My doctor doesnt require pre-op diet. Im 7 days away. Im doing a high Protein diet. So far today its been ok. Everyones body is different. I would talk with your surgeon, maybe a nutritionist. I was fortunate to be at a center of excellence where they require on going nutrition classes, etc. Good luck in your journey!

Thanks everyone for your input! I wonder if I tried the liquid diet now it would help "kick start" weight loss for me? I can't seem to lose a single pound at this point. I'm frustrated as he**!

To MochaLee: Congrats on your surgery...hope your recovery is going well. Let us know how you are feeling/doing!!

To Amee Rae: Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I suppose you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hope your surgery goes well!

I would not do anything drastic until I knew what is required. We all want to lose weight, but to do a liquid diet when you haven't been instructed to do so is just putting yourself through torture. It isn't something you can easily maintain for 3 months. Most of them aren't nutritionally sound. Without the short term goal of surgery in a week or two, I feel it is a set-up for failure. Sticking to a liquid diet is VERY difficult. When you decide you cannot stay with it, will you rebound a gain even more back? This is a rhetorical question, but something so many of us have done in the past.

My suggestion would be to follow a healthy diet now. Don't fall into "Last Supper Syndrome" where you feel the need to eat everything because you won't be able to eat it ever again...this is completely untrue. While it is hard to do without the feedback of the band, start practicing eating slowly and taking small bites. These are habits that will serve you well once you are banded. Practice chewing well. Try not drinking while eating, not an easy thing to do at first for most of us.

Just my more than two cents worth. Best wishes for your surgery!

I tried the liquid diet from my surgeon's office in advance (possible surgery date in February). I just wanted to see if I could handle it and decided to follow it for 1 week, which is what my surgeon will require if I decide for sure to go with surgery. There's no harm in following your surgeon's pre-op diet early in order to see how you react to it...but don't follow it any longer than the time he's instructed. These diets are short term diets.

I ended up only following it for 1 day, as I had a sort of "fat girl vision quest" moment and realized that I may not be making the right decision for me. It's too much to go into here, but if you want to read about why I decided to it I've posted it on my blog here: http://hotmessprincess.com/2011/12/imaginary-lap-band/ and if you want to read about the results of that incredible day, you can read that on my blog here: http://hotmessprincess.com/2011/12/imaginary-lap-band-day-1-is-done/

Again, I was following my surgeon's pre-op diet as he instructed...so I don't think there's any harm in taking that for a test drive. I am beyond happy that I chose to do this. It taught me a lot about myself and made me really think about my decision to have lap band.

Whatever you decide, please use common sense and consult your doctor...that's what he's there for. :-) Best of luck to you in your success...because it's only a matter of time before you're kick'in some booty and look'in fabulous!

My surgeon also requires a 14 day liquid diet. My surgery is on 1/9/12 and I have been on a liquid diet for 10 days. It's very hard during the holidays but it will be worth it soon.

Wow, Dianne, I read your blog posts. I, too, get Migraines. When I did my pre-op, it wasn't pretty. But after the 3rd day it got much better. I had to do 2 weeks.

I just want to say that if you decide to go ahead, your attitude will be different for the pre-op. You will know that you cannot post-pone it. It is for the goal of making your surgery safer. You just power through and get it done. I did Medifast, I had tried it before and failed miserably after a day. But for my surgery, I stuck to it and did not cheat once, because I knew I had to and I had a short-term goal in mind to focus on. I knew I didn't have a choice. My surgeon said if he got inside and my liver wasn't ready he'd close me up and no band, or maybe have to do an 8" incision and do it open...no thanks.

After surgery, yes, things change...but not as dramatically as many think. Yes, there is a post-op diet to make it through. That period sucks as well, but after that, you DO get food again. I eat the same foods I ate before. I even have some junk from time-to-time. Not in the same quantities or as often, but as a treat? Yeah.

My surgery is on January 13th. The instructions I was given is for a high Protein diet 1 week prior consisting of 4 meals a day...2 are Protein Shakes, 1- lean meat and green vegetable, and the 4th can pick 2 items from a list of egg, fruit, Cereal, muffin, toast, bagel, or yogurt. I have been trying to do it for the last week to gear up for this week and have done ok, but did cheat on 2 meals this week. just gotta be good the rest of this week. I am glad they ordered something like this to get me ready for being on liquids for a while afterward.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
