New To The Banded World And Feeling Kind Of Alone!

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

My name is BandedSweety96 and I am 10 days Post-op Allergan Lapband. My doctor is Dr. John Marsden and I had my procedure done at Baylor Plano. I am currently struggling with eating and determining what are hunger pains or just healing pains from the band. I have lost 16 pounds total since I have started this journey. My current weight is 232 and my goal weight is 175. I am dealing with a lot of gas bubbles and discomfort. If anyone has any suggestions or helpful comments please feel free to comment.

Well, you're not alone here. Wish I could help you but I had no problems with my post op pain. Took a few ibuprofens and that was about it. If you don't see a lot of responses try again during the week a little earlier might be a good idea?

ugh..I was gassy too, what helped for me was walking, just moving..It will go away,, so will the pain, I promise..

This site has been awesome for me, just a life savor. Only my husband and one friend knows (who also had the band) that is it, so this place is great to come and post anything, to find out what some foods people can eat, what foods to avoid, fills, what to expect, just anything!! As for hunger pains, everyone is so diffrent, I know I after a bit I was hungry, remember you have the band but you do not have any fills yet, so you may be hungry, but try to drink Water first, then if you really need to eat, make the Protein choice,I always have Protein shakes on hand.

Dont ever feel alone :( because wow, you are not!! Each day is a new learning experience, but make as many posts as you feel you need to!!! YOu will do awesome!!! :)

@Lannae Thank you so much! My husband, my friend that is banded and that referred my to her doctor and a coworker of mine that is on the fence about having the procedure are the only ones that know that i have been banded. It has been hard to going to family functions this summer and know that I can not currently eat. Everything we do in my extended family is surrounded with FOOD! I don't want to be nonsocial but lately I have been just to help myself heal. I think I moved too fast on changing from liquids to soft so I hope I haven't damaged anything...but over all I am feeling better since surgery. I do need to get a better work out routine I am starting the couch 2 5K slowly. :)

yay!!! Great goal!! I know what you mean about functions!! Every weekend there seems to be some sort of function!!So just slow down, talk between bites, if anyone mentions that is not alot of food, just say, that you ate a huge amount of something before you came, but to be honest, alot of times, nobody notices..If you get stuck, just excuse yourself, walk it off, pretend you have to make a call,etc..lol..good luck!!!!! I feel so great!!!

Welcome to "bandland". I just celebrated my 6 Year Banniversary on July 6th.

I always enjoy seeing new bandsters start their journey.

It does get better!!! Take it one day at a time.

I found a heating pad really helped with the gas pain. I had terrible left shoulder pain for 3 days. The heating pad saved my life and walking really helped.

I've met so many great people here at lapbandtalk.com I have also talked to many of them on the phone. If you have any questions please feel free to email. I also have free long distance and would be happy to call you.

Might not have been such a great idea moving to soft food 10 days post op, if it was earlier than u should have, what were your doctors guidelines ? this time is for healing so the stomach needs to have a more liquid sort of diet to stop it trying to digest food.

Sounds like u are doing well weight wise, keep moving and eating right and the gas does eventually go, but take it slowly and things should improve with time :)

I think check with your doctor again, did your doctor not give u any rules to follow for eating, like how many weeks liquids how many weeks pure .. ?

AS my friend Cazzy said. I think you ate food too fast. At this time you should be having Soups w/o cream. ((Broth) Mostly soft foods only. Slow down on the eating. As a new bandster, most of us spend most of our time thinking and thinking of food, how soon, how much. Why not think about how you are going to walk and exercise? When the Dr gives you fills it will take several of them for you to have restriction. Before that it is a good idea to measure your food. Drink Water more than ever. We are not as hungry as we think. We are all used to eating eating and eating. When you have restriction, you will know. Also No bread, no Pasta, no white flour. No soda. No candy no Cookies. Drink more water than ever. and walk to get the gas pains out. Get a book on Carbs, Protein, Fats etc. YOU are now on a Low carb, high protein diet. You can do it. Take measurements of your body also. hugs.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
