For those who have kids and can't get to a gym....check out

bodyforlife.com

I love the exercises and schedule they have. Bought my weights at Walmart, and exercise bench I use a stair step board. I have to get down on the floor and lie on it, but I can do those overhead presses just fine on it, as well as being able to use it for my legs as a step aerobic exercise. I have a treadmill and recumbant bike, and I just plug in my mp3 and listen to music to not get bored on them.

Hope my arms will start looking better, only got the OK to start this 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for posting this!

Resistance training is SO important for EVERYONE. Especially for WLS patients, where muscle wasting and loose skin are such an issue. And ladies, please don't fall into the trap of believing that weight lifting and resistance training will make you big and bulky -- it will not. You don't have the testosterone for it; your body just doesn't work that way. What it will do, like Ryansgirl, is tone you, lift what needs to be lifted, and make you look all over tighter and more put together.

EVERYONE should lift weights (if the doctor clears it). EVERYONE.

I've been doing all sorts of tri ceps work outs with weights and it does not seem to be helping. While I am doing the reps, I can see muscles but when I am done, all I see is flabby skin.

I've been working with weights since surgery and my thighs look great but I can't seem to build any muscle in my triceps.

Be sure you're working the whole arm consistently (with proper form) - not just the triceps. The muscles all tie together and support each other. For example, pushups work several parts of the arm and can be very effective if done correctly. I can't wait to get back in the gym!

OK...you also said get the right carb/protein/fat ratio. I'm curious....what would that be...is it like the Zone's 40/30/30 plan. I have the most energy when I eat like that...but have not been able to since this surgery.

I lift weights, and can see and feel the muscle, but the skin is droooppppiiinnnnggg.

Would like to hear the combo...sounds like you might be getting advice from a trainer. I can't afford one, so I exercise at home with my videos and weights, treadmill, and recumbant as well as the ball.

I've been using weights and all sorts of different routines on my arms with weights. I can see the muscle while doing the exercise, but when I am done, all I see is hanging skin. It's so ugly and I can't wear short sleeves at all. I have been doing weight routines for over 6 years. My thighs are great but you would never know that I do so much exercise with weights on my arms.

the zone diet didn't work for me. I work in a library so i read alot!!! oh did i mention my dad a 3 x ex body builder champion SO we do talk alot about fitness. really what works for one does not work for another and no i don't have a personal tranier. i just read and force myself in the gym 6 days a week. as far as carbs/protein/fat i had to find a balance for me and the smaller i get the more this does change as well. like i know after weight loss surgery people swear by low carb but that does not actully work for me high fat diets and Keto diets help me a lose a little but then i stop and feel crappy. and oregon that how i feel about my inner thighs at this point everything else is lifting and friming but the inside.

Nikki,

thanks for answering my questions... I've been dreading the batwing thing... I don't go to a gym and can't really afford it, but I would buy free weights at home to use.

Would you say that lower weights and higher reps is the way to get good results... another thing ... how heavy are you free weights? I was told to use 2lb ones and do a lot of reps... any advise as you are looking amazing!!

thanks

depends i do lighter weights i stared with 5 lbs now i do 7.5 for some and 10 lb for other. if your trying to build higher weights and slower reps are best tone lighter weight but faster reps. ive stuck with higher reps i can build muscle very easy so i stay far from heavy weights. so it dpends on what you are shooting for but i would start with something heavier then 2lbs weight you have to tierd those muscles outs. good luck! oh and do that cardio what good is it to lift weights but still have high body fat to cover it.

Thank you SO MUCH for this. It's been my biggest worry about after surgery and I can't even think of being able to afford another surgery. This lets me know here's hope. And I actually like lifting weights and going to the gym, so hopefully things will go smoothly for me as well.

You look great!

as most know ive have lost a lot of weigh thus far. 146 pounds to be exact. anyway when i got about 220 pounds my arms and thighs was not looking too hot and my arms bother me then anything. there was a lot of lose fat and i was dreading the fact that i may need more surgery and after the ordeal with my sleeve i was not looking forward to more surgery also who want to be stuck covering their arms all summer long. so 5 months ago today i decide to start lifting weights. an here are the results. i'm 176 pounds right now. as you can see the pics speak for it self. so i'm not stuck covering my arms this summer! now my thighs are another story but the are a lot smaller and i have lost 4 more inches off of them and there is a huge improvment to them (no i wont be posting my thighs at least not now lol) but they look fine in swiming boy shorts and to me that like wearing a two piece. so moral of the story is lift those weights.

1st pick was at 220 and plenty of sagging. 2nd pic is 4 months out. 3rd is a pic of my arms today at 176.:scared0:

xoxo,

nikki

excellent job Nikki! You have worked hard and it shows! keep it up

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
