What exercise do you do at home?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, thanks so much....I do currently exercise (pre-band). I have to or could not move! Arthritis. We have a treadmill and a bike in basement, and a cousin who comes over 3-4 times a week in the AM. We switch off 15 mins on each for 60 mins total, try to keep the treadmill on incline. What I don't currently have is the LOVE of exercise. I think that's because despite regular 60-minute workouts at least 3-4 times a week for years and years (sometimes 5-6 times a week) I don't see an ounce of weight loss. Not to mention all the dieting, etc. It's mind-boggling, really. Plus we live on 16 acres and I work outdoors a lot. But that's why we're here, right? The traditional diet and exercise formula just doesn't work for some -- certainly not for me. I'm wondering if there are specific kinds of exercise recommended for Bandsters and for what reason -- like building muscle underneath the fat so when it sheds there is muscle there, something to do with the skin not being so loose later, or just the regular cardio benefits and increased weight loss. I can't wait to get my band! Thanks again for chiming in and good luck every one with their exercise routines. We have a very underutilized Bowflex but I don't do much with it besides pull-downs and the calf lifting up thing for the knees. Might be good to explore the many things that can be done with that. Can't wait to lose some weight and have more flexibility, energy and the VERVE -- the get-up-and-go -- the excitement that comes from a program that is working. So defeating to do it with little result day after day.....that's just not fun.

I have done Tai-Chi it looks like it would be so easy but it is a lot tougher than I thought it would be. I feel so awake and relaxed at the same time when I'm done. We also have a treadmill and stationary bike.

Hi there' date=' can you elaborate? I am hoping to replace food thoughts with exercise and just looking for all the inspiration I can get (still pre-band but I think it won't be long now).....right now I kind of dread exercise but I do it -- want to WANT it![/quote']

Bandista, I just meant that I could have lost more rapidly if I had hit the exercise routine right out of the gate. There is a certain sweet spot, I believe, early in the banded life where weight seems to come off more quickly and the motivation is high. I am about two years out from my surgery, still could lose possibly 10 or 20 more pounds (although I am 5 below my orriginal goal!)

I did exercise at the very beginning, but just barely, and looking back, I would have been at goal much sooner. I have no regrets, mind you, I just think exercise from day one (as recommended by most surgeons) is very good advice and worth the effort.

I'm using this site: work out at home

My favourite exercises are mountain climbers, glutes bridges, squats, planks and some exercises I can do with a towel e.g. seated rows and sliding leg curls on the floor. And I'm working out with dumbbells at home. Biceps curls and triceps extensions are good strength exercises.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
