Recommended Posts

Hello everyone I am 9 days post op, and i just started my "mushy" phase, but I am afraid I am not getting enough protein..I simply can not tolerate the tase of Protein shakes...I just got a new one in the mail this morning that i ordered from GNC, It's called VPX zero carb vanilla, so we'll see how that one taste, if not i'll return it...my question is....how is everyone mixing their Protein Shakes? ? with Water, milk ice? I need some tips on how to tolerate a protein shake..i know it sounds crazy but one serving of this Protein Shake is like 20g of protein I need that!!!! help me!!!!! haha

I feel for you, I went through the same thing. I tried 3 or 4 different Protein shakes before I found one that I actually liked. (some were seriously awful! lol)

I really like unjury, I'm 9 months post op and still have a chocolate Splendor Unjury shake for Breakfast every morning.

Hi there!

girl I can't stand Protein Shakes either and i'm six weks post- op. However i'm doing this 30 day challenge that requires me to drink Protein shakes almost every day at least 2 times a day. I had a vanilla from GNC also woemens ultra mega active something something. I hate vanilla beyond believe, but think I bought it because I was sick of the chocolate one hahahaha!! Anyway I did some research and all the reviews pointed out to the Jay Robbs protein shakes as the best tasting ones. I just bought the strawberry one and let me tell you it's not half bad I actually like it =) and i'm taking it rigth now the Protein Shake mixed and blended with maplebrownsugar ( weight control packet) oeatmeal I forgot to put some ice but it's still not bad =) if you keep the vanilla put some coffee ( well maybe for you Decaf would be better), ice, and two packets of splenda I promise it will taste better =)

I've found that mixing the Protein powder with a cup of 1% milk, then adding 1 or 2 ice cubes to the blender for mixing makes the shake ticker and helps it taste better. I use the GNC Wheybolic Extreme; when mixed with milk, 1.5 scoops will give you 37g of protein.

I never thought that mixing the Protein Powder with plain Water tasted very good...It will help to experiment with different products to discover one you like. For me, using the milk helps me get the Calcium and protein I need if I'm not able to meet my daily protein goal with my meals alone.

I am another unjury fan. I do the vanilla, mix with 1 c trop 50 oj and a couple of frozen strawberries. Or vanilla, 1 Tbsp s/f pistachio pudding mix, 1 c skim milk. Or the chocolate splendor, 1 c skim milk and a couple ice cubes.

Unjury is only online- unjury.com, and they have a sample packet you can order with 2 vanilla, 2 chocolate splendor, 2 strawberry, 2 chicken broth (which I LOVE, tastes like Lipton to me) and 2 unflavored to try.

Good luck!!

I couldn't drink the ready made Protein drinks either. In fact, the only thing that saved me early on after surgery was 'UNFLAVORED Protein Powder" I would mix that in my chicken broth mostly, Soups, and add it in to my mushy foods. Once I started on solids I completely stopped using protein in my drinks and food. I get all my protein from foods now, "my" surgeon said to me yesterday that is the whole point is to get off the dependency of protein powders and drinks and get protein from 'real' food.< /p>

Unflavored protein powder can also be used in making your own shakes. Fresh fruit, skim milk, and ice cubes with added unflavored protein powder. You will really have to keep experimenting...

Have you tried Carnation Instant Breakfast - sugar free packets or ready made bottles? The ready made ones taste like chocolate milk. Best of luck!

Part of my bandster life has been to get in the habit of reading nutrition labels. If you read the amount of Protein in the Carnation product, it is lacking significantly in the type of Protein bariatric patients need...whey isolate.

whey isolate is considered to be the "gold standard" for bariatric patients, a complete protein, and has all of the amino acids needed for proper bariatric nutrition.

My surgeon advised that the minimum amount of protein every shake should have is 20g.

I can't do many Protein drinks either, carnation instant bfast - I had one, threw the other 3 away, returned stuff to GNC and gave away 2 big tubs of Protein powder. I was on Optifast for my pre op diet and have returned to those when I need a protein boost.

In the mushy phase, I would add blenderized cottage cheese to my Soups for extra protein.......it gives it a good boost and nice flavor.

Right now I am trying to eat my protein and with my Optifast as my back up I am okay, but I do feel for you. I spent a fortune on trying to find the right Protein Drink - no luck. At least with GNC, you can return it if you don't like it.

I have read that your body can only absorb around 25 grams of Protein in one sitting. I bought some whey Protein Powder and intended to mix with one cup of skim milk. The powder has 30 grams per scoop, plus the skim milk added another 6 grams. I ended up using 2/3 cup of powder. My understanding is that anything over 25 grams will simply get flushed out and not absorbed.

I am with ya girl! I hate them. I used unjury unflavored and added that to almost everything especially during mushies (apple sauce, mashed potatos, soup). That got me through until I could eat other Protein things.

Not sure what your nutritionist recommended, but I ate a lot of soft fish even during the mushy time becuase it was already mush. If you want to do the Protein shake use a base shake and add fruit in the blender like banana, peach, apple sauce - also you can add yogurt.

Good luck on your Protein Quest.

first how tight is your band? I could not swallow those things. So i just used other forms of protien. I had very little restriction at first, so I was lucky. I ate lots of smoothies made with greek yougart with splenda I actually found a non flavored whey powder i mixed into smoothies. when i started on mushy which I didnt really wait on but a week or so....I pureed Soups with Fiber and protien counts. Just experiment. ensure now makes a protien flavored drink that are fruity and special k makes a protien Water. hope it helps

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
