "within the national standards" is a non-answer in my book. I know he has many happy patients in the area, but so did my original Dr. from that same hospital and a few years later he was the subject of multiple medical malpractice suits. Just do a google search of Dr. Timothy Sifers and you will see for yourself.

My point is anytime an office can't / won't give me direct answers to simple questions that I have a right to know as a possible patient, it's time to move on (for me at least).

Keep following up with the insurance company regarding the 6 month waiting period. When I was looking to revise from the evil lap band to the sleeve, they had a 6 month diet and I found out they were getting rid of that requirement so I started the process after that. My first apt with the doctor was the last week of November 2010 and I was sleeved January 3, 2011!!!! GOOD LUCK :D

I'm with you Holiday I have no choice but to jump through insurance hoops rather than pay out of pocket. I am hopefully looking at being sleeved in early July 2011 and I officially started this process in August 2010. Oh well, I just keep telling myself that I've waisted far longer than a year on various diets in the past. And to be fair: my insurance only has 6 month of requirements....I spent Aug - Dec researching and waiting for my new insurance to take effect because my old insurance didn't cover WLS at all.

I will have to say that Jan does seem a little absent minded to me at times too. She literally emailed/called and asked me the same question 5 times. I also found that I got a faster response if I emailed her. I will also agree that when I asked questions she answered very vaguely. That being said I have met with Dr. Hoehn twice so far and I have nothing but good things to say about him. He was more attentive to me than my PCP. He didn't rush me by any means and he answered all my questions. I have also talked to numerous people who have been sleeved by him and at Heartland and not one person has had a negative comment about him as a Dr. As far as the insurance goes and finding out EXACTLY what the requirements are and what they are going to pay, I never got a definite answer til my hubby got on the phone with UHC and it only took him about 10 minutes to get a definite answer.

I did the email thing with Jan and others too, and had the same response as on the phone. What I did find is that he is best suited for first time WLS- not revisions and that is what I need. I had to get my information from outside his office since he has created an office that prevents penetrating that wall so difficult.

I still haven't heard anything back from Jan or anyone from Dr. Hoehn's office. Can someone give me Jan's email so that i can contact her and keep track of my attempts?

Thanks!

Good luck with that, I wouldn't hold my breath though. Jan won't answer emails she doesn't feel like, and evidently nobody else at the office cares either- including their practice manager. I found their whole office very unprofessional.

Hey there everyone.....

First off OP I am so sorry you are having such a difficult time and getting the run around. I have BCBSKC and my policy excludes bariatric surgery period. :( The Delf Pay cost is 11999. $7750 Goes to Heartland and the rest to Dr. Hoehn's Office. I do not have that kind of money and so I applied for a Medcal loan via their site. I basically took a car loan out n myself for 5 years. I pay $305 a month and paid $695 in closing costs. It was pretty easy. It is a simple interest loan with no prepayment penalties. It is the only way I could do it. (even this is stretching us a ton) I have a friend doing nutri system and it is $300 a month for food.

I went to the seminar at smmc for KC Bariatrcs in Jan. I had my first consult 2/16/11 and I was sleeved 3/9/11 by Dr. Hoehn at Hearland. I had nothing but good experiences. Dr. Hoehn was great as was Heartland.

Call and press zero. You will talk to Becky the receptionist who is really nice ask her to speak to Jan and tell her you have had a hard time connecting and if you can't get through to her call and talk to Wayne the Office Manager.

Anyway I would love a meet up!

I'm glad you had a good experience, but just an FYI - Wayne is even harder to reach than Jan and does NOT return emails either unless he wants to.

You are correct he did have a week where I got irritated and when I let Linda the nurse know I got a call asap. The best luck I have is talking to Becky and relling her and she usually can get them on the phone. Good Luck!

Thank you all for the info and tips. I'm going to call on Monday. Hopefully, Jan will be willing to go ahead and set up my initial consult.

Guess who called me today! Jan! I won't go into all the gory details except to ask, does she always sound so condescending? She didn't bring up our earlier conversation.

My appointment is April 11. That is all that matters, right? :)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
