OMG!!! I AM LOSING MY HAIR!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I was banded March 24th. Loving my banded life, by the way. I am weighing in at 209, this morning, from 243. I do not even miss the foods that I gave up for my new life.

I do however miss my hair.

I have always had VERY thick hair, so no one really notices but me. But I have lost approximately 5 strands to every one that I have left on my head.

Now, I do not keep track of my Protein. Except by memory. I have an app. on my phone, but with school being out, it is hard to do anything other than run from the little monkies that are chasing me thru the house.

Is the lack of Protein intake the reason I am losing my hair?

Help!!! I am too young to go bald. Especially after I pick at my hubby.

Me too! I was banded April 5th and have been loosing hair like crazy. Luckily, I too have enough hair for 5 people but still.......I also log all Protein so I have been hitting my goal there! Maybe it is just the stress of being newly banded. I hope someone comes along and tells us some supplements to take!

Hi There,

This was a VERY helpful article posted by another Bandster on here yesterday. It started happening to me 2 weeks ago and I am 3 months post op.

<a href="http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker"><img border="0" src="http://tickers.myfitnesspal.com/ticker/show/909/6236/9096236.png" /></a><p style="text-align:center;width:420px;"><small>Created by MyFitnessPal - <a href="http://www.myfitnesspal.com">Free Calorie Counter</a></small></p>

See this article for a full explanation...

Everyone experiences hair loss on a daily basis. Normal Hair loss is barely noticeable, amounting to less than 100 hairs per day. However, the stress of a major surgery can cause hair loss to accelerate up to three times as much in both men and women. It's the body's way of reacting to the trauma of the operation.

  • The Facts
    • During a normal Hair growth cycle, hair grows, then enters into a resting or "telogen" period and eventually sheds. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, "telogen effluvium" is a term used to describe hair that has been rushed into the resting state after the body suffers a shock due to major surgery. As resources are redirected to help heal the affected surgical area, the body temporarily shuts down hair production because it is not necessary for survival.

Identification

  • Telogen effluvium related to surgery can be distinguished from other forms of hair loss in several ways. Individuals typically begin to notice the increasing hair loss two to three months after the surgery. Hair loss after surgery is uniform, noticeable on the scalp but never excessive enough to cause a patchy appearance or complete baldness. In addition, the shed hairs all exhibit a specific pattern at the root, which resembles a white bulb.

Time Frame

  • Hair usually resides in the telogen phase for a period of two to four months before growth resumes. Individuals don't begin to notice the increase in hair loss when showering or brushing the hair until about three months post-surgery. Although the resting hair is being pushed out of the scalp by new hair that is already growing, it can take anywhere from about six months to a year for the hair to return to its normal fullness.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

  • Individuals who have undergone gastric bypass or other operations of the digestive tract designed to reduce obesity are more prone to hair loss post-surgery. This is due to the reduced intake of food in the weeks and months immediately following these procedures. The body needs an adequate amount of Proteins and Vitamins to maintain hair production. Protein-enhanced shakes are often recommended for these patients as a substitute until solid food can be better tolerated.

Proper Diet

  • Hair loss related to surgery typically reverses itself without any medicinal intervention or the need for over-the-counter hair loss tonics or treatments. However, maintaining a diet rich in Protein and Iron is believed to help promote and speed up healthy hair growth. Suggested foods include salmon, Beans, eggs, spinach, broccoli, nuts and whole-grain cereals. Avoid foods that can inhibit hair growth, such as those that contain high levels of caffeine and fat.

Also, there is an amazing supplement called Genesis by Concious Planet. I am looking into details on how to order it again (its been a year or two since I needed it) for fellow Bandsters. It is a PHENOMINAL clear liquid mineral that you just add a capfull every day to your Water or juice (you don't even taste it) and completely balances you out so that your hair and nails grow amazingly!!! I stopped buying it during some financial struggles because it can be a little pricey, but at this point it's sooo worth it!!! I am buying it ASAP!

Watch for a post by me in the near future called GENESIS SUPPLEMENT for hair loss!

Mine and my banded friend's started falling out about three moths after we got our bands, lasted about 2 or 3 months and then started to come back. My friend had her gallbladder out about a year later and the exact same thing happened...dont worry about it.

I didnt actually lose hair but the condition of it a year after surgery was sooooo bad! I had a long, layered sort of cut and the ends got really really thin and ratty and my hair got really frizzy (it is kinda half curly and course anyway, so frizz is always a problem). What was happening was that the hair wasnt falling out, it was breaking off so the ends got thin but I had as much as ever at the scalp. I had to give in and cut it off because it looked awful. I've never gone back to longer hair either, I actually prefer it shorter, but would never have been brave enough to do it.

Protein yes, but also Iron and B Vitamins - Hair loss is rarely due to just Protein lacking in the diet. Its more often a general lack of nutrition, hormonal, the shock to the system etc.

Thanks for the article. And I will try the Biotin. Lords knows I have been thru hormonal junk lately. Having a hysterectomy next Thursday.

I have always had great hair. When I fix it. Do not want to start wearing extensions any time soon.

I also lost a lot of my hair to where I could see my scalp. It finally seems to be tapering off.

OMG... when you say losing hair... do you mean like handfuls? I know we lose approximately 100 hairs a day naturally and having long hair to my waist... It's more visible to me to see the hairs that naturally drop off... I'd probably have a heart attack if I grabbed a handful out :(

Long hair became my security blanket when I gained weight...I'd be sad if I had to chop it...

I am losing my hair by the handfuls. I feel like I have lost about a 3rd of my hair. I have heard it will come back.

After a couple months I started to loose hair. Started to take Biotin 5,000 mg and after a month or so it stopped. Not sure if my body was done losing hair or if the Biotin helped.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
