Obese all my life. as I grew older and body changes came along. I wanted to do something for myself to allow myself to become healthier and perhaps be able to enjoy my retirement. My knees where bothering me and no matter what type of dieting I tried there was always the failure to maintain the new weight loss. I did research on bariatric surgery, looked at the morbidity rates, interviewed people who had bariatric surgery and did my due diligence on bariatric surgeons. The more I learned, the more comfortable I was with my decisions. I then approached my husband for a discussion. His only concern was that I was doing this surgery for myself and not for him. He felt that I was perfect the way that I was, but also understood my reasonings for wanting to have the Lap Band. He then jumped in with both feet did his research and then became my partner in this journey from taking time out to go to every meeting/physician appointment to staying with me after surgery, and being my motivational coach. We started what I labeled this phase as "my journey" in January of 2010. By March 2010 everything was approved I had my date for surgery and went through the pre-surgery classes and pre-operative testing. Dr. Korman told me that my blood calcium levels were too high and that I would need to see my Primary Care Physician to explore this abnormality. The very next day I met with my Primary care physician who performed additional lab tests. The results were the same and I was then told that I could not have the surgery until the Calcium levels had been taken care of and that I would need to be seen by an Endocronoligist."My journey" became my adventure. After a pity party for myself and a battery of tests it became clear that I was indeed more ill than I had known myself to be and that I would need to have my parathyroid (at least one of them) removed. In May of 2010, I had my parathyroidectomy and started the recovery road from that particular disease state. All the while, my goal was to get back to the lap band path.August 2010 my surgeon released me to have the lap band surgery. I was excited! I started with a call to my insurance company everything was still the same as far as coverage and eligibility. I then contacted the LABariatric Group and started to regroup with them and within a week I had a surgery date.So here I am 4 days post op. Starting my adventure in becoming an almost new me!
