What To Do When Food Gets Stuck?

Recommended Posts

Walking around usually helps me, I'm banded 2 1/2 years now and I was getting stuck so many times ( my fault) that I actually don't eat that much in fear of being stuck. My doc says that's why I'm not losing I'm not getting enough real food. I get in my Protein with shakes but I know I'm not eating enough cal. They just removed some Fluid in hopes it will allow me to eat we'll see I feel like such a failure I avoid food at all cost.

Sorry about the venting just really angry with myself

Here's something that worked for me yesterday. I ate a juicy plum. I'd eaten them before and just lately. I guess I missed a large chunk of skin and it may have covered the portal between the two stomachs. Pressure, pain, discomfort, sliming, weakness, it was all there. I had to go somewhere and I had 45 minutes. After 30 minutes of that very uncomfortable feeling and sliming, I drank 2 large sips of Water and stood on my head with my arms supporting most of my weight.

It worked. Within a minute I was able to flush the rest down with Water and went off to my appointment. I don't recommend this technique but I was desperate.

tmf, what is the slime you all talk about?

Slime is the mucous the body generates trying to help the stuck item go down. It is very thick and clingy. When it cannot go down, it comes up..you cannot swallow it, so you must spit it out. Once the stuck item is cleared, then the sliming will stop.

can one do things to avoid this? or is it something that comes with the territory?

Getting stuck and sliming is not something that should happen frequently. It could mean you're too tight (need a bit of fill removed), not cutting food small enough, eating too fast, or as in my case, your stomach has developed scar tissue under the band creating tightness even without a fill. If you're having frequent episodes you should see your band doctor.

I will put my arms over my head and stretch. It doesn't help but somehow I think it will. LOL I've used pineapple juice and it helps. It has bromelein in it which is used in meat meat tenderizer. It also a natural anti inflammatory. I have put sone meat tenderizer in some Water and sipped it and it helped. When food needs to come up it comes up all by itself for me. I've only had to stick my finger down my throat two or three times.

Good luck.

Don't get stuck! Avoid foods that get stuck in your pouch or avoid eating too fast or too big. Are you feeling any restriction yet? Probably not, because if you were feeling restriction you would have had this wonderful sensation already. And yes, it comes with the territory.

I walk around. I sometimes raise my arms over my head and it helps with the pressure. Honestly, I rarely get stuck anymore. I am super careful to chew well.

Unfortunately last might I took too big of a bite of dinner because I let myself get too hungry, and I was miserable stuck. I knew it as soon as a swallowed that I made a mistake and had rushed it. I had to help myself urp it up since the pain was bad and the sliming was filing my mouth.

I stretch my arms above my head..it kind of stretches my stomach and helps a bit.. If you are at home, you can get down on your hands and knees and put your arms out stretched, with your butt up in the air..It looks weird but it can help, otherwise, you will have to run to the bathroom..if you start getting hiccups..stop eating!

I was stuck today. In a restaurant bathroom for almost an hour while my kids and mother sat at the table. I slimed, ate papaya tablets and my mom brought me hot wate. As soon as it flushed through I was good as new. Chew and eat SLOW.

A few days ago I had my second fill, and now having to re learn how to eat because before I was not really even restricted. I did give up bread and Pasta for the most part before just because but I could always eat these types of crackers, well this morning, I got stuck, then after a bit I felt better, only to re do it a couple hours later, but this time I was so agitated anything and everything was making it feel stuck..I had some hot tea and I am better now, but what a dummy I am..i guess, no more crackers, time to find a new comfort treat. So yes hot tea and time is what worked for me, oh and a lesson learned!!!

I've never thrown up, thus far. But whenever I feel that very painful stuck feeling and start sliming I just stand at a sink and pound on my chest. I don't know if this is helping or even good for me, but I havent had the food come back up. Hopefully I never will. Had my 4th fill today and can already tell I'm going to have good restriction. Yay!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
