May 2011 Bandsters Report In

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I was banded 5/31/11. I have lost 25 pounds since my pre-op/surgery. I have stalled out since I started eating the mushy food last week. Next tuesday I can start eating non mushy/regular food. But so far so good. Almost all of my wounds have healed except for my port wound. There is still a little scab left and then I will be able to work on lathering the Bio Oil to lighten the scars. (Bio Oil was recommended by my best friend who was banded 1 1/2 years ago).

July 14, 2011 is my first fill and follow up appt. I am ready because I can tell I am eating more. I can tolerate more food and I am not getting as full as I was a few weeks ago.

I cant wait to start swimming this summer and going to dance class...........:D

xoxo

Melissa

Hello Everyone

I just found this forum and I'm excited about it. It is good to find individuals who was banded the same month that I was banded and to see their results. I like to know if I'm on track or if there are changes that I need to make towards my healthier lifestyle. I was banded on May 11, 2011. I had a revision of my ports in August. The port kept flipping when my surgeon tried to fill. In surgery, I received a 2 cc fill. That was my first fill. I don't know if the ports flipping is something that I have done. My surgeon did let me know while I was in surgery that the ports were good. I don't if I was nervous about my first fill or what. She is very pleased about my weight loss.

To date, I have lost 32.6 pounds. At times, I feel satisfied but then other times I don't. I don't think I have met my happy medium. Hopefully, I will get another fill at my next appointment on the 12th of September. Exercise has never been an advantage for me. I have been trying to exercise more. To date, I have been walking 4.5 miles a day 3 times a week. My short term goal is to increase to 4 times a week. I did have a membership at the gym. For some odd reason, I don't seem to walk as much when I'm on the treadmill. I don't know if it is due to walking in one place and the scenery bores me. We have a park in my area and I walk that trail and I walk more and at a faster pace. I have to decide how I will get my exercise in during the winter months? Any suggestions would be great. I was thinking about rejoining the gym in the winter but I'm afraid that my length of exercise will decrease which I don't want to happen. I can remember when I could only walk a mile twice a week.

Anywoo, I guess that I have carried on long enough but I just wanted to share my progress with the bandster in May.

I don't mind looking in the mirror, as much.People notice. My rings are too big.My lanyard hangs all the way to my belly button. My ankle has less and less pain everyday. My PCOS has resolved. The seatbelt in my car doesn't cut my neck.I have become an inspiration to others!

jlaroux I am noticing the very same thing! Plus tons more energy! I am over half way to my goal and it feels amazing! It also feels awesome to get rid of those fat clothes forever! I love being able to say "yep I cant wear that one anymore"! Chassy ~ I have had those hickups a few times mostly when I eat too fast! I still think I need my band a little tighter as I can eat much more than I should as this point I just chose not to!

Hi Everyone!~

I've had two fills (my doc left but he comes back once a month).. Each fill leaves me barely able to swallow Water for the first 10 days and I quickly lose weight those days... but then Im loose enough to eat again which sucks. The first fill was 3cc and .5 cc had to be removed because I couldn't swallow water at all.. it just sat there. Second fill was just 1cc. My next doc visit is middle of Oct and I'll prob get another 1cc. I can only handle that much at a time I suppose. As for weight loss, it's been AMAZING! I only have 30 pounds to go until I reach my goal, although I plan to go another 10 pounds past that. When I set my goal I really never thought I would reach it. I'm sitting at 180 now and I remember telling myself that I would be totally happy to make it to 175.. Well, I'm nearly there.

Seeing the inches fall off has been the biggest motivation of all. I was able to bag up every single item hanging in my closet and give it all away. My smallest winter top could fit two of me in it. I probably should have kept a pair of pants or something now that I think of it for picture purposes but I didn't ever want to look at it again. I can wear medium sized tops for the first time in my life and it just feels amazing. I lost a LOT of weight in my legs and it's all skin and bone there. NO fat at all (which I now feel that it's gotten colder).

I'm quite happy! As for foods: I still do a Protein Shake or a Protein Bar in the morning.. a Protein bar or tuna salad for lunch and some type of protein and veggie for dinner. If I snack at all it will be string cheese or other type of cheese or cheese/meat product or yogurt and fruit. I can not do bread at all. It gets stuck in a second and I HATE that feeling. I have yet to PB and I don't ever want to. I still haven't vomited and again don't want to go there either. But getting stuck is a painful nightmare for me.

I finally hit onederland and updated my ticker ;)

Down to a sz 12-14 jeans, still in an xl t-shirt though... The girls refuse to shrink a little lol and I can't handle tight clothes.

Any of you wear Spanx? I can't do it... I feel like a slug in a straw plus the tightness makes me feel sick.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
