Throwing up even after a year or two following the lap-band?

Recommended Posts

Hi... I would love some input. I have been researching this surgery on and off for a few years and getting ready to go through all the steps. I have a friend whose daughter had the lap-band surgery a few years ago. She recently told me that she throws up every morning and she doesn't eat much at all. Is this normal or is she doing something wrong? I also just heard that she is having kidney problems and I have no idea as to the cause. I would hope that you would be accustomed to what you can and can't eat and how much, and wouldn't be throwing up after a few years! I would appreciate any input...

Throwing up means slipped band. Her kidney problems have nothing to do with the band. Yes the band is at more risk of slipping after a few years. Just because your accustomed to eating a certain way does not mean the band can not slip. Its not a daily occurence for most but it does happen and she needs to call her doctor. Bandsters are NEVER supposed to throw up.

My first suggestion to you is ...... go find a WLS support group. The people there will be able to answer most every question you have. It will either put your mind at ease or tell you that WLS is not for you.

Throwing up does NOT mean a slipped band..... if she throws up everything... Water, spit, food with sever pain..... that's a slipped band. So the question now is when is she throwing up.... first thing in the morning right as she gets out of bed? After she has coffee? food? I find that i can't eat right when i get up, i have to wait till about 9 or so and after coffee..... the HOT coffee helps things go down easier.

Were are you getting the information the bandsters are never supposed to throw up? I have never never met one that has NOT thrown up. Eating with the band is a learning process. We find out what we can and can't eat by eating them...... Sometimes things go well, sometimes not. On the nots, sometimes it has to come back up. It's just the way it is. I had to learn the hard way that i can't eat Steak anymore. Some bansters have no trouble with Steak... This of course is just an example. But i hope you get the picture.

EVERYONE'S experiences with the band is different. What works for me, may not work for anyone else. You just have to do your research and listen to your doctor............ BUT MOST OF ALL LISTEN TO YOUR BAND.....

It has taken me almost two years to lose 80-83lbs... why, because i chose to take it slow.... I do have issues still with my self esteem and relationship problems. But i will work them out. Right now i'm having to comes to grips with people telling me to STOP losing weight.... I still see the FAT girl in the mirror.

Hope you all the best of luck what ever your choice may be.

I'm 2 years out and still throw up, but not every morning. I have trouble with dry foods, like bread, and I don't chew meat enough or eat slow enough. If I try to eat after that, even if it's something like Soup, I have trouble keeping it down.

Sorry, I'm new and just learning how to use this forum...

Anyways, I'm someone who has vomited countless times :( and had 2 slips, yep, not 1 but 2!! And I knew they were more than just having something caught... felt like I was having a heart attack (not that I'd ever had one, thank god!) I couldn't keep anything down, not even my own saliva. With something just caught, it'd be painful but I'd get up and walk then it'd go through. And what a relief that was!! Yeah so, I do vomit more than I ever thought I would and getting a slip was really easy to do.

Hope that helps!

I'm going to re-word this topic to describe me...........I don't "throw up" but I still get food stuck and "slime" at least once a week.

I am (20) months post-op, below my goal weight but it still happens and most of the time it's my own fault. I'm either in a rush and eat too fast or eat foods that I know I shouldn't even attempt. Personally I can't eat beef of any type, not even ground beef. NO type of bread works, but crackers do. And don't even try a tortilla - the dough just makes a BIG blob and must come back up.

If I stick to the right foods that I know work and then - CHEW CHEW CHEW - I do much better

I am 2 years and a couple of months out. I have vomited on and off since I was banded. Just because you vomit does not mean you will have a slip but you could. I have had fluro with all my fills or office visits and I have never slipped. So vomiting DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL SLIP! But you should avoid it if you can as you could cause a slip. If you have pain or can not keep anything down that is a sign of slippage, but I have also heard of people who had slippage and no signs of it.

The best thing to do is avoid foods you know you will for sure have trouble with. And with foods you can eat, chew, chew, chew. The vomiting every morning I do not get unless she eats in the morning she should have no food in her pouch. Some of the vomiting has been my own fault not chewing enough, but some just happens. Dr not sure why but fully aware of it. Not everyone who gets the Band will vomit. I have friends 2 and 3 years out who have never vomited. Everyone is different.

So what did they do to fix your slips? Unfill or surgery?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
