Is Frequent Pbing Hazardous For The Band?

Recommended Posts

The first couple of weeks after I get a fill, I have to learn to eat all over again and find new items that I can no longer eat, which results in frequent PBing for a couple of weeks. I've never actually forcefully vomited since I've been banded, and I know that can damage the band and lead to band slips. I'm just curious if frequent PBing will possibly cause problems and lead to the band slipping also.

I have out and out vomited a couple of times and band is still okay I have the same problem everytime I get filled . I know they say we do not want you to throw up so I always get nervous but in three and half years everything is okay. Every fill for me is a learning curve...

i don't have an answer to you question, i just wanted to respond to say i have the same problem after fills! i got a fill about two weeks ago and ever since then i've been having trouble with a lot of solid foods, like meat. IT IS JUST LIKE LEARNING TO EAT OVER AGAIN! A lot of times i get stuck or whatever and i start coughing and then i PB or vomit (i don't really know the differance). I know this is not a good thing, but i do it with every fill. My doctor always asks if i am having problems with puking and i don't know what to say, i don't want him to do an unfill yet, because without the fill i wasn't losing weight. i'm trying just to stick it out. JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW YOU'RE NOT ALONE! :D

If it helps, I've seen it explained that PBing is just kind of urping the stuck food up. And vomiting is a forceful expulsion coming from your stomach. That explanation helped me a lot because I've always known that vomiting could cause the band to slip.

I am about to get banded but what is PBing?????

PBing is Productive Burping and comes from the esophogus, not all the way from your stomach. It's not like throwing up your toenails, but more like a wet burp. It's aggravating and can be embarrassing if you are in public. Just get to the bathroom ASAP and get it over with. It won't go away if food is stuck, so just handle it and make sure you take smaller bites and wait 45-60 seconds between bites to make sure that bite goes all the way down before you take another one. Also make sure you are totally pulvarizing the food before you swallow. It'll be okay!!

Pbing is actually like spitting out chewed food! it gets stuck, but is not mixed with stomach acid, and there is no forceful evacuation of the food, it just kind of slips back up, usually following a lot of salivating!

My husband is TOTALLY disgusted when I PB--I tell him that it's really not vomit, just chewed food and saliva, but that doesn't make it any better for him. I get it, but I just wish he would bring it down a notch--it's not exactly fun for me (usually I'm in a great deal of pain).

I have found the tighter I get with fills, the longer it takes to recover. This last fill, I stayed on liquid for 2 days after and then mushy for another 2 days. It helped a lot and no PBing. But even 3 weeks out, I really have to eat very small bites and chew like crazy when eating solid foods.... meats, apples, etc.

Personally, I think PBing is dangerous... physically and mentally. It's a result of eating too fast, too much at one time and/or not chewing enough. food is stuck! So think about what you just ate and figure out what you did wrong to get stuck. Then adjust your eating behavior to match the restriction in your band so you don't PB again. The band is our life long buddy. You gotta work with it... not against it.

You may be too tight. My doctor said you will know. You will not be able to keep food down and you will probably have indigestion, especially at night. So it would be wise to talk to your doctor.

Good Luck!

I can keep food down fine when I really focus on nothing but my eating. I have a tad of indigestion, but an otc med and I'm fine.

Of any thing about the surgery I worry about it's this PBing and vomiting. I haven't been sick in around 20 years. AND I eat fast, (working on it).

The eating fast will have to stop! My after care place gave me a one minute egg timer and you really need to use it at the beginning so you know how long to wait before taking another bite. Some same 30 seconds and some say 1 minute. The timer really helps! I have always been a slow eater, but when I wait too long to eat and get hungry, I tend to eat too fast, but you don't do that real often. It's like they say, if it hurts when you do that, don't do that!! It's really not as bad as it sounds. You will be so nervous about it happening that you will be really cautious to make sure it doesn't. You have lots of support and we are here for you! Go for it!!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
