Any had surgery with US Bariatrics, Dr Kim? I can't have my first fill until July 13th YIKES....It because I'm going on vacation, which I really shouldn't be doing as I have all these medical bills. But, I guess I'm not spending money on eating out so ALLS GOOD LOL. Any live in Seminole County???

Hi! I live in St. CLoud and I work downtown Orlando. I plan on having Dr. Kim at US Bariatrics do my surgey. I just have to get Cigna to accept him as a provider which is hard. Cigna wants me to go to Dr. Jawad in Ocala but I don't want to. When I called them, the lady that answered the phone asked me about my weight. I told her and she said because my BMI is over 50, Dr. Jawad would want to do gastric and probably wouldn't do the band. I don't like being told that by the person that answers the phone there. I think it sounds like Dr. Jawad is out to make more money because he charges more for gastric. I am praying Cigna will see that US Bariatric is about 50 miles closer to where I live. Right now I am in month 5 of my 6-month diet program so I am just waiting to send all of my paperwork once that's over. Keeping my fingers crossed that they will approve me!

I have Aetna, Dr Kim wasn't on their list either. So its was about $4,000 out of pocket. Cigna should still pay 70% for Dr Kim. Have you gone to any of his meetings? Or you can call his office staff 407-303-4521 ask for Amanda Scott she works with all the insurance companies. All other docs should be in network, Florida Hospital, RLI anesthisists. good luck!

Hi JC - I'm impatiently waiting! I hope after coughing up all this dough that I lose the weight, or at least most of it. Any suggestions? I'll be perfectly honest, I plan on excersizing, but, I am a procrastinator. I hope when I lose some lbs. that I have more energy and incintive to excercise more. I want to lose 70 lbs but will be very happy with 55.

I can give you lots of suggestions most revolve around a single theme called patience which I unfortunatly have very little.

Here are my top five:

1. Try to find a diet, eating plan, lifestyle change, whatever you want to call it (diet for me ) that works for you. I use a Weight Watchers type of diet.

2. Excercise will come with the extra energy if you desire it. I started out huffing and puffing around the JR. High School track.

3. Set goals short med long. one of mine was to walk 4miles in an hour I started with making it around the track then 1 mile then 2 ... after I reached 4 then I started working on speed.

Now I walk 4 for a warm up, Can bike 100 miles in about 9hours, Kayak indefinetly. I think my metabolism is one fire!

4.Get used to putting more fluids in your body this is key for me. It helps keep me out of trouble I tend not to get as hungry when I am more hydrated.

5. Keep a positive attitude! If people around you are bombing you with negativity get away from them. If you start having self-doubt because something isn't working right hit these groups and call on your Dr. but don't give in to negative thoughts. Let us vetrans and your Dr. try to help before giving in! Did I mention stay positive?

Hi! Yes, I have been to two of his meetings. I don't mind paying some out of pocket as long as Cigna pays the rest! I have spoken to Amanda alot and she has given me alot of advice on how to get Cigna to approve me. You see, Cigna is stuck on this Dr. Jawad in Ocala. He has an after-care center in Orlando and they think he does the surgery there too. I am trying to get them to realize that he is actually outside of the zone for me. I would have to drive 2 hours to get to him. Amanda has had some good suggestions on how to get Cigna to approve me for US Bariatrics. I am praying they will because I like Dr. Kim and they are only about 30 minutes from my house. I am glad to hear all of the other docs there should take my insurance. Thanks for the note!

Hey! I know Jacksonville is not Central Florida, but I was hoping that I could find someone in Jacksonville banded by Dr. Chappano and ask them a few questions. Thanks, Christi

Just wanted to introduce myself. Central Florida here, banded in December in Mexico (Dr. Rumbaut). Not exactly where I want to be weight-wise but it's entirely my fault. I'm refocused and rededicated now so I hope to see the lbs start coming off again.

:D

Hi JC. Thanks for remembering. The patient Coordinator says I only need one day of liquids before surgery since I have a bmi under 35.

I'm getting very nervous and hoping I'm making the right decision. I knew for a fact this is what I wanted up to this point. I guess I've just got the jitters.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play, and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
