Hi All

I am a "May-be" ..maybe if everything works out I will be banded the end of May. I will be going to Dr Joya in Puerto Vallarta. Dr Joyas fee is 8k and I have only been approved for 6k, have a small amout saved and trying to come up with the rest. I am so excited and so ready I cannot hardly stand it! I do not have much support though. My parents are co-signing for me and I have a friend who has had gastric bypass. everyone else thinks I am crazy or taking the easier way out. WHATEVER! I am divorced and have had financial difficulties in the past. My son (20) is OK with me having the surgery. he just wants me to wait and have about 3-6 months living expenses saved in the event I have complications and cannot work, etc. He thinks I am being too risky. As a nurse I understand the risks. The odds are in my favor. If I had insurance and had complications my 20% or so copay could really add up and leave me with a large debt. What do yall think? Wait until I have money saved or take the risk? I know which would be smarter but at the same time I have become quite impatient. Im ready to get a cute ticker..LOL

Hi Seminole,

I'm hoping to be scheduled for my band surgery by the 15th of May. I will go to Mexicali with Dr. Aceves. I am so excited to start this new journey in my life. Good luck to all of the other May Banders...and all of you out there that have come before us. You are "MY" inspiration. This forum is so informative. I hope one day I will be able to help others who also have questions or concerns.

Robin

Hello all you May Banders! :brick:

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone beginning their journey...may you have a safe procedure and heal quickly.

I have a quick question...How many of you are doing a liquid Protein diet before your surgery, and for how long? My doc didn't really indicate a liquid diet, and I'm wondering if I should maybe do it for a few days for the heck of it? :P I haven't done a very good job with my low glycemic index diet...I definitely have food issues. :nono: I'm praying that the band will be a tool that helps me finally lick this thing!

Take care all!

Kelli

I wonder why some docs require pre-op diets for some of their patients, and not others?

I went to the information seminar and the facilitator said his Dr. asks women to lose 10 lbs, and men lose 30. (He did have a great deal to lose.) As it turns out, I am having the same surgeon and he said nothing to me about pre-op diets or losing any weight. The only requirement is nothing to eat/drink after midnight.

Hi Sleepyjean

You're not a topic killer at all! In fact I was very interested to read your response to "how are you mentally". I am also seeing a therapist, even prior to my decision to get banded. I really like being invisible and as I live in London feel I can wander the streets quite anonymously. I'm not sure what all my "issues" are but have been lighter & more attractive in the past and have found I miss the anonymity. Once you are no longer invisible you have to handle all the people around you in a way that previously you didn't have to. I also think I have used my weight as a cop-out for lots of things ... the excuse for ways my life isn't going how I want it. So the reason I'm not in a relationship is how I look ... or I'd be the president of the company by now if I didn't have this weight issue to deal with.

I'm looking forward to working on issues with my therapist - and I predict that being banded will make my issues much more "visible" to me because I won't be able to hide behind food and eventually won't be able to hide behind fat.

I wish it were sooner too..!

xo

Hey Stitchy ~ I'm with you, no food after midnight. I had pre-op class today and we don't have a pre-op diet. I do have some Optifast shakes I'm going to use up b4 they expire in July, but it's not required. I've gained 15 lbs since Jan!! :omg: ENOUGH last suppers for me!!! I'm done with that.....now I know I can still enjoy food with the band again some day.

Hi Kelli ~ Thanks for your prayers....I will pray for you also & the rest of the May group as well. :biggrin1:

Welcome lululacy!!! It's nice to have you here!!

seminole ~ I'm confused.....are you getting banded in MX or Boston?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
