Pissed Off! Need Somebody To Talk Me Down...

Recommended Posts

Hey all -

I am getting extremely irritated with my weight loss progress or lack there of. I chatted about a month ago about how I had my surgery about 3 years ago and then my insurance ran out before I could get to the "green zone" fill level. In fact - I felt hardly any restriction. needless to say I gained all the weight I had lost back.

Anyway - I started going back to my WL surgeon August 20th, 2012 and had lost 20 lbs by the end of September 2012. However, as of this morning, I have gained 3 lbs! It doesn't sound like a lot but it's frustrating to gain weight when I've been eating the right things, eating way less, and excersising 3 times a week. I shouldn't be GAINING anything.

I'm getting frustrated. I'm at that point where I say "if i'm gaining weight eating like a vegan and excersising, then what's the point? Where's the nearest burger?!".

I need some encouragement.

PS - I use the Lose It weight loss website/phone app to log my calories, fat, and sodium nutrients as well as my excersises.

Your weight can, and will, fluctuate greatly from day to day. For instance, Water retention. If you've had more sodium than usual, you could be retaining considerable Water weight. Muscle is more dense per inch than muscle thus weighs more. If you're building muscle, you could gain a couple pounds despite losing inches.

Honestly, I know it's frustrating. When my weight does a random fluctuate I usually stand on the scale going "WTH just happened?" But if I just give it a couple days, that random weight fluctuation resolves itself and takes a pound or two with it.

Hang in there, you're definitely back on the right track.

I agree with Missy. My weight fluctuates 3-4 pounds everyday. It's usually due to Water retention. That is why I am trying to get away from weighing everyday. It isn't a good measure of weight loss. Once a week is plenty. However, it usually does correct itself. You can help by drinking lots of Water and keep up with the exercising. That will help you body let go of the excess water.

Also, 20 pounds in 1 month is AMAZING!! You should be proud of that!! Your body is basically a machine and sometimes, it has to recalibrate itself. So, after loosing that much weight, your body is rebooting and moving stuff around. That can cause a temporary weight gain. I seriously doubt you gained 3 pounds of fat. It's probably just your body readjusting. Mine has done it numerous times throughout my weight loss. I will gain 5 pounds one week and the next, it's all gone plus 2 pounds. It's completely normal and nothing to fret over. Just keep doing what you are doing and it will correct itself.

Again, big congrats on getting back on track and with the 20 pounds. It makes my little 5 pound/month weight loss seem petty. LOL Best of luck to you!!

Missy is right. My weight goes down Saturday through Tuesday and then on Wed, Thurs, Fri, it goes up even though everything stays the same. Go figure our bodies sometimes have a mind of their own. If the 3 extra pounds hang around for more than a week and brings friends then you need to look closer at things, but there is no need to freak out at this point.

Don't let this get you down!

I know the feeling, it truly makes you wanna skip the whole process, but when you think about light at the end of the tunnel you're reminded why you started this journey in the first place. I can go on and on about Water weight, muscle vs. fat to explain the weight gain and as logical as it is it doesn't make you or any of us feel any better when the numbers on the scale go UP.

A week and a half go, I got on the scale, log my weight, had my band adjusted ate properly, exercised 3 days out of 7, got back on the scale the following week and had gained 10 freaking pounds. So trust me when I say, I feel your pain. I encourage you to hang in there, keep your head up and keep doing the right thing and it'll all pay off in the end.

Oh that vicious scale! It can cause such trama. I try to only step on the scale once a week (not always good at that). The other thing I do is take my measurements the 1st of every month. I am loosing inches, clothes are looser, etc.

So, put your scale away and only take it out occationally. If it is sitting on the floor in your bathroom you will step on it every day.

Good luck.

Yes, the scale is frustrating at times...and as others have mentioned it is normal to have small fluctuations in weight. The key is to not loose your focus and determination to remain compliant with your bandster diet. Over time, you will see the results you want.

I've often written on this forum that this journey has taught me a life skill which long eluded me...patience. Our society conditions us to want everything "yesterday"...when that's just not realistic with weight loss. You likely did not gain the weight you want to loose rapidly, and it will not be lost rapidly. Slow and steady is the healthier approach.

Stay the course, and you will see the results you want. And it's true...weighing in too often does tend to create unnecessary negative feelings, so avoid becoming obsessed with your scale.< /span>

Check out www.shrinkyourself.com. It's an online program that teaches you WHY you eat emotionally and HOW to stop it. It's 12 weeks so no overnight success. I'm on my first week of it and won't be banded until December so you can discount this input if you like. But it may be worth a shot! Check it out!

I can gain 4 pounds overnight, especially when my sodium intake is high. I'm sure that gain is frustrating for you, especially considering the fact that you were without insurance coverage for so, but in the long term, 3 pounds up or down is not medically significant. I think it's way too soon to jump off a bridge over it. Hang in there, keep doing what you're doing, and if your weight isn't down in another month, go back to see your surgeon.

P.S. - if you're exercising regularly, that 3 lbs could represent muscle, and since muscle burns calories faster than fatty tissue, a 3 lb gain is actually good news.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
