Did anyone have a problem with pop/soda?

Recommended Posts

I am very nervous about my pop/ soda habit. I currently drink at least 1 liter of soda a day. Its Diet Dr Pepper. I also love my coffee with French vanilla International Delight Creamer. Funny now that this is becoming real that I'm more worried about what I drink than what I eat??

I haven't touched any carbonation since being banded 14 months ago. It's just not worth the risk of a slip so I gave it up when I had the surgery. When I was in the hospital having my Lap Band surgery, my roommate was in having her band replaced. Her band not only slipped but her stomach prolapsed up through her band- and it was caused by her drinking soda. She also regained 40 pounds. You couldn't pay me to drink carbonation since being banded, I don't ever want to go through what that woman did.

As far as coffee, they make some really good sugar free and low calorie coffee Creamers. I still have a high calorie coffee drink once in awhile as a treat but when I do I am sure to count it in my daily calories.

I can't believe they have not told you no carbonated beverages. My surgeon says absolutely no carbontion. Also no liquid calories. Any liquids with more then 10 calories per serving I am not suppose to have.

My doctor did tell me no more carbonated drinks. I haven't been banded yet so I'm nervous about giving them up. After hearing about trouble after surgery...I think it will make it a lot easier.

It's a hard habit to break, but you can do it. At first it is so hard, but it gets easier. I used to drink diet soda daily, now the only time I crave it is at a restaurant and I am easily able to pass it up. I drank soda up until my pre op diet. It was too hard to give up until the reality of damaging the band came true.

I agree with the above poster about the coffee add ins. There are so many that are ok to have. I try to stay sugar free. I also count my blessings and look at the bright side and say at least I can still drink coffee.

Good luck. You can do it.

they told me since day one not to drink soda because of the bubbles I defeats the purpose the surgery the bubbles will introduce air in your stomach causing it to expand and feel uncomfortable.. plus the sugar would still be bad... I been working on getting coke out of my life and I do admit its hard very hard... switch to Snapple or something you like,,, like tea. with sweetnlow... my surgery is the 19th so I prepared 7 months ago... =)

That's definitely a thought. I can't decide if I should just go hog wild until my surgery date ( I go to Hawaii soon and literally as soon as I'm home I go on my liquid diet) or if I should start cutting things out now. What are everyone's thoughts on this?

I started cutting it out ahead of time. First, I switched to diet (I drank regular). Then, I switched to diet caffeine free (because I knew I'd have withdrawals). Then, I slowly phased it out entirely. For me, it worked. I knew I couldn't just go cold turkey on all that sugar, caffeine, and carbonation all at one time.

It's weird, but I honestly don't even miss it now. I drink a lot of Water and when I feel like I want something sweet to drink, I drink Lipton Diet Green Tea, in either mixed berry or citrus flavor. It's really good, zero calories, and no carbonation.

I was also freaked out about this. I was a Dt. Dew freak, loved the stuff. The hubs and I went through 2 cases a week. I started cutting back about a month before surgery. My NUT also told me to cut back on my sweet tea, which I also main lined. I use to drink 2-3 glasses of sweet tea when eating dinner. So all the drinking stuff- no carbination, cutting back on sweet tea, not drinking and eating had me really worried.

Honestly, I handled it far better than I ever believed I could. I tried a swallow of my hubs diet due a few months ago, it was like drinking acid. The carbonation burned like drinking straight liquor. I made a gallon of sweet tea for a dinner with friends one night, I ended up pouring what was left out because we just don't drink it anymore. I drink ice Water plain or with crystal light peach mango green tea mixed in it. I honestly don't want anything else. I also didn't have any issue to stopping the drinking with eating.

You will be fine, just don't stress about it to much. Try to cut it down little bit by little bit over the time before surgery.

If it is the taste you love, my surgeon did say that you could have Diet soda if you left it out long enough for it to go flat. No carbonation left in it = no problem. However, i think flat pop is gross so its not worth it to me, but everyone is different.

I was very addicted to diet coke's, I gave them up 3 months before surgery and yes it was hard. After surgery I still had some cravings for soda and I would occassionally allow them to go flat and try to drink them but it defeats the purpose and tast of a good soda. I have tasted carbonated beverages and they do make you burp, and cause you to be very gasey and my band is just not work the potenital harm carbonation can cause. On the international coffee stuff, look for SF and FF. If you use it occassionally as a treat than it should not be a problem. While trying to loose weight I was very strict with my diet, since reaching goal I do allow myself occassional indulgence in coffee;s treats etc but I am very careful and count the calories/ Good luck to you on your journey.

I am also a coke addict (coke zero). I gave it up the day of surgery. I thought it is going to be too hard to quit that but I was surprised it wasn't.

I think it is best to give it up now. After surgery you have so many other restrictions that one more will be even harder. I have it up a month before surgery so that I was over that hurdle. It is all about getting healthy and eating better and Soda definately has no good nutrition in it and can be a Detour for weight loss. I found that those drops you put in Water really helped and Vitamin waters. Good Luck, have fun in Hawaii but realize the more you have to give up after surgery the harder it is to stick to it.

I was a 20 year Coke addict, drinking at least 2 per day. My doctor prescribed Topamax to get me off the Cokes and it also helps with caffeine headaches. I did not once have a headache and the medication makes Coke taste terrible. I was able to quit cold turkey and have never gone back. I only took the Topamax for about 2 weeks.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
