Dilated Pouch And Unfill

Recommended Posts

liquid diet and high Protein for 2 Weeks!

Barium test and xrays today showed that regularly eating too much aggravated and expanded my stomach pouch above the band and now can't have another fill till the dilation goes down. They took out all of the liquid today!

And, resting metabolism testing showed that my metabolism has slowed to almost nil.. I burn @600 cals less than I should when not moving at all~meaning my workouts are only burning half of what I need to! My workout average burn is about 3~400cals,at most.

THAT is why my weight loss has been slower than most!

So, now I am on a strict liquid diet to fix dilation, my cals have been cut to no more than 1000/per day, o HAVE to get in at least 60 grams of protein a day, AND I was instructed that eating my workout cals earned is not wise for me right now due to my metabolism!

What a day...

I discovered the same news as you did today as well. They completely unfilled my band and now I'm on the strict liquid diet for two weeks then four weeks of puréed foods. After this six weeks is up I go back for another UGI to see if the dilation is down. Then hopefully I can start filling my band again.

I've been threatened with the same - overeating doesnt necessarily mean stuffing your face till your bursting, does it? Its just not measuring.

I think mine's fixed itself with a slight unfill, I dont have any symptoms now. My dilation was very very minor , but I was warned to be aware of it or else an unfill would be on the cards. I've gone back to measuring out my food and eating a bit more often - seven years out I'm still learning and working to stay on track.

bummer about the metabolism, still I think many of us would have the same problem. How many people do you know who are rather fat without appearing to eat an incredible amount?

I wonder if this is what was going on with me? I was having moderate to severe pain about 35 -40 minutes after eating. An UGI found nothing, however, they emptied my band prior to the UGI, completely. The UGI showed noting wrong...kind of at a loss....

What symptoms were you having that caused them to check for this? If you don't mind sharing, how much were you eating? I worry about this and just want to learn from your experience so hopefully I can prevent this too. Good luck to you!

My only symptom was slow weightloss

I was told that I have a dilated pouch and was unfilled, but was told to do only 2 days of liquids. I still have pain on the left side of my stomach. worse at times. I'm so fed up but dont want to lose my band either. no weight loss in 2 yrs. It's as if I've developed two stomachs. one above the other.

I'm in the same boat. Under floroscopy doctor told me that my pouch was bigger than it should be. She told me that I would get a warning this time, but if next checkup showed the same, she will unfill me and I will go on liquids for 6 weeks. For now I have been instructed to measure my portions. I did get a slight fill, so, I'm thinking that I'm not that bad yet.

I keep a loose band because my allergies and drainage cause the dreaded lapband cement that is only dissolved by drinking lots of hot liquids and is very unpleasant, thus I have to be really careful with my portions. I had decent restriction and my portions have never been over 1 cup of food, however, I got into the habit of not chewing well and eating too fast. This is what I think caused the dialation.

Someone asked about symptoms. For me the biggest symptom was more hunger in between meals and no weight loss. The most obvious symptom that I should have never ignored was feeling full at meal time then all of sudden I would feel a thump in my pouch, due to food going thru quickly, then I could eat another meal if I chose to. I thought this was because I needed a fill, however, this was not the case and Doc said that a enlarged pouch of course holds more food and will push everything down quickly.

Lesson learned? If something doesn't feel right get it checked. I think the biggest disappointment is first myself and second being banded is high maintenance. I still love my band though! Hope this helps anyone who may be experiencing some of my symptoms and have ignored them. jake

I just dont know what to do other than accept that i will be battling my weight for the resg of my life. I think the band may have been a bad choice for me. After getting my metabolism checked it made more sense to me. Even on the two week Atkins style diet prior to surgery, i did not lose a pound! I only lose when i am exercising. That should have been a sign for me that i really didnt need surgery. I need to watch WHAT I eat AND work out....the old school way to losing weight. Instead, i thought I was taking the easy way out and now i am extremely depressed and disappointed with the outcome. I was 5'2, 220 before surgery. 2 weeks after i had liquid removed, i went down to 188 and now back at 196. Small changes in weight.

Now that i dont have liquid in my band i am overeating again.

I dont want to go through the pain and agony of having the surgery reversed and dont want to get the sleeve or one if those other surgeries that require low maintenance..but being on pills or in the bathroom for the rest of my life.

Don't give up! This is only a short stop at a rest area on your journey. Once we get this dialation back to normal we'll figure out a way to make this work. I'm sure there are methods to get your metabolism working better. Once you get over this hump you can see a nutritionist to get advice. I will have to be more careful with my meals and more cautious with how I eat them.

As far as battling the weight we must remind ourselves how long it took us to get big and all the bad eating habits that we've acquired. It will take us awhile to re-learn good eating habits and the band is there to help. This is a big investment that we have to make work. I know I have to be reminded every so often that the band is a slow weight loss system and I want results today and the final outcome tomorrow. We've got to be patient.

For now, we've been given some lemons and I choose to make lemonade. We can do this!!! Hang in there! jake

Thanks for the kind words! Im working on. I have to work out this rough patch of depression and get back on track. One thing i did learn is that my work outs have not been as productive as they should be. I have to break a sweat. Until now, i have been stopping as soon as i get tired..very little sweat. I think i will see some results when i push myself.

Im feeling depressed as well. I dont want to have another surgery either. I keep hearing from the clinic to make better food choices and to cut down on portion size. I thought the band was the tool I needed to help me with that problem. That was one of the reasons I chose to be banded. I've always stayed hungry and still do. I never had the restriction like It was advertised to give you. when I see the Dr. again, I will see about doing liquids longer to get my pouch small enough again to work. I also have to start working out more at the gym untill I sweat, B/C I'm not one that sweat either LOL.

At least you have a chance to fix things now guys!!!! I had no dilation, just straight to slipsville and urgent band removal within days! With the dilated pouch YOU have the chance to save your band. You have the chance to work this tool you've been given. A dilated pouch can go back to normal. Follow your doctors rules to a T though!!! You have no room for error and cheating at this point, a bite of a big old Nasty cheeseburger may be all it take to cause a slip. Surgery is should be the leat of your worries, a healthy you should e the goal.

The band is not the easy way out and if anyone told you this, they lied :). Take care of yourselves. Take care of your bands. You can all laugh at me in 6 months when I have another surgery because my stomach was too jacked up to do a revision at the time of my band removal.

Everyone has been so nice here. I also stopped logging my food in myfitness pal because i got tired of seeing no results. I got lots of support from friends, but also felt like i was not making progress. It got harder when i found out that my metab was slow and could no longer "eat" the calories accumulated from exercising. Just so hard....anyhooo...heres my.next question...and then i am out for my.morning attempt at jogging! Was not breaking a sweat walking anymore...even walking fast!.

I had the Fluid takrn out of my band on aug 1. Liquids for seven days, soft foods for 7 days....a week lapse before i was due to go back for barium swallow to see if dilation was fixed. Well, i had to reschedule for work issues and the next available date is Sept. 17th!!!

I can tell i have already been eating my bad ways and definatley not measuring...since i have no liquid in the band, am i still in danger of a slip? I am worried about this and cant get in to the doc, but i also cant will myself to be strict until my appointment. Fighting hunger and no restriction...all the reasons i got the band in the first place. No self control!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
