July Bandsters In Need Of A Buddy

Recommended Posts

I just got banded yesterday (July 25). Feeling sore but I know it will get better. My surgeon also repaired a hiatal hernia while he was in there so it's hard to take a deep breath with my diaphragm hurting the way it is.

Would also love a buddy!

I'll be your buddy! I was banded 18 July and also had a hiatal hernia repaired. Hang in there! It will truly get better and better every day! I had my first post-op appointment today and I feel great! My surgeon said I don't look like someone who just underwent a major abdominal surgery! Lol!

Thank you so much! Good to hear that you're feeling so much better being only a week before me! This morning seems to be better then yesterday so that's good! I've also had 3 c-sections, so I knew going in that the sooner I got up and moving, the sooner I'd be feeling better. My nurse was amazed with how soon I wanted to get up and around!

I told my husband last night that all I want to do is gulp a big glass of Water down. I know I CAN'T do that, but I'm so thirsty and the little sips just aren't doing it for me! So... I just continue to take my little sips. I know I didn't make it to 6-8 cups of liquid yesterday. I tried, but just couldn't do it. It took me the duration of a movie to get through a coffee cup of chicken broth! Heck, just taking my meds this morning filled me up! Zantac for nausea, an antibiotic, my tylenol with codeine and a stool softener that you're supposed to take with lots of Water. Doing my best to stay compliant, my new little tummy just isn't letting me do it.

I know i have lots of water weight added on from the IV though. From my weigh-in when I went in for surgery on Wednesday to my weigh-in yesterday morning before my swallow test, I had gained 6 pounds. A little frustrating, but at least I know it's nothing what I did!

Hmm, that's strange...I was able to drink as much water as I wanted right after the surgery. And I didn't gain any water weight from the IV either - I was only getting fluids for about an hour during the surgery and they took it out as soon as I came out. My stomach did feel really tight at first and my shoulders really hurt from anesthesia, but that improved within a couple of days, the more I walked and stuff. Also, I didn't take all those meds - just Vicodin for pain, but even that I only took twice a day instead of every 6 hrs as prescribed. As time goes on I feel like I can eat more and more and that scares me - I have not lost any weight since I started the slider phase: Soup, oatmeal, yogurt, etc. It's alot of carbs and hopefully I can cut down on those once I transition to solids.

But anyway, everyone heals differently, so just keep up the good work and I'm sure you will do great!!!

I was on an IV from the time I got there on Wednesday morning until shortly before I left on Thursday, so over 24 hours with an IV. Between that and the swelling in my belly, I was expecting it to hang around. Hopefully, I'll be down below what I came in at on Wednesday when I go to my post-op next week!

My surgeon doesn't want anything by mouth until after the swallow test and modified upper GI to make sure everything is working the way it's supposed to. I've got my Water bottle filled now and am determined to empty it at least twice today.. It holds 20 oz, so that should be pretty doable.

Oh wow, you stayed overnight?? I was in and out in about 4 hrs. I guess different surgeons have different ways of doing things. Definately stick to his orders. That's a great goal for keeping hydrated! I have trouble getting my fluids in - so busy at work and all, never have time to take a Water break :(

Yeah, I had to stay overnight. It was kind of nice, actually! No kids! LOL! I finished about 1 1/2 fills of my water bottle, but also drank about 8 oz of broth. I'm stuffed now. Crazy! Tomorrow I get to move onto full liquids instead of clear liquids so I'm kind of excited to try some Soup or yogurt. Local grocery store had greek yogurt on sale so I bought a bunch of them for the Protein and warned the kids to STAY AWAY! I'm ready to take my meds and fall into bed, though. I'm exhausted despite the 2 naps I took today. Glad I don't work summers!

Good job on drinking your water! I ate Greek yogurt too. I love the texture - its so smooth! It was so great to change things up and actually eat real food...even though it just slides down your throat...lol. I was so sick and tired of those shakes! I am starting my soft food phase today - really happy about that. But I can eat more and more every day and THAT scares me! I'll have to wait till 22August, my next appt, to get a fill. But I think I really need it. They tools me they only put about 3ml of Water into my 8ml band at first because of the stomach swelling during the surgery. But as I heal and swelling goes down - I definately don't get full as fast. I guess I'll just have to keep my appetite under control with my awesome will power (yeah, right...lol) till my appt.

Keep up the good work!

P.S. Must be nice to have summers off! Are you a teacher??

Silly Weasel,

My first fill appointment is on August 20th and I am also feeling like I can eat more as the swelling diminishes (also a little afraid), so I know exactly what you mean.

Luckily this morning I went to my first week post op appointment and asked the doctor about this problem, and he told me that I have to try and eat more solid foods and see how they feel, the more solid they are, the longer that you're gonna feel full and to keep drinking a lot of water(NOT with the meal). He also said that even though we dont have restriction yet, we still are gonna get full a lot faster and I have found that to be true. I whish you the best

jbdecker2,

Most likely they will prescribe you Zantac for a month, this will prevent the acid from building up and going up. So I wouldn't worry too much about that :)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
