Not Drinking All Of My Shakes

Recommended Posts

I have only been on my pre opt diet for one day, but I can't get all of my shakes in. They make me feel very sick and then I can't drink anymore for awhile. It is in the last afternoon and I have only had 1 drink and 1 bar. Any advice?

Try a different shake.

Phone your Dr's and ask for an alternative

What kind of pre-op diet are you on? I haven't seen one where you can eat Protein Bars. But maybe you should cut the bars out of the diet. Because you're only on a limited amount of cals you need to make sure you're getting enough Protein. It will make you feel full..I know I've been feeling stuffed.. but you really should try to push and get at least 90g of Protein in a day. One thing I do that helps me is start early. I drink my first Protein Shake at 7am. That way by lunch time I may not be hungry but I'm not stuffed. And then when dinner rolls around I can take another one. In between I do protein juices or Cappuccino. It's important to get the protein in, but you want to make sure you're spacing it out so it doesn't feel so forced, because that could be what's making you sick. Maybe try a different brand of protein shake and see if that helps.

Hope it works out for you!

All the best! rolleyes.gif

If you mix yours with Water or milk, you can add a little more liquid to thin it out, and it should go down a little easier, especially in time, and stick with the shakes, because they are higher in Protein. That for sure is something that you need.

I too, hated the Protein Shakes and could only manage one per day (I added crushed ice to them and that cut down the smell, which made me nauseous). I would also drink 2 cups of 1% white milk with a Multivitamin as a Protein Shake replacement in the morning (the milk has the same calories, carbs, Protein and fat as one of my protein shakes...so substituting was fine). Check with your doctor/dietician and see if that would be okay...it worked for me and got me through the first week of pre-diet. By the second week, I could occasionally manage two shakes per day (with ice added!)

Im on a pre op diet of two opti fast meals a day and one of meat and low carb veges, im in my second week of it, at first i found the shakes and bars to be so gross and the made me feel really sick to, If your shakes are like Protein milk shakes make them really really cold and theyr much easier to drink also if your allowed have some diet fizzy drink straight after you finish them to get the taste out of your mouth as soon as you can. Also try all the different flavours you might find some more bearable than others.

Just stay strong and stick to what your doctor said you can have, drinking the shakes does get easier after a while

Although I haven't tried them yet, maybe you can try some of the clear Protein Drinks and powders like Isopure or Unjury.< /p>

If you hate the Protein you're using, or even can't bear the smell of it, YOURE USING THE WRONG STUFF! There are plenty of products out there that are high quality Protein and taste good too. My absolute favorite is Isopure zero, in chocolate flavor. I make a shake with that, add a little more cocoa powder, and a dash of splenda, and it tastes amazing. Like chocolate milk! Isopure also makes banana cream flavor that is good. If you need a new flavor, add a few teaspoons of sugar free pudding mix or Jello mix. That is how they get all those crazy flavors at herbalife shake places. Extracts are also a good way to add flavor without adding calories or sugar.

Las but no least, if it is the texture that is bothering you, check out some ready to drink protein "juices". They come in flavors like fruit punch, and are clear, not milky, so its definitely nice for a change.

Find one you like, obviously. Although they all taste like drinking melted candle wax in my opinion.

But if you're not hungry/full after half a shake, then STOP. Normal weight people dont shove down food they dont want and that's the first thing you've got to learn.

People who have been obese and reliant on food do seem to have this panic response thinking they're going to starve. You wont. If your body says you dont want food, then you dont need it. Forget about "starvation mode" and all that rubbish. You're well and truly full of spare fuel at this stage of the game (aka fat) and if you dont feel like eating, its not going to hurt you.

If your doctor approves, try different types of Protein powders. Whole Foods and the Vitamin Shoppe sell some in single serving packets.

I love the Jay Robb Protein and I like the 100% whey (by Muscle Milk and sold at Costco).

There are a few brands of protein and/or Meal Replacement shakes that send me running to the bathroom within 15 minutes.

Ditto ! It is very Good Stuff !

I buy the Muscle Milk Light powder, and it mixes with Water.

Go to AllStar Health.com and enter the product. There under $20.00 per jug, and whatever you purchase 1 or 11 it's only 5.99 for shipping.

I keep on hand :

chocolate Milk

Peanut Butter chocolate

Strawberries n Creme

vanilla Creme

Cookies n Creme.

These are very Flavorful, and that's what helps them go down. I look forward to one everyday.

I recently donated 8 1/2 inches of hair to Locks of Love. she banded the tail then cut it off, and you should have seen how Healthy that hair looked when it was cut. Looked like a young persons Hair.

Point is ,, Everybody says you can lose your Hair if you don't drink enough Protein. (THIS IS TRUE !) But with this stuff I never lost my Hair, it only grew longer, and got healthier.

Check them out if your interested, that's were I buy my supplies at.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
