I'm In Mourning...wanna Join Me?

Recommended Posts

I am in mourning...well kind of...let me explain. This weekend I got partially stuck on a chocolate chip cookie--not one of those hard, dry ones but instead it was one of those warm, gooey, chocolately, surely directly from Heaven. It looked and smelled so good that I guess all rational thought left my head because although I sure enjoyed that warm, gooey cookie...I suffered almost as soon as I swallowed it. This made me wonder...how many of you are now mourning foods that were once a huge part of your life and now you can't go anywhere near them??

Please...I don't need lectures saying "oh you shouldn't have eaten that." or "You know Cookies aren't healthy, I only eat health stuff." etc...yeah...I know all this stuff and really don't want to hear it. I am not the only one who has/or will do this--and yes...it was a learning experience...but it was also a huge disappointment that I will no longer be able to enjoy this yummy treat. I know that I'll get over it and move on.

Please feel free to share some of the foods that you are mourning...maybe together we can share a moment of silence and a few smiles and then move on toward our new healthy life.

having a band is way different from (dieting)

its all up to choices. its all up to our mental thinking.

if i want a cookie like you described, i am gonna have it. just one. not the whole box or bag (that is how i got obese in the first place).

i dont mourn anything. i dont (miss) anything. i ate enough junk/high fat foods in my past that i really dont need to have them right now. but since i am not in that diet thinking, i will eat what i know is better for my body and my health. food is not the enemy. overeating is. (i was a huge binger/purger).

my hub and son love junk food. i have it in the house. yep i do. do i want to eat them? heck yeah but i am stronger then a bag of chips or Cookies. those high fat/junk items cannot make me eat them. if we choose to eat that, then we do. if you do, eat it and get on with it.

far be it from me to lecture anyone, but def think we need to eat to live and not focus on (what you cant have) because you can eat whatever you want. (the band makes it in smaller amounts)

i wish you and anyone who reads this, the best always :)

You're right!!! If I want something I'm gonna have it (or at least try a bite to see how it goes down before trying another). I do know that there are foods that I can no longer eat because getting stuck just isn't worth it--no matter how good that bite tasted--such a pizza, my mom's chicken and noodles. Thanks for your kind comments.

I completely agree with Carolinagirl. I can and still do eat whatever I want. There is nothing I can't eat and I wouldn't want it any other way. I just know that when I do want to indulge it has to be occasionally and in moderation. For instance, about once a month I order pizza for my kids and I, but I only have 2 pieces rather than a half a pizza like I used to. A couple days ago I was really craving a Peanut Butter cup, so bought one pack, had one and gave the other to my son, rather than eating two entire packs alone like I used to.

I go by the 90/10 rule. 90% of the time I eat healthy, 10% of the time I eat what I want. But I don't mourn any foods. I just enjoy them in moderation.

You're absolutely correct that as bandsters make their adjustments to healthier eating, we can actually mourn the loss of our comfort foods as we say good bye to them.

Like carolinagirl, I usually allow myself to have a bite of what food I am craving...it does not happen often, but I accept that we are not perfect, and will not be compliant with our bandster diet 100% of the time.

Mourn your loss...and focus on how much healthier you will feel in the future without your cookie who is not your friend.

Actually thought i mourn bread and rice but not really.

Enjoy life!!

Thank you for posting something that you are missing. This is what I wanted to hear...not "oh have a bite if you want it." We all have things we miss/must steer clear of no matter what thoughts enter (or my case leave) my head. Thanks for sharing.

In mourning...subway sandwiches, a huge cheeseburger, a thick sirloin steak, pizza, Bagels and doughnuts, hmmm I could go on and on. But, in the midst of mourning I am celebrating life!!!!! Walking and running, bending to tie my shoes, pulling myself out of a bath tub, riding in amusement rides, hiking and climbing, swimming at a public pool. So it's a small sacrifice that yummy food.< /p>

I eat whatever I want as far as sweets, etc go.

The only thing I could honestly say I will miss eating is this delicious hot beef/mozzarella cheese/cream cheese/pepper sandwiches that this local shop makes. We only used to get them a couple times a year, but I wouldn't be able to handle the bread anymore. And fresh french bread :)

I miss donuts. They seem to be the only bread product that gets stuck, no matter how well I chew.

I'm in mourning big time too. I can't eat any bread products so no BLT's, grilled cheese, sub sandwiches. Nothing like that. Or cake, brownies, Cookies, donuts.

No pizza or burgers or burritos.

Can eat candy and ice cream though.

I think it must be a good thing for me that I can't eat those things. But I sure miss them, sometimes a whole lot!

I miss donuts, candy, chips, and DR PEPPER like crazy! I use to cry over the Dr. Pepper, but those days are mostly gone. I know share my candy as well. I don't eat chips and donuts. I obviously don't drink my DP, but like all good addictions, yes I cry for it.

I feel very fortunate that 5 months out I haven't had any complications or trouble with anything getting stuck yet (knocking on wood! ) but with the being said I haven't pushed the limits very either. I too am mourning some of my all time favorite comfort foods such as STEAK!!! But in return I am gaining so much and for that I am truly thankful!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
