So I am in the final stages of the pre-op process and was wondering if there are many nurses who have had this surgery. Specifically, OR nurses.....I'm curious as to how long you had to be off work. I know they say it depends on what you do for a living as to how long you will be off work and I'm trying to plan my time off and such. Just curious

There is a nurse group on here but no one has posted on it...I joined but was disappointed that no one uses it :(

I'm hoping to only be off a week myself but I do a lot of positioning help in the OR and just pulling/pushing the beds may be of some concern to the surgeon....we shall see.

as a former CNA I can tell you from having lap band surgery and knowing the physical demands of patient care (weather you are a RN or CNA). If you have to do any lifting in your job I'd give yourself more then a week to be back to work.

Sitting for any length of time is bothersome , standing sucks till about two weeks out you are tired. Also this surgery hurts more then other surgeries.

Ask if you can take more then a week off I highly advize it.

I'm an LPN and work in LTC, I do a lot of walking with my med cart and bending to do certain treatments and the occasional lifting and positioning, I am hoping to be off for 2 weeks, from surgery date until my follow up visit with the surgeon. We will see, good luck!

Nurses Rock! :0)

I too am an RN on busy tele unit. With all of the responses looks we might have found a new group to relate too. I am having surgery on Aug 27th. Will be taking about 2 weeks off. I think I can find other nurses to "lift" for me. God knows I have done enough lifting for our "expecting" co-workers. Any body else having surgery soon? BTW i am in california. Anybody on west coast?? NURSES do rock!

I'm a nurse too :) I'm just at the beginning of my journey, though. I go to my seminar next month. I'm borderline at best for my BMI but thinking positively that my insurance will cover.....would be nice to have support from my fellow nurses:)

I am a an RN and work in an ambulatory care center. I needed at full two weeks. Not so much because of the physical activity, but because I was so weak from not eating or drinking much. Good Luck to you all!!

I'm rn on a neuro floor. I was banded aug 14th and I'm also taking 2 wks off. If you're unit is very short handed like mine then you know there's not many people who aren't very busy themselves to delegate to.

I am a RN working in the Cardiac ICU, I took 6 weeks off and was on lite duty for 2 weeks.. Its all or nothing, I couldn't have others do my lifting. Physically I felt fine after 4 weeks, but my MD said post surgery our bodies are high risk for a hernia.. Good Luck to everyone on their lap band journey..

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
