What are good protein shakes?

Recommended Posts

I have begun my 10 liquid diet before surgery, and I am curious what are good Protein Drinks. I have tried Atkins. They are ok. I have never really drank Protein drinks/shakes, so I am not sure what all is out there. I do know that it has to be low sugar. Thank you in advance

The one I drink does not seem to be very well known but you can find them in GNC and The Vitamin Shoppe. It is called EAS Myoplex and I love it, for both flavor and lack of major aftertaste :) Good luck finding the right one for you!

Seems like everyone has a different favorite. My fave is this one:http://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Nutrition-Standard-Double-Chocolate/dp/B000QSNYGI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311262781&sr=8-1

24 g Protein (more when made with milk)

3g carbs

n funky after taste, blends well with a blender, no grittiness

I like the Unjury brand. You can only get it online. But you have to try ones for yourself, everyone has a different taste. Plenty of people swear by one brand and it might taste horrible to you.

I like the GNC lean shake. With vanilla, you can add anything and make it whatever flavor you want.B)

I posted this a few days ago on here.. some agree, some don't... Hope it helps.

Hello, I decided to post this because of the importance of us bandsters getting in higher amounts of nutrition and Protein in our diets, especially during the full liquid phase. So many of us blindly go to the grocery store (as I did at first) and pick out any Protein shake that we feel will just taste good, not knowing that most of them out there are so bad for us and do not really do our bodies justice.

The point of this surgery is to get healthier, not sicker...

So here is a PHENOM link about Protein powders from one of my most favorite health & nutrition gurus out there. His name is Dr. Mercola, he is an alternative doc and he actually has an office in Schaumburg, IL near where I live!

I like the Syntrax Nectar brand. They have a lot of good ones, such as Fuzzy Navel, Lemonade, Ice-Tea, chocolate Truffle to name a few. You can get them at their website or at Amazon.com.< /span>

An inexpensive on that tastes good is Body Fortress Super whey Protein, which can be gotten from Walmart, at 14.00 for a 2lb container. They make a chocolate and Peanut Butter flavor that is good. One scoop has 26 grams of protein.

I also use Unjury, Chocolate Spendor, it tastes good as well. And finally, 4 Ever Fit makes some really nice fruit flavored ones that you can make great smoothies out of. They have a website as well. They also offer a sample pack.

Do a search (here at lapbandtalk) for the thread "samples, samples, samples" and someone was nice enough to compile a list of all the places you can get samples from. I did it and I got a bunch of stuff in the mail in a few days. Some were free, some were for the cost of shipping and handling and some were a nominal amount for a few samples. It was definitely worth it as now I know what I like and who makes what.

Good luck to you.

I use Slim Fast Low Carb I actually don't start my liquid diet for 4 weeks, but I have been introducing them into my diet twice a week and I find them to be very filling. The one thing that I have found from these drinks is that they have a lot of fillers in them and they can be hard on your bowels.

A sweet, satisfying shake with fewer carbs you can enjoy as a meal in your Slim•Fast® 3•2•1 Plan. All of our shakes provide about one-third of your recommended intake for most essential Vitamins and minerals.

Just keep in mind that your surgeon might not want you using them all the time. I bought a bunch of the stuff only to find out that my surgeon wants me eating my calories, not drinking them. Oh well.

Hello...great information....wanted to do a search for the thread you sugested "samples, samples, samples" but I couldn't find the search bar here on the lap band site. If you can, will you give me more information so that I can find it please :-* I fear the Protein shakes and would like to find one I really like. Thank you...

The EAS ones I have tried are good. I also got some Jillian Michaels Protein Powder mix at Walmart and it's quite tasty. I got the vanilla so that I could flavor it many ways. I love adding a few marachino cherries with some juice and coconut or almond flavoring, and ice in a blender. so yummy like a milkshake.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
