Why no fruits?

Recommended Posts

My doc said to avoid fruits in the first 4 weeks after surgery and then after I can have berries. I know fruit can be high in sugar I get why only berries but why can't I have berries now? I'm dying for a smoothie from tropical smoothie and I can add weigh and get sugar free. I can't stand these Protein Shakes anymore and while I can eat mushie foods I just really want something refreshing like that. I'm 7 days post op.

For me fruit goes down VERY slowly because of the consistency. It's filled with so much Water that it's almost like eating and drinking at the same time depending on the fruit. Something that is heavy like meat, cheese, eggs, etc. all tend to drop right through the stoma stretching it just enough. Fruit however, can sometimes almost 'float' slowly down and even be uncomfortable at times.

The reason he is withholding fruit for the first month is because they are high in acidity. Bandsters are prone to GERD/reflux, especially immediately after surgery because the stomach is already acidic due to the lack of solids. it's a good idea to avoid the fruits for now. It's also important to remember that if you start to develop GERD like symptoms to avoid other foods/drinks that increase acidity (so remember our fruit conversation, but things like coffee and alcohol are also culprits). Once you are past the first month, experiment because some fruits can be hard to eat. Fibrous ones are the most difficult (ie oranges).

And the fruit skins if not peeled (apples) tends to pulp up above the band opening and stay for long periodss before dropping further into the stomach. This prevents you from eating the good foods and getting the nutrients needed.

Besides healing from surgery, fruit is a complex carb. Yes, it's good for you, but it's a carb. Eat more Protein and veggies.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
