Anyone had a problem getting as much time off as they want?

Hey all, this is my first post and I apoligize in advance if I am posting too much here at the beginning. I am so excited about my surgery!

I am planning on asking the doctor for about 6 to 8 weeks off. I want to have time to be able to "eat" at home and get used to it, as well as walking everyday. Has anyone else taken this much time or did anyone have a problem getting that much time off? Thanks!

I took a week off but I have a desk job and everyone is different. If you can aford it take a year off, i would.

Wow, that's a lot of time.... I bet if you do arrange for that much time off, you'll be calling work wanting to go back a lot sooner!

I made arrangements for two weeks off, just in case, but went back for two half-days at 10 and 11 days out, and my job is fairly physical (physical therapy), felt great and had no problems. I'd just make sure that it won't be a problem for you to go back early, cause seriously, you'll probably be bored, feeling great, and want to!

Luckily, I have supplemental insurance that will kick in in day 7 of my time-off and pay me my full salary. Otherwise, I would not even consider. I guess if I got bored, I could always go back to work early.

You might want to check with your supplemental insurance to see if they only pay for "disability period." You will not be disabled for 6-8 weeks and no ethical doctor would write you a note otherwise. My supplemental plans only pay if you are truly disabled in my experience as a HR/benefits person.

I'm a stay at home mom and about a week out. I used to work in a doctor's office. I can say honestly if I worked outside the home I would be ready to go back on Tuesday (after Labor Day holiday) without a doubt. That would be 12 days off total including the day of surgery. The main thing would be to avoid the others in the office who can eat "normal foods". I would want to murder them if a stressful day or a good meal came in.

My surgeon's office assumed because I work for the postal service I had a very strenuous job. Not true even though I am required to lift up tp 70 pounds if needed. I have never lifted more than probably 25 pounds in the 10 yrs. I have worked then. Anyway they filled out my FMLA papers out for 4 weeks off. No way in hell did I need that much time, but it was nice to know it was there if I needed it. I actually took 2 weeks off, but could have gone back after 1. If you can take that much time off and your surgeon OKs it, go for it!!!! :thumbup1:

I could see it if you work in a job that you dont have access to eat when you need to, that is the thing I am adjusting to at this point because when my stomach says eat...i better eat the hunger pains are stabbing. If you work at a factory job or somewhere that break and rest periods are not as reliable as they should be then I could see taking off that long to adjust and get body strong if not I would say 4 weeks would be a reasonable time off. Of course what your doctor is willing to do is between you and them. :thumbup1:

I was just wondering if you had laparscopic or open surgery for your gallbladder? I had mine out in Jan and it was outpatient and I was good in 3 days. 2 weeks seems like a long time. And if I had to be out 6 weeks I would go stir crazy!! lol

I took 1 1/2 weeks off, don't think i could have handled 6-8 weeks at home! Ugh that would have driven me to drink!:thumbup:

I was just gonna post about this today. I clean houses which is fairly physical, up and down stairs. I'm totally exausted when I get home. I'm taking 2 weeks off, I hope that's enough because I work for myself I really can't afford any longer.
