March 2011 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Well I am offically banded as of 12pm yesterday!!! I thought I was going to die from the pain at first only because no one told me to breathe when I try to move or get up! but once I was informed to breathe things are much better! I came home yesterday afternoon around 3:30 i was very tired so I slept for a few hours off and on. I was able to get up and walk around a good bit last night which I was impressed with because the way I felt at the hospital I thought I was going to be hurting for a while. I havent had horrible gas pains just a little in my chest and my left shoulder and that was mostly last night. My pain is only on my left side where my port is and it really only hurts when I get up. I am very glad I have done this! I cant wait to start seeing results! I am not hungry at all but I am getting liquids down with no problem. Trying to remember to take and do everything I need to. I weighed myself just to see if I had gained like most people said they had from the swelling and fluids on their bodies but to my suprise I havent!! But i am not swollen either so that might have alot to do with it too! the only thing that is swollen is my hand from my IV, and thats because the nurse gave me a new bag but my other was empty and OMG that hurt so bad! to the point that my hand hurt all night long! I have had many IVs inmy life and never have experienced that! But over all the hopspital and nurses were awesome and the entire thing went well! I wish everyone luck! it is the best thing we can do for ourselves!!!

Hi,

So im around 13hrs out from my surgery and it went perfect. i havent really been to sore the nurses gave me some antibiotics and pain meds and i slept most of yesturday till about 4pm when my parents came and visited me. It was funny when i fist woke up after the surgery the nurses were talking away to me but all i could think was hurry up cos i cant keep my eyes open lol.

Anyway last night around 7pm i think i got a shake, some Soup and some juice for dinner but i didnt eat the Soup it was to rich so i drank the smoothie ands just sipped away on the juice.< /p>

Its hard to tell what im feeling, my stomach is kinda tight so i cant quite tell when im hungry or not.

I stayed in hospital last night (it was private) it was like staying in a hotel. I got a newspaper and a warm face cloth when i woke up (i got up around 6-7am)this morning and around 45min later i got a smoothie and tea for Breakfast. I wasnt able to move around much last night because i was hooked up to these leg stockings that inflate on each leg one at a time so i needed a nurse to unattach me from them whenever i needed to go to the bathroom.

Im at home now (its 12:30pm) and i feel ok my follow up app is in one week and i take my dressings off in five days to let the incisions air a bit. everythings looking good so far and i hope it continues to.

Good luck to everyone else who is being banded soon, i dont regret it, im looking forward to starting my new life.

SO TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!!! I had my last preop on monday with my own physician to give me final clearance, do my blood, ekg...etc. I had already lost 15 pounds on being on my liquid diet for the 1st 10 days...so who knows how much it will be when I arrive at 6am. I started the madatory potassium pills yesterday, which really hurt my stomach, since I took them on an empty one. I left work early today to do my magnesium citrate....be near a bathroom when you take yours or you could have some issues. The hospital just called and told me what my balance will be for the hospital stay ($1825=20% of negotiated rate), and asked me to pay prior to surgery...I said I don't think so...so I just gave them a portion. Can't wait to see what my bill from the doctors will be, even so, I will just pay 20% as insurance pays the other 80%. Not too nervous....may pop in a xanax or two or 3 ;) . Waiting for the wife to come home with some broth from the deli...good luck to my fellow peeps tomorrow. I will keep everyone posted.

Congrats to those newly banded and good luck to those going in soon!

I had my week post op appt today...incisions are healing well. Doc says I'm well on track. according to their scales I'm down 3 pounds in the past week and 16 total (includes preop diet)...so I'm happy. Of course I didn't tell the doctor that I've been doing softs since 2 days post op (shame on me) and am on more solids now. I was really bust at lunch loading things into a delivery truck (my little side job, auction hunting and reselling) so ate some food my brother bought a little too fast and almost threw up. I have to remmeber to not do that darnit. I didn;t eat a lot, but too much too fast I think. anyway my first fill will be on april 13th. Yay!!! Oh and I tried to eat alight soft taco from taco Time today...a big no go. I ended up eating some of the lettuce & chicken inside and tossing the tortilla etc. The really cool thing about the experience is that I used to LOVE fast food...and this just didn't really taste good, especially compared to the foods I've been preparing for myself at home. A big smack in the face of "I can do this.":D and I was so glad I opted to eat only part, and toss most of it.

It's going to be a stressful day. My 7 yo cracked a molar and because it's a half day at school it means keeping my 6 yo home too so we can get to the dentist appt. They have new "marshmallow guns" and there's mini marshmallows flying thru the air all over the house, and lots of yelling and bickering. Now they're all excited cause one landed in mommy's underwear in the laundry pile. I have 2 parent teacher conferences this afternoon (and my kindergartner is having problems) and then I get ready for working all night and I only slept 5 hours last night, so no nap. I'll have to really watch for stress eating.

Awinner, thinking of you today!!!! :D

Day 3 post op... and i feel so much better! Last night was a little rough, my left side has been hurting the most and then to top it off I had gas trapped on the left side too! O that was not fun! I walked for about 30 minutes up and down my hallway and took a pain pill and went to sleep. I can say today I feel much better the pain is much better! I am still sore on the left side but other than that I feel great! My tummy is going crazy, I guess the gas is moving around and trying to escape it kinda feels funny! It makes me giggle! My dog which is glued to me at all times can here it and makes funny faces at me like what is wrong with you momma? haha... I jumped on the scale today just to see, and to my amazment I have lost 2 lbs since I went in for surgery on Tuesday! That makes me so happy!!! :D Well anyways just wanted to update everyone! and say good luck to all getting banded today! And good luck to Marcy, sounds like your going to have a rough day!

Hey all!!! Hope everyone is doing well. Congrats to those who were banded today!!

Yesterday I had my post op. Surgeon is very pleased with my healing, everything is normal and so far so good. I was supposed to go back to work today but she didn't want to clear me till Monday (I'm not complaining). From their notes I'm down 15 pounds since my pre op but on my scale it's a little more than that. I can't wait to get off this liquid diet, I'm ready for some mushy food (less than a week).

That's it for now!

I'm still sick and I'm not sure even the Drs know for sure what it is, they're saying the Flu/Pneumonia/Bronchitis. Had x-rays on Tuesday and they say a small patch on my lungs, but they're not sure if it's getting better or just starting. Went to the ER after having 102-103 degree fever all night. Havent been getting much sleep with this cough and cold sweats but I did drop 3 lbs last night. I've been trying to keep my liquids and Protein up. Apple, Strawberries, blueberries, spinach, kefer, and vanilla Protein Powder for breakfast, 3-4 chicken livers for lunch (my mom was craving them) and about 6 bites of red Beans and rice for dinner.< /p>

Marcy-instead of worring about eating, keep your Water with you at all times and sip, sip, sip. Best of luck. I know what it is like to work all night after taking care of the family all day. My little guy is home with strep today and tomarrow till the antibiotics are on board for 24 hours.

Our nurse practitioner was telling us the other day if you have pain on a side from gas to actually lay on that side-it makes the gas move and rise toward the center and out. Best of luck.

Goofy weather here in NY, snow today vs spring jacket the other day. But as silly as it sounds, my winter jacket was looser today as well as my zip up boots!!! I guess even the 14 pounds mean something!!:success1:

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
