? On Carb Amounts Post Band

Recommended Posts

So I was banded 10/01 and since 10/11 I haven't lost a single #. I've been on mushie/soft foods since the 14th. I know when the dietitian was talking to me about Protein Drinks she said it should have 20gm of Protein and no more than 5gm of carbs (I think). Is there a carb limit we should stick to after banding?? I'm thinking I'm taking in either too many carbs or calories. I take in about 1000 to 1200 calories a day. I'm getting the required 65-75 gms of protein a day and the 64 oz of water/liquid. Just trying to figure out why the weight-loss has stalled. I lost 20.2# in the 2 weeks from pre-surgery liquid to post surgery followup.

I dont eat any carbs except veggies. I dont know what the ratio of carbs should be. Eating starchy carbs just makes me feel bad so I sta away from them except for a few crackers now and then with some laughing cow cinnamon cheese spread on it. But then I use the pretzel crisps but I really dont know about the carbs. I try to eat more Protein then carbs so it will burn the fat.

There is no "rule" that with the band you have to restrict carbs. If your doctor or nutritionist advises it, by all means, do as they say being as they're the experts.

However, not all of us do low carb. I don't restrict carbs. I count calories, restrict fat intake, and make sure to get in all my Protein. But I do not limit carbs. It's simply not realistic for me so I stick to a plan that is.

My NUT says only eat when hungry and just eat healthy, 3 oz Protein, veg, and good carb. No counting anything. I do count calories and eat between 500-600 per day and exercise at least an hour each day. Talk to you NUT,they know your body.

Ditto but I was finding I had to increase my food intake as I wasn't eating enough and my losses stalled, since upping my calories I'm loosing nicely again.

I agree with Missy! I do not restrict carbs...nor does my doc say too...Every "body" is different, and what works for one person, may not work so well for another.

My mother is a low carb crazeee! Heee! It works to restrict carbs for her...not for me. I lose and have lost much more weight watching my calories rather than sticking to a strict low carb diet. I do as Missy and watch my carb intake...but that doesn't mean I don't eat a potato now and then.

To me, it all about eating balanced.

Agree with both of you! When you have a stall, and you will, you sometimes have to change things up. Sometimes you have to eat more for a couple days, or try changing the type and length of exercise you do. Even when you do this, it may take a while and you are building muscles as you change up your exercise up. Experiment, but keep charging forward!

I find I don't loose weight unless I eat low-carb, even if I just stick to "good carbs" my weight loss stalls. Also I have diebeties, another reason to restrict carbs. I was able to get off my blood sugar medication. I stick to high protien such as fish, chicken, eggs, eat non-starchy veggies, snack on nuts and cheese and have the occassional LC protien shake. I agree with what was said, everybodies body is different, find what works for you.

I count calories each day and stay around 1200, look at food intake of carbs and sugars.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
