My surgery is tuesday morning @7:30, since I'm a nurse I've just been wondering what was the deciding factor on continuing with the surgery? We all know the possible problems that can go along with having the band. Since it is an elective surgery I'd like thoughts & opinions. Thanks,Kathy

We aii have second thoughts, and get Nervous about this surgery, and that's understandable.

But I have had Dental Work that was more Painful. I had all 4 quadrants of my mouth recontoured, then filled with a packing. I'll tell you what that hurt like HLLLLL !

But,,, it needed to be done. I could have waited, but it was best to have this done asap. So I had 1 after the other done.. This was do to medication prescribed by a specialist. It caused a lot of surgery for me.

This is much easier, and Anesthesia has this down to a Patton. Yes it is life changing, but that's the point. It takes time to learn all the things you need to know, that's what were here for to.

Some of the Veterans Know what to do for a problem, and of course if it's major ... Well you need to call your Dr....

You mentioned that you are a Nurse. Well this is one thing that you rely on your surgeons help, and care. If it were RNY ! You would be told "I Did the surgery, now your on your own ! " That's the way it was explained to me by my surgeon. So you will always need someone in your life, and I hear Nurses make the worst Patients...

Yes problems can occur, thats where you need your surgeon to get you back on Track.

I hope this answers a few questions. Because I am very glad to be Banded.

Click on my name, and my profile should come up on that screen go to Topics, and click on it. Now scroll Down, and you will be able to read my journal of what I have went through.

That is more information.

Shirley.

Hi Kathy,

It took me a year to get the band do to my husbands loss of work and that meant no insurance. Once I got my insurance from my job I went a head with the op, I would say 3 day's before my surgery I was thinking can I do this is this what I want? I think we all rethink the big things in our life.

The day of the surgery I was not nervous at all I mean NOT AT ALL. I think this was because I was doing this for me and only me and it was the right thing to do.

Do what is in your heart if it is right for you then you will do it if not then hey you did not or are not ready. Do not let anyone push you into or out of the op just know only what YOU want matters.

Good luck in what ever you choose. Stay well stay safe.

Mary

I too am a nurse and had second thoughts a few days before surgery. I began to think I could do it on my own. I overcame this and went ahead with the surgery. Although I freaked out just before they put me under- I told them "wait, wait" even as I was dozing off. Would I go back and change my mind, probably not. I'm glad I have this new device to help me. I went back to work after 1 week. I just can't lift yet, so no pulling pt's up in bed!

Well today is the start of your new journey and I wish you well. I had second thoughts when I was approved and scheduled. I freaked out! But, I had given myself over a year to do it on my own and had only lost 15 lbs. The night after I was scheduled, I looked at my two little boys sleeping and I wanted to watch them grow up, teach them healthy habits, and knew I had to do this not only for them, but for me also. And so far, I have no regrets. Wishing you a speedy recovery. I am a Respiratory Therapist, so I too make a horrible patient. I told the nurse to get the oxygen away from me, that I didn't need it and was showing her how an IS should be one. lol! I don't do well under anesthesia. :)

OK, so unless I read this wrong, TUESDAY IS TODAY??? OR NEXT TUESDAY?? I am scheduled for surgery Tuesday, August 30th, and I have been having the same quesitons, I have postponed the surgery once, due to my dog having to have 2 surgeries during that time and I really wanted to be able to take care of him, and also, my Honey had just gone back to work from summer vacation and he needed to give advance notice that he needed to take several days off work.

So, they pushed it back 6 weeks, and that is nearly up, and I am freaking out today and have been for a week now and have been struggling with the pre-op diet and sick as ever with worry and stress and asking myself can I, should I, what if I regret it.

I hope you will post an update, no one will judge you harshly if you chose to back out or postpone, At least I wont.

Please keep me updated, as I am having the same doubts.

I go back and forth back and forth, I will, I wont, I will postpone, I will cancel altogether, No, I can do it, No I cant!!!! So, you are not alone.

Wow, this post has really hit home for me. I have been researching this procedure since about February 2011 and recently went through the steps in getting it done. (classes, clearances, approval etc) I have breezed through everything and I am now at the very end, with my procedure date on August 29th, 2011 (Monday!) And I am really freaking out.

At one point last week, I actually cancelled my pre-op appointment and just today re-scheduled it. I am too an RN, and I swear we are the worst patients. I have been trying to convince myself that I can do this on my own, but in reality--I know I need this help, which are hard words for me to swallow. I am worried most about complications and I can't help but think, am I going to be 80/90 years old with this band, will something happen to me, and for the RNs out there-- what if down the road I am uncoinscious and they try to put an OG tube in me, will I be damaged!!?

I hope that I am just over-analyzing things and being my own worst enemy on this.

I think it all boils down to your quality of life. Are you happy with where you are at this point? Is the quality of your life greatly reduced due to your weight? Do you think about being overweight constantly and does it hinder you from doing things you really want to do in life? It is a life changing procedure and it's good to think it over. For me, I know I am not happy all all with this excess weight. I would go into department stores and avoid the mirrors-that's no way to live. Only you can decide what's best for you! Good luck with whatever you decide!

i dont like the term banded....it is too close to branded for me, does anyone else feel like that? like you are labeled, like you had to resort to some intervention to lose weight or get healthy???? i know that is nonsense, cause if you had to have any other type of surgery no one would label you, but with the band, you are a bander, or banded, i just get weirded out by it.

Ok Val, you asked, and I am so tickled by your post that I have to answer. LOL

First, no ... I have never thought of "banded" being close to "branded" and therefore I am being labeled. And, I DID have to resort to some intervention to lose weight AND get healthy ... I got the lap band. As for being labeled, PLZZZZ label me. I can't wait to be labeled: "Thin", "Healthy", "Active" and all the other good stuff that comes from getting this weight off -- by any means necessary. I happen to be one of those people that doesn't take much stock in the negative opinions of others. The people outside of the bandster world that think WLS is for ... hmmmm ... "losers" well, I really could care less. My life, my choices, my happiness, my health. If others have time to label me, perhaps they need to "get a life". But, in the meantime, if I give them something to do with their small minds, so be it. Trust me, I won't be giving them a thought.

I think that you will be less "weirded out" by it as time goes by -- you'll be too busy shopping for new clothes in smaller sizes, like I am. :D

All the best to you on your journey.

Proudly "Banded" Fran

Here, Here ! I agree.

I am banded and proud of it. Have a Disability and get labeled, that's a whole different story.

This is for safety, so that if you become unconscious, they won't shove a tube down your airway.

I'm sure you wouldn't want to deal with that.

I know I wouldn't.

I am so thankful for this site...I am 6 days out like two of you and really freaking out. i know its the right thing but i can't shake this nervousness. I had my final consult with my surgeon yesterday and I was almost shaking sitting there. I have worked really hard to get here and know it will change my life but I'm terrified.

I love that there are so many nurses on here. I am a 1st year nursing student starting the class the day before surgery LOL

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
