Will someone share what the Pre-Op diet is/consists of? I'm still about 3 months out from surgery, but am curious what this is. I trying to diet now but am having difficulty, probably due to holidays. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate the help. Thanks!!

Every surgeon is different. My pre-op was 2 weeks of Medi-fast. It would have been 2 weeks of HMR shakes, but I already had the Medi-fast from a prior weight loss attempt. You'll have to ask YOUR surgeon to be sure what your instructions will be.

I am on mine right now.... I am suppose to drink 5 Carnation Instant Breakfasts a day ( sugar free of course ) Then I can replace 1 a day with a cream Soup, SF instant pudding, smoothie...etc I can have all the clear broth and sgar free drinks and popsiicles I want. My surgery is in 2 days, so tomorrow its Clear Liquids only. It gets easier after the first day or two. I really like the CIB, they raste pretty good, but I have yet to have all 5 in a day. They taste like Nestle' Quick My dietician said I could have Tomato Soup, too. I buy Cambells and use Water to mix with it, and it tastes pretty good too when your hungry. I just had a can of Progresso chicken Noodle soup ( light) I did cheat and leave in a few carrots and noodles. It tasted pretty good too. The whole can only has 140 calories. I also like the Poweraide Zero Sports drinks. 88cents, at Walmart for a quart. I drank it before my liquid diet. Good Luck!!!

My doctor doesn't require a pre op diet. Do you think it helps get you going? GOOD LUCK on your surgery in 2 days and keep us posted!

Mine was a 9 day liquid diet with the HMR shakes (4 a day) with a mix and match of things like cottage cheese or yogart, or fruit or v8/tomato juice, with broth, sugar free Jello and sugar free popicles as wanted. It wasn't bad. I lost 8 1/2 pounds on it, good way to start!

my dr didnt require a pre-op diet. he just told me that if i lost weight that would be fine, just dont gain any in the next 2 weeks.well i cut back some anyway and lost 6 lbs preop. im purely guessing here, but i think its because i dont carry much weight around my liver , i carry my weight lower around my tummy hips and rear. (of course)

Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I am 5 days post-op. I had to do a 7 day full liquid diet which was hell for me. Full liquid consist of the following:

*broth Soups

*Cream Based Soups

*Protein Powder/Shakes (muscle milk, carnation, slimfast, etc) My surgeon and dietitian required the shakes to be at least 20 grams of protien and 180 calories or less.

*sugar-free Yogurt/Pudding

* 100% fruit juice

*Water

*Crystal light juice

Good luck!

My surgeon requires a 14 day liquid diet that includes the same items as the others listed. My surgery is on 1/9 and I have been on a liquid diet for 7 days.....it's not easy but I have lost 12 lbs, so it's defiantly worth it.

Thanks everyone for your input! I wonder if I tried the liquid diet now it would help "kick start" weight loss for me? I can't seem to lose a single pound at this point. I'm frustrated as he**!

To MochaLee: Congrats on your surgery...hope your recovery is going well. Let us know how you are feeling/doing!!

To Amee Rae: Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I suppose you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hope your surgery goes well!

I had surgery on Dec 20th and was required to do a pre-op diet for two weeks. I had a choice in which one I did, however. I could either do an all liquid diet (4 protien shakes, broth and water) or two protien shakes and a small meal (consisting of mostly vegitables). I decided to do the all liquid diet, I didn't want to take any chances. I ended up losing a good bit of weight from it, somewhere around 13lbs if I remember correctly. Like others have said, doctors are all different, so you may not even need to have to do one.

I would suggest trying out a few different protien shakes in advance if you do end up having to do a pre-op diet.

I should have stressed.....Do what your Dr. says before anyone follows my advice. I was just stating what I have been doing myself .

I'm on day 1 of my pre-of diet today -- full liquid for 10 days. Protein Shakes, sugar free Jello, broth Soups (no cream soups), crystal lite, skim milk, apple/orange/grapefruit juice (up to 2 cups a day combined juices and milk + shake amounts of milk). Could be a long 10 days. My surgeon says it is especially to shrink the liver to make the surgery easier and give a boost for those first few days.

My instructions: day before surgery-light Breakfast, then clear liquids all day, nothing after midnight. Good luck!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
