October 22 Surgery Date!

Recommended Posts

Yikes! This is getting really real! Today I went to a support group at NYU and met a bunch of awesome people who have lost tons of weight. They were really an inspiration and even the ones who were not losing as much as they would like or who were struggling to eat well all agreed it was the best thing they ever did. Are there any other october bandsters out there? I'm going to need you guys to get me through this. Let's do this together! Come on, don't make me hang out with the sept banisters! Post, my soon to be skinny sisters and brothers! I want to meet you!

It's good to hear successful stories of any degree. I have a surgery date of October 2nd. I'm also getting nervous. Ready to get it over with. Finished my preoperative testing today. Good luck to you.

I am scheduled for Oct 5th. This is getting very real for me as well. I'm torn between being excited & nervous. So ready to have some time off from work & get this surgery done. I'm too ready to move on to this next chapter.

Good luck to us all!

Hi keketwin! I have already started buying Protein Shakes and a little blender to get myself psyched for the diet. My birthday is in the middle of the 2 week pre op diet so I'm calling friends so we can Celebrate before the diet starts. I'm nervous too. I wasn't going to tell people but then I decided, I need the support!!!! I'm going to need to B$&@th! So I've gotten friends and co workers on board. Hang in there. We are in this together.

Good morning! Good luck! I'm October 30 and feel so lucky that my insurance is paying for this, and that I have a chance at freeing myself from the physical and psychological burden of being so fat! This forum is awesome - I love the success stories! We October bandsters are going to do great!

I 'm planning on taking a week off from work post op to get used to newness. Anybody have similar plans? How do you manage liquids once back to work?

Thanks for sharing! Have a fabulous day ...counting down!

Last night was my bday. My 2 best buds came over and had Protein Shakes w me. W played music and danced and carved pumpkins and my daughter put halloween tattoos on everyone. It was lots of fun and nice to be not food oriented. I am finding it really hard to do just the Protein shakes. I'm allowed 2 cups of non starch veg or salad per day but no dressing or sauce or fat. That's the hard part. I'm craving salt. I could eat pickles all day. Yesterday I put no fat hot sauce on my veg and that was great. I have no cravings for sweet because that's all I eat all day with the shakes so even tho I'm allowed SF pudding Jello and pops and I have them in my fridge I don't want them. I've tried the Unjury chicken Soup but since its not thick like the shakes it wasn't satisfying and my stomach growled til I could eat again 3 hours later. This weekend my daughter turns 2 and I have the challenge of making her a cake without licking anything!!! Then surgery is on Monday oct 22

Have you tried Chicken or beef broth? I can have both on my diet and also Veggie broth. They are very good and the chicken broth is salty which may help your salt cravings.

I get banded on the 29th. I just started my liquid diet Monday (15th) I can't have anything solid though, not even veggies or salad, or even pudding for that matter! I can have broth, SF popsicles, protein shakes and SF juice. Thats about it.

Good luck. Let me know how it went so I will know what to look forward to!

Don't hesitate to email me o chat. I have very few friends here in Austin that I can talk to about this. Thanks

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
