Personal Goal vs. Surgeon's Goal/8 month update.

Recommended Posts

Hello Sleeve Friends!

I have been thinking a lot about my final goal weight lately as it gets a little closer every day. When I went in for all my pre-op stuff (that seems a lifetime ago), my surgeon came up with 209 for my goal weight. I'm 6'2" and have always been overweight, but I know the charts say I should be around 175. I don't want to get preoccupied with that number, so I changed my ticker goal back to my surgeon's goal today.

Now, when I look at myself in the mirror, I feel like I have way more than 40something pounds to lose, but I can't say that for sure. I am going to stick with my surgeon's goal of 209, and when I make it to that number, I will just see how I look and feel and go from there with a new goal if I still feel like I need to lose more.

That being said, I'm SO close to having 100 pounds off, I can taste it. Sunday will mark 8 months out for me and I'm hoping I can post some updated pics of me 100 pounds less than I was 8 months ago. I've been exercising enthusiastically (HA! I really am!) and as long as I exercise, I don't find I have to be so picky about how many carbs I have. That, to me, is worth it, so if exercise is what it takes for me to have a cracker or two, I'll keep doing it.

Maybe this is in the wrong forum, but today is one of those days when I feel like I'm a success...even with ???? more pounds to lose!

Congratulations!!!!!!! This is definitely the right forum to announce your terrific weight loss, exercise, and attitude victories.

I hemmed and hawed over my goal and ended up using one higher than my surgeon recommended. I still toy with the idea of getting to his (about 6 pounds from where I am today), but I'm really happy at this weight.

Good luck with the rest of your loss to -100 pounds. That's amazing!!!

You guys have all done really well. I am at 33 lbs. at one month. I have had a stall of almost two weeks and was really getting worried. The only thing that kept me from despair was hearing from others that the stall usually happens at this point. The two of you give me hope that a few months from now I will be where you are.:thumbup1:

Thanks y'all! I've only had that one pity party a few weeks ago, and once I got off my butt and started working out, I was over it!

I think the charts are for those imancipated runway models. . hehehe. . .i'm supposed to weigh 170 at 6'0, but i feel and look good at my now weight whatever it is, (I weigh in on Tuesday, will let y'all know) so my thing is if i lose more good, if not then good. . whatever. . . i'm doing everything right, eating right, drinking fluids (yahoo, i'm up to drinking 77 - 80 oz's per day) love drinking stuff again. . . i'm hyper now and can't sit still, so the exercise isn't a problem either. . . good luck to you Ash, you are doing great and remember you see yourself every day, it's the compliments from others that count. . . my coworkers call me "Noodle" now . . i think it's great!:thumbup1:

The first number the surgeon threw my way was 180-something... fully thirty pounds higher than what would put me at a healthy BMI (which he then told me he'd rather see me at). I think since the percentage of weight lost to be considered "successful" is only like 60% of extra weight or something like that, that's the first number they look at. I wouldn't sweat that number too much, you'll know what's right for you when you get there. :001_smile:

Personally, I think the ideal range, which is developed statistically IS what is healthiest and suits most people. I think those that have been very overweight for long periods of time simply cant imagine themselves that thin and imagine they will look sick or emaciated. That's rarely the case. I have a BMI of 21 and I look perfectly normal.

I know how you feel when it comes to setting a goal. I set mine at 150, then after I had my revision done I changed it to 140. With all that said now that I'm almost to 150 I think 140 will be too little. Give yourself some time and you will know when it is right to stop.

Good luck and happy losing!

I finally made it to 100 today! My official weigh-in is on Mondays, but I have weighed every day since my surgery. It keeps me honest.

I'm 100% positive I'll change my goal once I get to my surgeon's goal, but my surgeon's goal seems a whole lot closer than the chart! So, I'm sticking with that for now. Will post pics Monday if I get a chance. :)

Congratulations on making it to 100!! That is an amazing task that you have accomplished. Bravo!!

My surgeon gave me a goal of getting to a BMI of 30. He said that at my age that would be perfect and he would consider the surgery a huge success. He said that a BMI of 25 would be phenomenal. I want to lose 100 pounds just because I would consider that an amazing accomplishment.

Hmmm ... don't know quite how to say this but I think goals are like making New Years Resolutions ..... they tend to set you up for failure.

I know my only goal is to be at a healthy weight (not some book suggestion weight) and to live a more active life (well as active as you can be with a fused leg, osteo and rhumatioid arthritis and coronary artery disease)! Who said life is better after 60 :tongue_smilie:

You are doing just great ... can't wait for the day that I'll be on the losers bench and giving my report. I don't have to worry about buying new clothes as I'm a Benedictine Monk and wear a habit ... I'll just have to take them in.

Keep up the good work.

John

CONGRATS!!!! That is so awesome! I'm addicted to weighing myself too, every morning like clock work!! The goal thing for me has changed many times, I just want to be healthy and give myself just a little regain room LOL. Can't wait to see your pictures, I need to get busy and post some too.

Have a great rest of the weekend!

I have to agree with you on the goal thing, it is something that changes a lot. My "goal" now is to get down just 10 more lbs and stay there. I will be at the size I want and will be at a healthy BMI, so that is all I want.

Too bad you don't get to have a shopping spree when you have your weight off!! I have not enjoyed shopping for many years but love it again now!!

Good luck, Bernadette

You are tall too right? And you run about every day too? My BMI is at 24 right now, but I would like to be at 21-22, if I lose 10 more lbs I will be there. I have seen pictures of you, and I think you look great!! It is difficult for us when we start this journey to imagine being thin again. I never thought I would be a size 10 again, but that is where I'm at right now, I was to end up at an 8. Just a few more pounds and I will be there.

Congrats on doing so well!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
