Pre-Op Diet for June 10th Surgery

Recommended Posts

I did it today. Today was my surgery date.

I'm in a lot of pain w nausea and I was dry heaving earlier. So I am staying overnight. Walking feels good but it makes me lightheaded and nauseated but I'm starting to feel better.

Would I do it again? Ask me in a week.

But I am glad it's over and I'm starting the next best journey of my life

I'll wait to ask you in a few months. You have a lot of stages and learning curve to go through. This is your journey. Embrace each part of it. You'll do great!

I'm feeling so much better today. I'm sore but I don't feel like I did yesterday. I'm having the best Breakfast of beef broth, Popsicles, jello!! The Popsicles is the most most most amazing thing. Moving helps you burp and pass gas which makes you feel way better too!

Hey Lisa, I'll be honest with you, it hurts like hell!! But I have no regrets. Today I'm feeling better and I'm still glad I did it. I had to, otherwise I was afraid I was going to kill myself with my weight.

Some have the surgery and have no problems, I just had severe nausea with the gas. Moving and walking helps helps HELPS!

DON'T let my post scare you! I regret nothing! I'm just a big old baby sometimes when it comes to pain.

Add me as a friend :) we can so this together :)

Hi all! Well I'm feeling a bit better to write about my surgery on Monday, June 10th. I'm Banded!

I arrived at the hospital and all went smoothly. When they wheeled me into the operating room the anesthesiologist said, "I'm giving you something to relax. 10 seconds later, lights out. Next thing I know, I'm waking up in recovery. At first I felt a nauseous, but the nurse gave me something in the I.V. line, and it quickly went away. I also had some pain in my left shoulder from the gas. Ice chips were heaven at that time too. After I felt a bit better and clear headed, they sent me home.

The Doctor told my wife all went smoothly. He repaired my Hiatal hernia, great! He also repaired a Umbilical hernia.

After getting home I felt sore, but took my pain meds. Sipping on Gatorade G2 and Water.< /p>

Now the incisions for the lap band were sore, but manageable, not so bad for what it is.

I went to sleep and woke up several times to visit the restroom, due to all the liquids I've been sipping.

Getting in and out of bed is tough. Nice to have someone help you, or a good plan to easily do it.

Now let me tell you, the next morning I woke up and I felt like a truck ran over my lower abdomen..

The umbilical hernia is REALLY sore. I felt like someone had taken a few swings with a baseball bat to my lower abdomen!

I guess they use very strong sutures for that; makes sense. Apart from the abdominal hernia repair pain, I have some gas pain, but it seems to be dissipating quickly. I felt gas pains in my left shoulder and left lower rib area. Not fun, but it is what it is. You have to ride it out with gas-x strips and lots of walking around the house. I'm holding a pillow against my stomach area, while walking. Why? I feels good, and is just comforting to have a pillow :) . My throat is sore from the anesthesia, but it's normal. sugar free popsicles are great. I've been sipping on Sobe zero calorie lifewater, chicken broth and water. So, if it wasn't for the hernia repair, I would say the pain is very manageable.

I can feel where my port is located, which is a new curiosity to me. Otherwise, so far I can't tell if I have any restriction, and have no plans on testing it. I just sip, walk and relax. I've spoken with the nurse at the doctors office and double checked that I can start on creamy Soups tomorrow. But I'll take it easy no matter what, I'm not hungry whatsoever, so no hurry to get there. Hope everyone else had a good experiences. Thanks to all of you for being here! I update how the next few days go.

Time4kim, it went pretty well. I'm doing fine, just a little sore. Gas pain but nothing crazy, my stomach is just gurgling like crazy. I feel good overall though. I'm ready to get out of the house, and I miss rough housing with my 2 1/2 year old.

Thanks for the reports ArtM and Big Tex. I hope you are both up and around in no time. I go tomorrow, and I'm starting to get nervous. I've never had any surgery. My only hospital stays were when I gave birth to my children, but I don't think that's comparable to being put under :-) I'll keep you posted!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
