Chai!!!

Recommended Posts

I love chai. But the stuff I can get at the store is sky-high in sugar and fat, and of course going someplace like Starbucks is just as bad or worse.

So, now I make my own. I have teabags of chai tea--zero calories. I have sugar-free flavorings (vanilla is what I put in my latest attempt--more zero calories). I use ground cinnamon and cloves just to add even more zip. I throw in Splenda to sweeten it as much or as little as I want. And for the creaminess, I use low-fat plain soy milk (50 calories for 8 ounces, 20 calories of which are fat). Also, this morning I iced it and threw in my morning Protein Powder, then whizzed it up until it was frothy and foamy. Oh. My. God. Talk about good!

Now my only problem is that I'm going to run out of tea bags, and I can't find the plain chai anywhere. Oh well. I'll find it somewhere. Eventually.

I use DaVinci's chai Syrup or Oregon Chai's sugar free chai (both available from netrition.com). I like the Davinci's better. I use skim milk, soy milk or silken tofu and Water for the milky part. I always add a scoop of Protein powder. It's very yummy.

I do this almost every morning! I brew my tea and add in two scoops of my vanilla Protein powder (mostly for extra calories since it's super low carb), a splash of milk and some spices. There are two or three varieties of plain chai tea at my local commissary, so I lucked out. If you have a Keurig, Gloria Jean's Chai Tea K-Cups work really well, too.

I do the same thing with coffee on the days I want a coffee. I blend it up with my Protein Powder, some milk and a splash of french vanilla Creamer.< /p>

It's a great way to boost my calories and Protein for the day. It's especially great because I find that I don't really feel like eating until after ten in the morning. Now I sip my "breakfast" and it's so much better!

If you search all of the stores in your area and still can't find any plain chai there are several options to buy in bulk from Amazon.com.< /p>

Try these teas....the "original" sweet and spicy is soooo awesome, no caffeine and no sugar/calories....doesn't need additional sweetener it is already sweet....they have them at costco and at the regular grocery store...

Good Earth Tea

Good Earth Tea

OMFG - I don't know what I would do without my Good Earth decaf!! It is seriously the most perfect blend ever - I wouldn't be surprised if humans have been drinking this perfect blend in some form or other since we first discovered spices!

As for the chai, I get a bag of chai powder from my local organic co-op, their own blend that they sell by weight. My Mom and I are total chai-heads and have discovered all sorts of ways to enjoy. The latest two are oat milk and greek yogurt. Oat milk is really good for you and interestingly tasty, and adding the chai powder or liquid to the greek yogurt - knock out!!!! If you're totally chai-crazed like my family, you can even bake it into Desserts. When I have a kitchen again I'm going to try worldaccordingtoeggface's Protein mini-muffins with chai mixed in, yumm.

We have many Indian markets around us... they all sell chai spices in a little box, just steep teabags, some spice mix to taste, splenda or stevia and milk in a pot with some boiling water.... delish!

So I woke up this morning craving chai. So I took one cup of 1% milk, added about 3/4 teaspoon of chai spice (from the Indian grocers) one packet of stevia and one good quality bag of Decaf tea. I heated them until steaming but not boiling...and let it steep for a couple of minutes. I mixed one scoop of soy isolate in 3/4 cup of cold Water until smooth. I then poured some of the tea mixture into the soy mixture, then all the soy mixture into the pot with the tea mixture. I stirred quickly over a low heat just to bring the temp up a bit without boiling. I can taste the soy a bit, but the chai spices and the sweetener and the milk really did the trick. YUM. experiment successfull :wink0:

milk 10 gms Protein

soy 11 gms protein

=21 gms protein!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
